McClanahan Director, Division of Endodontics Director, Graduate Endodontics Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics Dr. McClanahan received a B.A. in 1974 and D.D.S. in 1981 both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1981, he entered the U.S. Navy as a dental officer. Dr. McClanahan was selected by the Navy for civilian specialty training and completed his certificate of residency in endodontics at Northwestern University Dental School as well as a M.S. from Northwestern University in 1989. After three assignments as a clinical endodontist, Dr. McClanahan joined the faculty of the Endodontics Department at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, Bethesda, MD in 1998 and in 2001, assumed the responsibilities of Chairman of the Endodontics Department and Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics. Dr. McClanahan retired from active duty in September 2005 and joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota, School of Dentistry as an Associate Professor in November of 2005. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. Dr. McClanahan is a standing Director of the American Board of Endodontics and the 2015-7 Secretary of the Board.

Faculty Profiles

Scott B. McClanahan Director, Division of Endodontics Director, Graduate Endodontics Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics Dr. McClanahan received a B.A. in 1974 and D.D.S. in 1981 both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Samantha Harris Roach Director, Undergraduate Endodontics Co-Director, Pre-Clinical Endodontics Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics Dr. Samantha Harris Roach received her D.D.S. from the University of Maryland in 2009 and her certificate of residency in endodontics and M.S. degree from the University of Minnesota in 2011. She joined the faculty in October 2011 and maintains a private practice limited to endodontics in the Twin Cities. Dr. Roach is the Director of Undergraduate Endodontics and her teaching responsibilities include both the undergraduate and the graduate endodontics programs.

Dr. Brian Barsness Co-Director, Pre-Clinical Endodontics Endodontics Mentor – Fairview General Practice Residency Program Dr. Barsness grew up in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He attended St. Olaf College, earning a bachelor’s degree in biology. He then earned a master’s degree in microbiology from St. Cloud State University, and spent the next seven years working in pharmaceutical drug development. In 2000, he returned to the University of Minnesota, earning his D.D.S. in 2004. Following the completion of a General Practice Residency program at the Minneapolis, Minnesota VA hospital in 2005, he entered private practice as a general dentist in the Twin Cities. He received his certificate of residency in endodontics and M.S. degree from the University of Minnesota in March 2014 and joined the faculty in May 2014. Dr. Barsness and his wife, also an endodontist, have two children. When their schedules allow, they enjoy traveling to Minnesota’s North shore, fitness activities, and taking care of their two dogs.

Carolina Rodriguez-Figueroa Undergraduate Endodontics Endodontics Mentor – Veteran’s Administration General Practice Residency Program Dr. Carolina Rodriguez-Figueroa was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. In 2002, she received her dental degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela School of Dentistry. In 2003, she was accepted into the Gerondontology Program at the “Universidad Complutense de Madrid”, Spain and upon completion of the program in 2004, worked in private practice in Venezuela. In 2005, Dr. Rodriguez- Figueroa enrolled in the Full Time Endodontic Program at the “Universidad del Salvador & AOA” in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After completing this program in 2006, she returned to Venezuela to get married and soon moved to the US with her husband, Dr. Luis Delima. In June 2009, she joined the Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program at the University of Minnesota that she completed in May 2011. She received her certificate of residency in endodontics and M.S. degree from the University of Minnesota in 2013. Dr. Rodriguez-Figueroa joined the faculty in September 2013. Daughter Nicole was born in April 2015. Her interests include travel, dancing, cooking and spending time with friends and family.

Residents

Rhett Finley Class of 2016 Dr. Finley grew up in Rapid City, SD. After spending a year at Augustana College, he transferred to Baylor University in Waco, TX and completed his B.S. degree in Biology in 2006. Dr. Finley pursued his dental education at the University of Minnesota and earned his D.D.S. degree in 2010. Following dental school, he completed a one year General Practice Residency at the University of Colorado Denver. He then returned the Twin Cities and worked in private practice for 3 years prior to starting his residency in Endodontics. He, his wife Julianne, daughter Lucy and their Australian Shepherd, Beau, reside in Wayzata and love everything the Twin Cities has to offer. He is especially fond of outdoor activities including cycling, golf, and x-country skiing. Following graduation, Dr. Finley hopes to join a practice in the Twin Cities and help instruct the next generation of Endodontists on a part time basis.

Phil McKenzie Class of 2016 Dr. Philip McKenzie is from St. Catharines, Ontario. He earned his hBSc in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Western Ontario. He then earned his D.D.S. in 2012 from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dr. McKenzie began his career with a 1 year hospital based General Practice Residency at the Vancouver General Hospital in association with the University of British Columbia. He gained more experience the following year by splitting his time between a private practice in Squamish, British Columbia and the Oral Oncology department at the Fraser Valley location of the British Columbia Cancer Agency. Dr. McKenzie enjoys skiing, playing hockey, golf, jogging, traveling and movies.

Christopher Saylor Class of 2016

Dr. Saylor was born and raised in Watertown, SD. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls where he earned his biology degree in 2005. Dr. Saylor went on to obtain his D.D.S. from the University of Minnesota in 2009. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Air Force. He completed a one-year AEGD program at the Air Force Academy and has spent the last four years practicing general dentistry at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ. When he is not working he enjoys traveling, cooking, hiking, biking, hunting and spending time with friends and family. Chris and his wife Rachael are very excited to be returning to Minneapolis for residency.

Amber Zedler Class of 2016 Dr. Amber Zedler was born and raised in Huron, SD. She then attended the University of South Dakota, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. She received her D.D.S. degree from the University of Minnesota in 2009. Since graduation, Dr. Zedler has been in private practice in the Twin Cities where she lives with her husband Peter. In their spare time, the Zedlers enjoy flipping houses, traveling, and cheering for the Packers. After graduating, Dr. Zedler plans to work in private practice and hopefully teach part time.

Michael Regan Anderson Class of 2017 Michael W. Regan Anderson was raised in the Seattle area. He graduated in 2009 from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington where he earned a B.A. in religion. After college, he moved to the Twin Cities area and worked with Teach for America for a short time before working for a dental clinic in the Twin Cities. Michael anticipates receiving his D.D.S. from the University of Minnesota in 2015. His interests outside of dentistry include cycling, kayaking, basketball, reading, and spending time with his loving wife, amazing friends, cat and dog. After finishing the endodontics residency, Michael looks forward to a career as a clinician and educator.

Alex Brown Class of 2017 Dr. Alexander Brown was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He attended the University of Alberta, where received his BSc in Physiology in 2006 and D.D.S. in 2011. Dr. Brown worked in a general dentistry practice in Morinville, Alberta for four years following graduation. Dr. Brown and his wife, Tamara, are the proud parents of three young children. In his spare time, he enjoys playing hockey, fly fishing, as well as playing and writing music. Once he has completed his residency, Dr. Brown is excited to return to Edmonton to work in private practice as well as teach part-time.

Kristine Knoll Class of 2017 Dr. Kristine Knoll was born and raised in Dallas, TX. She attended Nova Southeastern University on a soccer scholarship and earned a B.S. in biology in 2008. Dr. Knoll obtained her D.D.S. degree at Baylor College of Dentistry in 2012. Upon graduation, she has spent the last two years working in an private office practicing general dentistry. Dr. Knoll has integrated her passion for dentistry and sports by becoming a certified team dentist and a dental provider for the U.S. Olympic athletes. In her spare time, Dr. Knoll enjoys painting, staying active, and playing with her French Bulldog, Coors. She is very excited to further her education in endodontics at the University of Minnesota.

Tyler Schuurmans Class of 2017 Dr. Schuurmans was born and raised in Madison, SD. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he studied biology and went on to obtain his D.D.S. from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 2009. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Air Force and completed a one-year AEGD program at Offutt Air Force Base, NE. Dr. Schuurmans then spent four years living and practicing dentistry on the small island of Okinawa, Japan while stationed at Kadena Air Force Base. He completed his active service at Kirtland Air Force Base, NM. In his spare time, Dr. Schuurmans is an avid photographer, enjoys music, cycling, scuba diving and traveling with his wife and son. He is excited to move back to the Midwest and looks forward to a career involving a mix of private practice and education.

Russel Bienias Class of 2018 Dr. Bienias was born and raised all over the United States and Germany as an Air Force dependent. He attended the University of North Carolina-Wilmington as a NCAA Division I soccer student-athlete where he earned a B.A. in Chemistry with a Minor in Mathematics in 2007. He went on to obtain his D.M.D. from the University of Florida College of Dentistry in 2011. After graduation, he continued the family tradition and was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Air Force. He completed an AEGD-1 residency program at Eglin AFB, FL and has been at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ for the past four years practicing as a general dentist. Just before entering dental school, he was blessed to have met his Midwest wife from Rochester, MN and now have two beautiful girls and a dog. In his free time, he loves traveling, playing soccer, watching college athletics, and spending quality time with his young, fun, and energetic family. He and his family are excited to spend the next chapter in their life near family and friends in Minnesota.

Katie Divine Class of 2018 Dr. Katie Divine lived in several states while growing up including California, Minnesota, South Dakota, New Mexico and for the most part, Oregon. She earned her B.S. in Biology from Arizona State University in 2009. She then received her D.D.S. in 2013 from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Divine completed one year of additional training through an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency in Boise, Idaho. In 2014, she moved back to the Twin Cities and worked in private practice as a general dentist for two years prior to starting her residency in Endodontics. Dr. Divine plans to enter private practice as an endodontist and stay involved in organized dentistry through local dental community and teaching. During her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband (a general dentist), traveling, reading and baking.

Katie Kickertz Class of 2018 Dr. Katie Kickertz was born in Indianapolis, IN, grew up in Rockford, IL and calls Chicago home. She obtained her B.S. from Purdue University. Dr. Kickertz went on to Indiana University for her D.D.S. and graduated in 2012. After graduating from dental school, she worked in private practice focusing on general dentistry in the Chicago area. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Kickertz volunteers as a judge for U.S. Figure Skating. She was a competitive figure skater in her youth and is a double gold medalist. She also enjoys travelling and lists climbing Machu Picchu in Peru, wine tasting in Italy and going on safari in South Africa as some of her favorite travel experiences. Dr. Kickertz is thrilled to be continuing her endodontics education at the University of Minnesota.

Brandon Penaz Class of 2018 Dr. Penaz was born and raised in Waconia, MN. He received a B.A. in natural sciences from Saint John’s University and went on to obtain his D.D.S. from the University of Minnesota in 2012. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and completed an AEGD program at Naval Station Great Lakes in Chicago, IL. He spent the next three years practicing general dentistry at MCAS Cherry Point in Havelock, NC and completed a shipboard deployment as the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit Dental Officer aboard the USS Iwo Jima. In his spare time, he enjoys flying, motorcycling, and automotive restoration. Dr. Penaz and his wife Rachel are looking forward to settling down in their home in St. Paul and continuing their dental careers in the Twin Cities area.
