Hello Division 38!
Depending on your school district, summer break might literally be just around the corner. In fact, some of you seniors are already out of school and maybe have already even had your graduation. No matter what your situation is, this newsletter is dedicated to all of our graduating seniors. I’d like to extend a warm congratulations to each and every single senior for all the hard work and dedication you have put into your home club. I know that all of you will do great things in your future, whether that’s attending a university or staying around town. Remember that just because your time is up in high school does not mean that your time is up in service to our community. If you’re planning to attend a university, make sure to join a Circle K club. If you’re going to stay around town, Kiwanis Clubs around the region are looking for new and young prospective members. For more information on both choices, see page 4 for a letter from our PNW Kiwanis Governor, Greg Holland. (Hidden phrase: good luck seniors!)
To everyone else, hang in there because in due time, you will get your chance to walk across stage and get that coveted graduation certificate. But in the meanwhile, make each of your high school days in Key Club count. Just because school is over soon, does not mean Key Club is over. Spend your days off relaxing but also changing your community!

Tacoma Rally
New location!
This meeting is mandatory for everyone attending Tacoma Rally. Along with having our regular monthly DCM, we will also be discussing spirit
gear and finalize carpools for Tacoma Rally. Since OHS Key Club will be hosting this month’s DCM, there will be food!
To all Key Club Seniors, Congratulations on your graduation. On behalf of the Kiwanis organization I would like to thank you for the dedication and service you have put in with your Key Club. Before you leave the Kiwanis organization, I would like you to consider one question: Is your time in Key Club going to be your only step in community service or will it
be your first step in community service?
We are hoping that it will be your first step and depending upon what your immediate plans are, we have options available for you to continue that service.
1. University or College – we have CKI clubs at many of these institutes that will offer you the opportunity to continue your service experience. CKI is the university level equivalent to your Key Club. If there is not a CKI present at your university, than contact us and together we can set one up.
2. Kiwanis clubs are present in your home community if you are not planning further education or going to live at home while doing so. Two options:
a. The Traditional Kiwanis club that sponsors your Key Club is one option available to you. This will allow you the opportunity to network and take advantage of their experience in your community.
b. The Next Generation Kiwanis Club is a new concept we have created especially for you and they are being built around Key Clubs to provide you with an
opportunity to continue your service with your own age group. This style club will have a focus on service; will offer you flexibility; and is designed to be a low cost club. It is an adult club, with no advisors. The structure and traditions will be designed by yourselves to match your life styles.
The cost of membership has always been an issue with young adults starting out. All members of the Key Club organization are entitled to two (2) years free dues when you join
Kiwanis. I hope these incentives will encourage you to take the next step to continuing your service in the Kiwanis organization. Contact me or your advisor if you are interested, we will build a club in your area. Greg Holland PNW Governor 2012 – 2013 [email protected]
A Letter to all Graduating Seniors
What is Key Leader?
Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today's young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of
leadership—it comes from helping others succeed.
Participants begin by attending a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group workshops, discussions and team-building activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better. While exploring leadership in a whole new way, participants will make amazing new friends and have experiences they will never forget. Positive, ongoing interaction with other Key Leader graduates offers continuing reinforcement, encouragement and growth of leadership skills.

What is the ELIMINATE Project?
The Eliminate Project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally terminate
MNT.
What is MNT?
MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.
Who suffers from MNT?
In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating– tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.

Who: Anyone with a thirst for service and Key Club. Including Key Clubbers, Advisors, Kiwanians, and prospective members from the entire Pacific Northwest District!
What: A “mini-DCON” including an opening session, exciting workshops, and closing session with a talent show.
When: June 27th, 2013 from 8:30-5:00.
Where: Steilacoom High School (54 Sentinel Dr, Steilacoom, WA 98388)
Why: Receive additional officer training from the new executive board, meet Key Clubbers from the PNW district, help the community with an onsite service project, and have fun!

Monthly S.T.A.R. Points
How Do I get S.T.A.R. Points?
S- Send me monthly club dates by filling out the form (bit.ly/Div38ClubUpdate)
T- Text/email me answers to the monthly riddle and/or hidden word/phrase
found in each newsletter
A- Attend DCM’s, Rallies, Committee Meetings, Etc…
R- Respond to emails, newsletters, surveys, and anything else I send out
How many points do I get for each S.T.A.R. Task?
S- 40 points for each monthly update filled out by the president. 10 additional
points for emailing me pictures of your “club in action”.
T- 5 points per person (officer or member) for each riddle guess (doesn’t matter
whether it’s right or wrong). Additional 5 points for finding the hidden
word/phrase. Email/text your answers to me.
A- 5 points for each officer (3 points for each member) that attends a DCM,
rally, Committee meeting, etc…
R- 5 points per person that responds to my emails, newsletters, surveys, and
anything else I send out. (10 points to the first person that responds)
*Look out for Monthly Bonus Points*
Bonus Points for the Month of June- Receive 5 points for every new member that joins the “PNW
Key Club Division 38” Facebook page.
What’s in it for my club?
Each month, the club with the most points from the previous month will be
awarded a certificate and a “star trophy”. The club with the most “star trophies”
at the end of the Key Club year will get to sit at the front of our division at DCON.
Earn 5 points by answering this month’s riddle
Instead of giving a riddle this month, I want you all to send me your best riddle along with the
answer. The best one will be chosen and featured in July’s newsletter.

This Month’s S.T.A.R. Award Goes To…
Timberline High School
Did you club not win this month? Don’t give
up! At the beginning of each month, the
points are reset to zero and everyone once
again has an equal opportunity to win an
award. Remember, the club with the most
number of awards (see left) by DCON 2014 will
have first choice of seats within our division.
Keep working hard and who knows, next
month’s S.T.A.R. award might just be yours!
Congratulations to Timberline High School for winning May’s S.T.A.R. Award. This last past month, their club participated in the Post Officer Food Drive to help the Olympia Post Office sort their collected food items. Also, just this last Friday, their club also helped at the Hershey Track Meet held at Olympia High School.
Overall, the officers have kept in good communication with the Lieutenant Governor. Also the secretary report was filed accurately and on time. Keep up the fantastic work!

In addition to the monthly S.T.A.R. Award, the following clubs also stood out from the rest!

Congratulations to all the seniors that received scholarships from their sponsoring Kiwanis Clubs. The Olympia Kiwanis Club gave scholarships out to: Angela Lin (CHS), Kiri Nibler (CHS), Ga-young Shin (CHS), Ye-Rin Yi (CHS), Linsie Michales (OHS), Blake Kanz (OHS), and Erika Francks (OHS). The North Thurston Kiwanis Club was also proud to award Katie Stringfellow (THS) with a scholarship. Did a senior from your club also receive a scholarship from a Kiwanis Club? Email me their name along with a picture and they will be featured in July’s newsletter!

Ice-breaker: The Name Game
Tacoma Rally:
-“Mini DCON”
-Incoming officers receive training, prospective members learn
about Key Club, and everyone comes together to work on one
influential service project
-Sign up by May 1st
-Everyone is welcome… including incoming freshmen
- Theme: Service of the Fittest -Ask Circle K and Kiwanis leaders to chaperone
Awards:
-Passed out packets to every member
-Packet includes reports to be filled out by club positions (secretary,
president, etc.) and individual award forms
-Outstanding club awards for positions and awards for members
who do not hold a position
-You need to start when school starts to begin to fill out forms for
awards, not two or three weeks before they are due
Membership:
-How to obtain and acquire new members

-Go to middle-schools that feed into your school
-End last meeting at a high note (food or games)

At Relay For Life events, communities across the globe come
together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and
fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The
funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer –
just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will
celebrate another birthday this year!
Relay teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running
around a track or path at a local high school, park, or fairground.
Relay events are up to 24 hours in length and, because cancer never
sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the
track at all times.
This year’s Thurston County Relay For Life will be on June 21st
starting at 6:00 pm at Timberline High School. Division 38 has been
welcomed to join OHS Key Club’s team, OHS Students for Coach
McDougall. To join, click here. For more information, contact Mariah
Fore at [email protected] We will be discussing walking shifts
at June’s DCM. This event is open to everyone so share it with your
clubs!
Summer Service Project Ideas
Kiwanis Garden
With three different locations throughout Thurston County, all the food grown at the Kiwanis Garden is
donated to the Thurston County Food Bank. Help weed and maintain the Kiwanis Gardens over the summer.

Park Clean Up
During the summer, parks are consistently used for parties and get-
togethers. Therefore they can get polluted with trash and other debris
very easily. Gather your club and clean up a local park.
Rest Area
Many rest areas give out free cookies and drinks to travelers stopping by. Volunteer to help out at a local rest
area by either making them cookies or manning a rest area station.
