TEAM PROFILESBERMUDA After becoming an Associate Member of the ICC in 1966, the Bermuda national team has competed in a host of international competitions including the inaugural ICC WCL Division 1 in 2007 and the biggest one-day event of them all, the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2007.

After being relegated from Division 2 in April 2011, Bermuda hosted the last WCL Division 3 event in April 2013. Bermuda was in the reckoning for a place in the top two early in the competition, registering wins over Oman, Italy and USA, but eventually finished fourth to retain its spot for the 2014 edition of the tournament.

The only two matches Bermuda lost were to the eventual top two teams, second-placed Uganda and winner Nepal. Bermuda’s veteran batsman Lionel Cann was one of only two centurions in the tournament, alongside USA’s Steven Taylor, scoring a 48-ball 113 to set up a 60-run win against Italy.

Later in 2013, the side also featured in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2013. After registering wins over much fancied Scotland and Denmark, Bermuda lost steam and eventually finished 14th.

MALAYSIA NEPALNepal is continuing its climb up the WCL ladder, having won Division 5 on home soil in 2010. The side finished third in Division 4 a few months later to narrowly miss out on promotion, and reappeared in Division 4 in September 2012, where it defeated USA in the final to end the tournament unbeaten.

Nepal went on to win Division 3 in April 2013 after winning its last four matches, which earned the side qualification to the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier New Zealand 2014. Nepal finished ninth in that tournament, beating Uganda in the ninth-place play-off.

In 2014, Nepal appeared in the ACC Premier League, where it finished third on Net Run Rate on the final day of play. The side won three of its matches against Hong Kong, the UAE and fellow Division 3 team Malaysia. Sompal Kami was declared Bowler of the Tournament for his 15 wickets, including a haul of 5-47.

However, the moment to savour for Nepal was qualifying for the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014, thereby also gaining Twenty20 International status. Nepal went on to beat Afghanistan and Hong Kong in front of the broadcast cameras in Bangladesh at the ICC World Twenty20.

Before June 2014, Malaysia’s best performance at a WCL tournament was when it finished runner-up at both Division 6 in September 2011 and Division 5 in February 2012 to book its berth at Division 4 in September 2012.

However, the side won only one of its four matches and was relegated to Division 5. Malaysia hosted the event in March 2014 and finished runner-up to Jersey, losing just one match in the tournament, and that too to Jersey. Malaysia’s runner-up position helped it qualify to Division 4 in Singapore three months later.

Malaysia lost just one match in the league stage, to regional rival Singapore. Both sides qualified to play the final, where Malaysia turned the tables to register a 57-run win, as Singapore fell short in the chase. Player of the final Khizar Hayat’s late blitz, worth 63 runs off 48 balls, did the trick for Malaysia, leading to Malaysia’s first-ever victory at a WCL Division tournament.

2014 has been a busy year for the side, which also featured in the newly launched ACC Premier League tournament. As host, Malaysia defeated eventual champion Afghanistan, but lost its other four matches to finish last in the points table.

Division 3, Malaysia 2014

OFFICIAL GUIDE

SINGAPORE UGANDA Singapore won its first WCL title in September 2009, when it claimed top honours at the Division 6 tournament on home soil.

Thereafter it climbed up the divisions, winning the Division 5 tournament it hosted in February 2012, after fending off the challenge of Malaysia.

In September of the same year, Singapore finished third in Division 4, losing only two of its matches, to eventual winner Nepal and USA.

Singapore returned to Division 4 in June 2014, and, as host, suffered a shock 70-run defeat at the hands of Denmark, before regrouping to face Malaysia in the final.

Having beaten Malaysia in the league stage, Singapore’s effort with the bat came undone in the final, and it fell 57 runs short. However, the second-place finish earned the team promotion to Division 3 four months later.

One week prior to Division 4, Singapore emerged champion in the inaugural ACC Elite League tournament. The only loss Singapore suffered at the tournament to Saudi Arabia, and the side finished top on Net Run Rate after recording wins against Maldives, Bahrain, Bhutan and Kuwait.

USAUSA is returning to Division 3 having played the same division in 2011 before being relegated to Division 4 in 2012, where it won promotion back to Division 3 in 2013. In the most recent event, USA finished third on Net Run Rate, having won three of its matches, to retain its spot in Division 3. Steven Taylor and Orlando Baker recorded the two highest partnerships of the tournament, striking 156 against Bermuda and 125 against Nepal, with Taylor the highest run-getter of the tournament (274 runs). Former West Indies left-arm spinner Neil McGarrell was among the top wicket-takers, claiming 12 wickets.

In 2013, the USA won the ICC Americas Division 1 Championship in Florida, and a few months later took on Canada in a one-day match that finished as a no result after Canada scored 252.

Later in the same year, USA featured in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier UAE 2013, where it finished last in its group. USA won one of its seven matches, with another declared a no result. Flamboyant batsman Steven Taylor seventh in the list of top run-getters at the tournament (271 runs from seven innings).

Uganda won the inaugural Division 3 tournament in May 2007 to earn promotion to Division 2 in Namibia a few months later. The side recorded a single victory to return back to Division 3 in January 2009, where it defeated Afghanistan and Hong Kong to finish second and secure promotion back to Division 2, where it managed one win, against Bermuda.

Back in Division 3 in April 2013, Uganda topped the points table in the league stage to book a place at the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier New Zealand 2014. However, it missed out on winning the title, losing to Nepal by five wickets in the final. Skipper Davis Karishani Arinaitwe was named Player of the Tournament after claiming 10 wickets, including 4-20 against Italy.

The side’s good form didn’t continue into the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier New Zealand 2014, where it lost to Nepal in the ninth-place play-off. Abram Mutyagaba was the best performer for the side with the bat (130 runs), while Charles Waiswa was the leading wicket-taker, with 10.

The side is now coached by former South Africa batsman Peter Kirsten, and recently played in the ACA Cup, where it beat a South Africa Invitation XI.

ICC CONTACTS CREDITS

www.pepsiiccworldcricketleague.com

N. SRINIVASANIt is my pleasure to welcome the competing teams, support staff, match officials, media and

fans to Pepsi ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 in Malaysia. This is the fourth time that Malaysia has hosted an ICC global tournament, and we wish the host every success in staging an enjoyable and successful event.

The Pepsi ICC Development Programme – which commenced in 1997 – plays an important role in the growth and improvement of cricket in ICC’s Associate and Affiliate Members (AMs). The Development Programme oversees all qualification structures into ICC’s major events. The WCL is a critical part of this process, providing AMs a pathway to play in the ICC Cricket World Cup since 2007.

In addition, the WCL provides the pathway into the ICC’s four-day, first class competition for AMs, the ICC Intercontinental Cup. Following the recent decision of the ICC Board to “break the glass ceiling” and allow the winner of the ICC Intercontinental Cup the opportunity to qualify to play Test

cricket, the WCL has taken on even greater significance.

Such international event pathways complement the ICC’s ongoing development work that aims to improve all facets of the game in AMs, including facilities, coaching, administration, education and domestic competitions.

WCL Division 3 provides the opportunity for two teams to progress to WCL Division 2, which is the final step in the pathway to the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Championship and the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2015-17. There is much to play for, and I wish the players the best of luck as they compete for both the tournament trophy and the chance to take a step closer to the ICC Cricket World Cup and Test cricket qualification.

I would like to thank the Malaysian Cricket Association for its hard work in staging this event. Thanks also to the media who do such a great job in promoting AM cricket around the world, and also to our global development partner, Pepsi.

May the best team win.
