ISSUE V, SEPTEMBER 2010 5

ICON RECAP Each year, Key Clubbers the world

over converge upon one spot to

celebrate an amazing year of service,

and to welcome in the new one. This is

Key Club’s International Convention,

and, this year, it was held in Memphis,

Tennessee from July 7-10.

On the first night of the

convention, attendees were treated to

a concert by pop-rock band Relient K,

and spent the next three days traveling

between workshops, general sessions,

and caucuses. Workshops covered

everything from various charities a club

can support, to an exploration on “the

meaning of life.” At the general sessions,

New Jersey Key Clubbers showcased

their spirit for service as we picked up 11

Distinguished Lieutenant Governor

Awards, a Distinguished Award for each

District executive, and a best digital

poster award (for J.P. Stevens High

School). Most importantly, we attended

caucuses and the House of Delegates.

At the House of Delegates, the 2010-2011

International Board was elected. The

2010-2011 Key Club International Board

is:

International President:

Xinlei (Tony) Wang, Wisonsin-Upper

Michigan District

International Vice President:

Ikwo Morris, Carribean-Atlantic District

International Trustees:

Nick Cornell, Wisconsin-Upper Michigan

Matt Harper, Missouri-Arkansas

Caleb Lapsley, Alabama

Annie Lewandowski, Pacific-Northwest

Lisa Nicholson, Pacific-Northwest

Robert Peck, Rocky Mountain

David Velasquez, Florida

Ashley Williams, Carolinas

Stephenie Yuan, Cali-Nev-Ha

Nancy Zhang, New York

And finally... the International Trustee to

the New Jersey District:

WILL ROBERTSON, from the Carolinas

District!

The New Jersey District of Key Club International has chosen poverty as our District

Programs focus for the 2010-2011 service year. Each season will have a service theme

to go along with the main focus, poverty. This year’s focus is something which hits close

to home especially in the current economic state of our country.

Fifteen major cities in New Jersey and three counties have reached critical poverty

levels. One out of five New Jersey families does not earn enough to afford basic

necessities such as food and housing, and 85% of these households have at least one

member who is employed. Only 6% of them receive welfare. Over 738,900 people in

NJ live at or below the poverty level and 575,000 children in New Jersey live in low-

income households.

Poverty may seem like an end but it is only a means to an end. There are a few who

have refused to let their state of poverty affect their success. A few people who come

to mind are Oprah Winfrey, who was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage

single mother, Chris Gardner, subject of the movie, “The Pursuit of Happiness,” and

comedian Jim Carrey.

The theme of education for the fall goes right along with our Governor’s Project,

“Operation Educate” and the Major Emphasis Program, “Live to Learn.” In the United

States, unlike other countries around the world, early, primary, and secondary

educations are free. Worsened poverty has been prevented in our country simply by

free education. However, the poverty stricken families in our country cannot afford the

supplies needed for a proper education. How can a child do his or her homework

without paper to write on or pencils to write with, let alone a computer to research

on? How would you be able to take notes when the only thing you can afford to bring

to class is yourself? How can children learn how to read without the books at home to

practice with?

This is where all of us mighty Key Club members come in. During the fall you can:

Collect school supplies and bring them to Fall Rally or hand them out to kids

in need.

Read to young children to show that reading is fun and important.

Tutor students in your school or in other schools.

Hold a book drive and distribute the books to schools/kids.

CLUB OFFICERS OF THE SUMMER

Even during the summer, these two officers have not only stayed on top of their work, but have gone above and beyond their required duties.

JULY: Samantha Wu (Recording Secretary, Par Hills)

Ever since she’s taken office, Samantha has been one of the only officers to get every CMRF in on time. She has made sure to email me whenever she has foreseen a conflict between her busy schedule and a CMRF due date, allowing us to work something out quickly and efficiently. For that, she has been named “Club Officer Of The Month” for the month of July.

AUGUST: Yeshda Kumar (President, Montville)

Summertime is usually synonymous with slacking, especially when it comes to Key Club activity. However, that has not been the case for Montville President Yeshda Kumar. Throughout the summer, she has arranged can shakes, a board meeting, ovarian cancer ribbon tying, and a Rita’s Fundraiser to take place on September 24th. She has gotten the year off to a great start, which is why I would like to name Yeshda Kumar as “Club Officer of The Month” for the month of August.
