SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY) APRIL 19, 2020

From Fr. Matthew’s Desk

Divine Mercy from the Beginning— The history of our devotion to the

Divine Mercy is a fairly recent one: St. Faustina Kowalksa had her visions of Jesus in the 1930s. The devotion found popularity during the postwar period, especially through the work of a young priest Karol Woytiła (later Archbishop of Krakow and then Pope John Paul II). The recognition of this Sunday as “Divine Mercy Sunday” in the Universal Church only came in the year 2000, when Pope John Paul II canonized St. Faustina. The devotion itself is new, but the truth behind it—that God’s mercy is inexhaustible and that Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy—have always been connected to this day.

In the early Church this Sunday had a strong connection to the Neophytes—the newly-baptized members of the Church. During the Easter Octave, they would gather in the Church, dressed in the white robes they received after baptism, to hear the bishop unpack the mysteries of grace they encountered through the Easter Vigil This helped them more deeply understand how those mysteries connected to God’s saving work first for Israel, then all of humanity. On this Sunday after Easter, they would return their white robes to the Cathedral (this Sunday was also called Dominica in albis for this very reason). This was not a sign of rejecting their robes, the symbol of baptism, but rather a sign they had accepted and internalized the gift they had received. Through God’s mercy it had been freely given, and with gratitude they freely accepted it.

But even earlier—on the Sunday after the first Easter, we hear in our Gospel that the Apostles huddled in the Upper Room for a second time. Most had been there on Easter to see the risen Christ, except for Thomas, who now stubbornly claimed he needed to see Christ’s wounds in order to believe for himself. When the Lord appeared in the Upper Room that time, He did not chastise Thomas. Instead He gave Thomas exactly what he needed—to see the wounds in His hands, and to place his finger in the wound in His side. Thomas was no less an Apostle because he struggled to believe. Instead, Jesus pulled him upward by giving him what he needed to fulfill his high calling.

This is what the inexhaustible mercy of God does for those of us who seek it. No sin is too large, too long ago, or too ingrained for Jesus to not want to lift us up from it. His Mercy endures forever—it is up to us to be open to receiving the gift Jesus offers.
