Dear Friends of St. Louise, On this Divine Mercy Sunday, the Second Sunday of Easter, I will continue my series on the Bible. You recall that Pope Francis has asked all of us to place extra focus on the Word of God this year. Today I would like to take a look at the canon of scripture. In the first place, what do we mean by “canon”? The Greek word kanon derived from the Babylonian word qanu (or “reed,” in English), and indicated a kind of measuring stick, used for example in construction. The “construction” of our Bible was a process of discerning which literary works qualified to be considered part of the “canon.” The goal was to remain faithful to God’s revelation. The Hebrew scriptures, or what Christians often call the Old Testament, settled into a canon over a long period. The Jewish people seem to have had these criteria for their canon: they selected the books that served to conserve, to preserve, and to observe their faith. (The Jerome Biblical Commentary, p. 516) Similarly, Christians took a long time before the canon of both the Old and New Testaments was definitively established. It wasn’t until 1546, during the Council of Trent (1545-1563), that the Catholic Church proclaimed 45 books of the Old Testament and 27 books of the New Testament as canonical. Many other councils over the centuries had broached the subject, but the final decision happened just 486 years ago – which is a very short time when you consider our over-2,000 year history! The most basic criterion was whether the Church believed a particular writing to be inspired, that is, that the Church believed the true author of the book to be the Holy Spirit. That judgment was based on Apostolic Tradition: could the human author be traced to one of the apostles, in the case of the New Testament, and did the Church Fathers refer to that book in their writings? Had the book in question been proclaimed consistently for liturgy over the centuries? There are arguments to suggest that there may have been more criteria than these, but these are all we can point to with real certainty. If a holy writing had significantly formed the Church in her worship and theology over time, then that writing seemed to make the cut! The process by which the canon of scripture developed is yet another example of how the Spirit of the Living God takes on human flesh. God used humans to participate actively in Divine revelation to us, to write sacred texts and then decide, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which ones ought to be in what we now call the Bible. I hope that by our praying and reading over the scriptures, everything you and I say and do will be said and done with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Happy Easter Season! Fr. Gary Zender (I still miss you!)

St. Vincent de Paul needs your help! While many of our ministries are on hold or taking shape in a new way, one es-sential ministry that must continue as we navigate our current health situation is the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. We need your help! Most of our regular volunteers in this ministry are more vul-nerable to COVID19 because of age or underlying health conditions. We are

asking that other volunteers step forward so we can continue this essential ministry while protecting our volunteers and SVDP clients.

What we need: We are looking to recruit volunteers under the age of 60, with-out underlying health conditions, to hand off food at the Parish office from 10AM-11:30AM on Tuesday and Thursday morn-ings. SVDP will continue to perform all back-of-house functions including intake over the phone, making up the bags of food with name labels and setting them near the Parish Office door. An SVDP volunteer will be there at all times. If you sign up, you will simply respond when the client arrives and either hand off the bags or help the clients to their cars while practicing social distancing and hand hygiene.

Please sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0f49a8aa2fa2fd0-stvincent.

Divine Mercy Sunday, April 19, 3PM as Nuclear Families of the Church

Join us to celebrate the feast of Divine Mercy. Join from home or take a pause wherever you are. The prayers include the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and praise worship as minor church families (sing praises or psalms how-ever long your schedule permits).

The message of devotion to Jesus as Divine Mercy is based on the writing of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God’s mercy. Even before her death in 1938, the devotion to the Divine Mercy had begun to spread.

The message of mercy is that God loves us—all of us—no mat-ter how great our sins. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy.

It is a message we can call to mind simply by remembering A-B-C:

Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow though ourselves to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive. This trust is even more critical in the face of Covid-19.

Jesus promised St. Faustina that on Divine Mercy Sunday, "The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment." Take advantage of this incredible promise, “Divine Mercy Sunday.” While physically doing these acts may not be possible at this time, let us remember to do Acts of Contrition and Spiritual Communion for now. God knows and understands us more than we do ourselves.

Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Everyone is invited to join in celebrating a novena to the Virgin Mary under her title, "Our Lady of Perpetual Help," for nine Saturdays, beginning May 4."Our Lady of Perpet-ual Help" is the name given to Mary as depicted in a fa-mous, centuries-old icon in the Byzantine style. The icon and the devotion to Mary it inspires is in the special charge of the Redemptorist order of priests. You can see a picture of the icon and read about its history, miracles and symbolism at their website at http://www.iconoflove.org/.

Although anyone can make a private novena at any time, the Church teaches that there is added efficacy in the union of the faithful at prayer. Holding this public novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a St. Louise tradition, sponsored by the Fil-Am community. We hope in-person worship will be possible by then! Please come! The dates for the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help: May 2 in the church at 10AM; May 9, 16, 23, 30 in the chapel at 9:30AM;. June 6 in the church at 10AM; June 13, 20, 27 in the chapel at 9:30AM.

Holy Mary, we come before you as spiritual children in great need, seeking your intercession, and asking that your mantle of love surround us to console, protect and lead us

to your son Jesus.

We entrust all of God’s family, especially the Church in Western Washington into your Immaculate hands. With your Son Jesus’ gentle power you can undo any knot in our Church, and in the lives of

believers who entrust themselves to your care. Today I especially entrust to you [mention request here/Coronavirus], and I ask that – through your

intercession, and that of Saint James, our Guardian Angels, and the faithful in our diocese – we may be free from every spiritual and temporal ill, and be safely led to encounter your Son’s Merciful, Sacred Heart.

Our Lady of Seattle, Undoer of Knots, pray for us! Amen
