MASS INTENTIONS My meeting in Chicago last week was a wonderful

occasion to catch up with friends and meet new ones,

but it was also a difficult time for many of us as we

shared what’s happening in our lives, especially

what’s challenging us to grow. There was something

profound about the timing of our meeting also. Many

of us shared in the lament that our souls have often

mirrored the odd transition to Spring we’ve been

experiencing. Like nature itself, we have been slow

to awaken from the sleepiness and death of Winter.

For this reason, we were all searching for signs of

new life.

One big takeaway from the meeting that I learned or

was reminded of is that we all have our ideas about

certain things, people, even reality itself. Sometimes

these ideas are even correct ones, perhaps forged over

years of observation and in-depth study of things that,

at a certain point, in one way or another, we think we

“know.” And then we have the facts, those things

that continually happen before our eyes and that

stubbornly continue to get through to us in spite of

ourselves. They could be small ones–an unexpected

encounter, a thoughtful judgment from a person from

whom you might not expect it–or big ones, like the

sudden death of a friend. Often, these facts lead to a

fork in the road. And if you really think about it, this

is almost always the case even if we don’t realize it.

In the face of such events, we can decide to follow

their initial impact on us, giving that instant of

surprise we felt space to grow, allowing them to lead

us to discover something that’s truly new.

Alternatively, we can immediately put up our

defenses, deadening the impact of facts by forcing

everything to fit into the frameworks we already have

in mind. We often go down this second road, but

what happens when we instead decide to stay open to

them? What happens when what prevails, even for

only an instant, is that childlike wonder that the facts

continue to give us as a gift? It’s the tension between

what we have in mind and the Mystery working

before us, inviting us to follow Him. Which is better

for us?

Sharing the Gospel

I would be really happy, if only I was ? rich ?

popular ? better looking ? the boss. Those selfish

wishes sound great, but they cannot give you true

happiness inside. In today's Gospel, Jesus shares

the three secrets to his complete happiness: (1)

Jesus obeyed God; (2) Jesus knew God loved him;

(3) Jesus loved other people enough to die for

them. Wow. Jesus was completely happy, but he

was not selfish at all. In fact, Jesus told his friends

if they followed his loving example, they could be

completely happy too. Follow Jesus to be filled

with happiness from the inside out.

Prayer God, on my own I am selfish. Thank you for

loving me. Help me to obey you. Help me to love

other people as much as Jesus does.

Something to Draw

Draw a picture of yourself happily holding Jesus'

hand.

Mission for the Week

Read John 15:9-17 with your family. God loves

you, and he wants you to be completely happy, but

you need to let go of your selfishness. You can

obey God and love others by sharing your time

with them. You can show your love for God by

sharing your money with others, too.

As the month of May is especially devoted to the

Blessed Mother, pilgrimages to Monte Cassino

Shrine are held each Sunday during this month. The

pilgrimage begins with an opening hymn and a

short sermon, followed by a rosary procession. The

hour-long service ends with the Litany of the

Blessed Virgin and a hymn. Pilgrimages start at 3

p.m. Eastern Time. The shrine is located in St.

Meinrad, IN, one mile east of Saint Meinrad

Archabbey along Indiana 62.

Memorial Day Services...St. Anthony

American Legion & Auxiliary Post 493 will

attend mass as a group at the 7:00am mass

at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Following

mass, there will be a procession to the St

Anthony Cemetery where Memorial

services will be conducted. Legion

members will then proceed to Celestine

Cemetery at 8:30am; Sacred Heart

Cemetery at 9:00am; Mentor Cemetery at

9:30am; Birdseye Cemetery at 10:00am;

Cox Cemetery at 10:45am and Bretzville

Cemetery at 11:15am. From there the

participants will convene to the St. Anthony

Post home for lunch.
