DIVINE INFANT JESUS and DIVINE PROVIDENCE
CATHOLIC PARISH and SCHOOL
Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 20, 2019
Volume 19 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 20, 2019
Friends of Divine Infant Jesus and Divine Providence, Renew My Church has merged the parishes of Divine Infant Jesus and Divine Providence into one. While we don’t have a new name yet, some changes have been made and others are being considered. Joe Maddon, when released by the Cubs at the end of their 2019 season, said, “Change is good.” He is probably right if the change itself is capable of further change, meaning it is part of a broader plan. All of us here at Divine Infant Jesus and Divine Providence are just at the beginning of lots and lots of change. As the two parishes merge into one, change should be expected, even welcomed. Maybe this is the catalyst we needed to adjust and improve - whatever it takes - to rebuild and renew the Catholic community in Westchester. So far, we have a new Operations Director, John Maher, who has personnel, financial and administrative oversight over all church and school functions not reserved to the Pastor and Priests. Next up is the merger of the various lay ministries and organizations of both parishes. The first of these to be combined has been the Liturgy Committees. This new group has been meeting for over a month and has/had on its agenda helping plan special liturgies such as the Unity Mass, All Saints and All Souls Masses, the Healing Mass and Christmas and Easter. This planning includes supporting Janet Reif, our Director of Music Ministry, in developing her combined music ministry and making sure the art and environment teams have the resources they need to make the churches sparkle for each change in the liturgical season. Also, the Liturgy Committee has taken on the responsibility of evaluating the new, temporary Mass schedule. We are soliciting feed-back from both worship sites and will make a recommendation to Fr. Marcin to continue with the present schedule or – you guessed it – change again. Some change comes quickly and other change takes time to evaluate. Recommendation to adjust the Mass schedule (or keep it as is) may not come before December or later. All Souls Day is November 2nd. We will not be having a special liturgy this year, but we will still have a Table of Remembrance. Parishioners who have lost a loved one are invited to bring a small framed picture of this person for display on the table that will be set up in each church. At Divine Infant, the table will be in front of the Divine Infant Shrine. At Divine Providence, the table will be placed to the right of the new Mary and Child statue. In addition to the name of the deceased (on the front), please put your name and telephone number on the back of the picture. Pictures can be placed on the table starting October 28th, and should be removed during the first weekend of Advent, November 30th & December 1st. This will be an opportunity for all of us to join in prayer as a parish family for our deceased loved ones. Peace,
Jim Boyd Liturgy Committee

Are you interested in learning more about the Women’s Guild?
We are a parish organization originally created to support our church and school while providing a social outlet for the ladies of our parish. Most of our events have been tradition, but we are always interested and open for change and new faces.
Here are some of our events: fall potluck social, annual clothing drive, mother daughter Mass and fashion show, Santa's workshop, giving tree (in the back of church), Christmas social, father daughter Valentine's dance, mother son Mass and bowling, glow dance (4-8 grades).
We will have a short informational/planning meeting Monday, October 21 at 7pm in Langan Hall at Divine Infant.
Thank you for your interest and continued support. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting.
Any questions, please feel free to contact the DI rectory at 708.865.8071.
WHAT IS PRAYER?
Prayer is a relationship with God. It is a way for us to communicate all our fears, uncertainties, hopes and dreams to our Lord God. It is a way in which we openly thank our God for all the gifts given to us. Prayer lifts our minds and hearts out of our everyday problems and opens the soul to receive God. Prayer in not simply an event, nor is it only words or actions. It is all those things and more. As we become mindful of God’s presence in us and in all things, our whole life becomes a prayer. Prayers open us to our deepest level of an ongoing relationship with God. Your relationship with God is yours and yours alone; cultivate it, nurture it and JUST PRAY because God listens.

Please remember to pray for all the souls that have gone home to heaven.

PERSISTENCE Today’s readings are about persistence, passionate persistence. Exodus tells of a battle won despite weariness because Moses, with help from Aaron and Hur, held his hands raised. Timothy asks that same persistence of his community and us. Luke tells of a court case won by a widow, despite the dishonesty of the judge, because she will not leave him alone. The psalm reminds us that God is everywhere, guarding us from harm day and night, coming and going, now and forever. The readings are about persistence, the relentless, unwavering pursuit of what must not be lost. The readings are about God’s passionate persistence in pursuing us, seeking to win our hearts. All Bakers are welcome and appreciated!
On October 6, over 350 of Chicago’s deacons and wives gathered at Elmcrest Banquets for the Diaconate’s Annual St. Francis Day Dinner. In attendance at the dinner were a number of our parishioners, courtesy of our parish.
Also, our parish was generous in purchasing an ad in the Dinner’s ad book. On behalf of myself, Deacon Richard Hudzik, and the Diaconate Community of the Archdiocese of Chicago, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to you, our parish community, for your support of our efforts to raise funds to aid the work and mission of the Diaconate Council. The Council’s primary source of income is the St. Francis Day Dinner. Monies raised at this event help us to continue the various charities supported by our community, such as Hope’s On the Way, Emmaus Street Ministries, Zacchaeus House, Kolbe House, Women at the Well, Friends of the Orphans, and more. If you have specific questions about our Chicago’s Diaconate (the largest in the world!), please visit our website www.deacons.archchicago.org or reach out to Deacon Richard or myself. We could not do our ministry without your generosity and prayers. Your support is in-valuable to us. Thank you, again! You are in our prayers. May God bless you, Deacon Jim Sponder

Join One of Our Parish Music Groups
New enrollment is welcome in most of our groups through October! Our Adult Choir opens up for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. Currently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Advent/Christmas season, so newcomers are welcome to join us at our organizational/first rehearsal on Wednesday, October 23, from 7:15 PM until 9:15 PM in the music area of DI Church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice as well as the time and dedication to devote to regular weekly rehearsals (on Wednesdays) and liturgies. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that rehearsal. We will sing at both parish sites (DI Church and DP Church). Our Divine Angel Choir (grades 2-4) is having their first official rehearsal of the season on Sunday, October 20 from 9:00 – 9:45 am in the newly re-located and decorated music room on the 2nd floor of Divine Infant School. Come to the northwest door of DI School on October 20 at 9 am to sign-up if you haven’t already done so. The children sing once a month at Sunday mass. This group will welcome 1st graders right after Christmas! Our most recent addition to our music family is a group of junior high students from our School and Religious Education that we call Divine Singers. Rehearsals are happening at Divine Providence School for their school group and RE group. Rehearsals are taking place at DI School before RE classes on Mondays for the DI RE group. Please encourage anyone in grades 5 - 8 who likes to sing to join our group. They sing once a month at a parish liturgy. We welcome back our Hand Chimes Ensemble who are already rehearsing and planning for the season. Our ringers are from grades 5 – 8. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 3:00 – 3:45 pm at Divine Providence Church. The group will play once a month at a parish liturgy. The Strings of Faith are already in session for the season. They are currently working on their full season schedule. The Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song year-round. We usually accept new membership to this group during the summer. The DI Resurrection Choir sings year-round at funerals at Divine Infant Church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice and availability for funerals Monday through Saturday usually at 10am when there is a funeral. The Resurrection Choir will also sing at funerals at Divine Providence Church, as needed. However, everyone who is available to sing and interested in this ministry is welcome to join. If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Judy Schindler (708-383-4288 or [email protected]) who coordinates this ministry. The Youth Ensemble is open to young people of high school and college age who enjoy singing or playing a musical instrument. These young people must come to us with a blendable singing voice and some level of accomplishment on the instrument. This group is doing some re-organizing this season. Please watch for more information as we revitalize! Let us know if you or someone in your family is interested in being part of this group.
For further information about any of our music groups, please contact Janet Reif, Director of Music Ministry

World Mission Sunday
October 20
For the past several years, our Universal Church has called upon all its members to celebrate the central mission and purpose of the Church: evangelization. One Sunday was set aside as the focal point for this celebration, one marked throughout the world by all its churches, parishes and dioceses. On this day, Catholics world-wide gathered to pray, to reflect and to contribute in whatever way possible to this central mission.
Pope Francis I wishes to give this mission even greater prominence in the life of the Church. He has designated October 2019 to be an Extraordinary Mission Month to further emphasize the important role to be played in furthering the missionary nature of the Church by all Catholics. The theme for this Extraordinary Mission Month is:
“Baptized and sent: the Church of Christ on mission in the world.”
POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II October 22nd
Charles Joseph Wotjtyla was born in 1920 in Wadowice, Poland.
After his ordination to the priesthood and theological studies in Rome, he returned to his homeland and resumed various pastoral and academic tasks. He became First Auxiliary Bishop and in 1964, Archbishop of Krakow and took part in the Second Vatican Council.
On October 16, 1978 he was elected pope and took the name John Paul II. His exceptional apostolic zeal, particularly for families, young people and the sick, led him to numerous pastoral visits throughout the world. Among the many fruits which he has left as a heritage to the Church are above all his rich Magisterium and the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church as well as the Code of Canon Law for the Latin Church and for the Eastern Churches. In Rome on April 2, 2005, the eve of the Second Sunday of Easter (or of Divine Mercy), he departed peacefully to the Lord.
On October 12, 2012, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, confirmed the inscription of Saint John Paul II, Pope, into the proper Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America. Two years later, on May 29, 2014, Pope Francis ordered the inscription of Saint John Paul II into the General Roman Calendar.
St. John Paul is celebrated each year as an Optional Memorial on October 22.

SIX LITTLE STORIES WITH LOTS OF MEANINGS….
Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer, all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That is FAITH. When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That is TRUST. Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarm to wake up. That is HOPE. We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That is CONFIDENCE. We see the world suffering, but still, we get married and have children. That is LOVE. On a older mans shirt was written a sentence, “ I am not 80 years old; I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.” That is ATTITUDE.
