About Photosensitive Seizures READ THIS NOTICE BEFORE YOU OR YOUR CHILD USE ANY VIDEO GAME

A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certainvisual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games.Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed con-dition that can cause these photosensitive epileptic seizures while watching video games.

These seizures may have a variety of symptoms including: lightheadedness, alteredvision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, con-fusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of conscious-ness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects.

Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of thesesymptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms.Children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures.

The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by playing in a well-litroom, and not playing when you are drowsy or fatigued. Regardless of how youfeel, you should ALWAYS take a 10 to 15 minute break every hour while playing.

If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing.

In addition to allowing you to select graphic method and resolution, theconfiguration tool also allows you to select whether you want to use thealpha bit blitting method and whether you want smoothness to be acti-vated or not. You should only touch these checkboxes in case you haveproblems or if the game runs too slow (see Troubleshooting).

TROUBLESHOOTING:Problem: Black squares appear around the imagery in the game

Cause: Your videocard does not support colorkeying

Solution: Turn on the alpha bit in the configuration tool

Problem: I get all kinds of graphical artifacts

Cause: Fog is not being supported by your driver/colorkeying is failing

Solution: Turn on the alpha bit in the configuration tool. Also, switch off fog in the video options within the game

Problem: My mouse cursor becomes very slow when parts of the interface pop up in the game

Cause: Colorkeying is slow on your video drivers

Solution: Turn on the alpha bit in the configuration tool

Problem: The game runs very slow on my system

Cause: There can be multiple reasons

Solution: Doing one/all of the following things should help you speed up the game to a playable level

1) Switch off fog

2) Turn on the alpha bit in the configuration tool

3) Set resolution to 640x480 in the configuration tool

4) In the configuration tool, turn the option smoothness off

5) Set quality to low or very low

6) Make sure you have enough virtual memory available on your system

7) If your card is a voodoo card, try using glide instead of direct3D

Problem: None of the above solutions solve my graphic problems

Cause: It could be that your videocard is not compatible with Divine Divinity.

Solution: Select either directdraw or software in the configuration tool (whichever runs faster)

PLEASE VIEW THE DIVINE DIVINITY README FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE OPTIONS.

Getting Started

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:Minimum system requirements: Pentium II 450 Mhz, 128 MB Ram, DirectXcompatible video card, 4x speed CD-ROM drive, DirectX compatible soundcard, mouse and 2,5 GB free disc space. Monitor and video card mustsupport a minimum resolution of 640x480.

You must be running Windows 98, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2,Windows XP or Windows ME in order to play Divine Divinity.

INSTALLATION:Place the first Divine Divinity disc in your CD-ROM drive. If your computerhas Autorun capability, the Divine Divinity installer menu will automatical-ly appear on your screen. If your computer´s Autorun function is disabled, you will have to run the SETUP.EXE file manually from the root directory ofthe first game CD. Then follow the installer instructions. You can launchthe game by clicking on the Divine Divinity icon on your desktop or bychoosing the corresponding entry in the Start - Programs - DivineDivinity menu.

CONFIGURATION:When you run Divine Divinity for the first time, the game's configurationtool will pop up. This configuration tool tries to detect the videocard onyour system. We strongly recommend you do not change the settingssuggested by the configuration tool. Run the test by clicking on the testbutton. Only if you have problems running the game should you trychanging some of the settings (see Troubleshooting). After the test hascompleted, click on the "apply&close" button that has now becomeavailable. The configuration tool will close, and the game will start up.

The configuration tool allows you to specify which graphic method DivineDivinity will use to display the contents of the gameworld. The preferredmethod is Direct3D mode but you can also select Software mode,DirectDraw mode or for 3DFX cards, Glide mode. In addition to choosingthe graphic method, you can also choose in which resolution you want toplay the game. As a rule of thumb, the higher the resolution you select, the more powerful your system needs to be. So, if the game runs too slow, you might want to try running it at a lower resolution.

After you changed a setting in the configuration tool, you need to test it. Todo so, click on the test button. Your display will switch to the requestedmode, and test if the mode is compatible with your graphics card/driver. If the test is successful, you will be able to click on the apply and close button, which will store your settings on your hard drive. When next yourun Divine Divinity, your new settings will be used.

FOREWORD

Dear player,

First of all, in name of the wholeteam, I want to thank you for buy-ing this game. As forewords go, thisis probably not the most originalthing to say, but nonetheless, we dowant to make a point of thanking you.By buying this game, especially inthese times of wanton piracy, youare rewarding us for all the timeand effort we’ve put into creatingDivine Divinity, and that deservessome words of gratitude. I hope that when you fin-ish the game, you’ll feel that it was well worth yourinvestment.

When we set out to create Divine Divinity, we hadone clear design goal: To create a game that isinstantly accessible for the majority of gamers byproviding simple and fun gameplay. At the sametime, we wanted to maintain an enormousamount of depth for those among you who preferto stand still for a while and reflect on what’sgoing on. Or, put more simply: We wanted toblend the best of both hardcore and simple actionrole-playing games.

We applied that idea to almost every single part ofthe game. The amount of development problemsthis caused was tremendous, and at points we feltthat it was all one big mistake, and that we werenever going to make it. Our idea was that to bring

There is an infinite number of ways of playingDivine Divinity, and you just picked up the onethat suited you best. And that I think is cool.

Good luck while playing, and don’t let the youngduke dissuade you.

you this blend, Divine Divinity should appear atfirst glance to be a simple hack and slash actionrole-playing game. Then, as you progress throughthe game, you should gradually discover moreand more things that you can do, picking up thoseactions you enjoy, while disregarding those youdon’t like. The main rule here was ”We don’t forcethe player to do anything. We just give him theoption”. When we first thought of doing the gamethis way, we thought players would think this wascool. What we didn’t expect was that to pull thisoff we’d have to implement such a staggeringamount of features.

As I am writing this foreword, we’re still heavilytesting the game, but from observing the testers Ithink we have succeeded in our objective. Most ofthem come in thinking they’re going to be playinga pure hack and slash game, and in the first hoursof playing they indeed behave like they are play-ing a hack and slash game. Then they start dis-covering things, and I see them disperse into verydifferent playing styles, which is exactly what wewanted.

I hope that when you start playing yourself, youwill discover a vast world full of wonders, con-taining much more than you ever expected whenyou picked up this box. If at some point duringthe playing of this game you find yourself won-dering: “What am I playing now? An action adven-ture or a role playing game?”, know that it is in -actuality - what you decided to play.

ome call them thieves and cutthroatsbut the fairness of it is that Survivors havemore morals than many a wealthy merchant orthose in political office. They endure life byrelying on their quick wits and equally quick reflexes. If these abilities work favorably towards relieving thegreedy of their heavy purses to help keep them fed, then so be it. Survivors tend to view themselves as vic-tims of a corrupt society where the rich get richer andthe poor simply starve. A representative of theMerchant’s Guild once asked a well-known cut-purse,caught operating in Verdistis, whether he felt any guiltat stealing the hard-earned money from honest mer-chants. “I will let you know when I find one to stealfrom,“ came the contemptuous reply.

Traits

lthough Survivors are adept at stealthand would prefer to remain hidden from anopponent in order to achieve their goals, they are still competent fighters. They favorlight and fast weapons such as bows, spears anddaggers. Many even develop the ability to hide inshadows, set devious traps and develop a proficien-cy in the art of poisoning.

old, sharp steel and hardened armorare the warriors’ closest companions in theirfight to meet evil head on and defeat it withglory. The clashing of steel and the clamor ofbattle is music to their ears. Through rigorous train-ing with some of the heaviest weapons available, warriors develop high strength and vitality, allowingthem to wield brutal weapons and don the heaviestarmor in battle. Warriors can be found in abundancethroughout the land of Rivellon, particularly duringthese dark times. When they are not in the midst ofbattle, you will likely find them at the nearest tavernspeaking of great deeds past and present, or fre-quenting the local weapon shops.

Traits

trength and honor is the mark of awarrior. They place great importance onphysical power. They are easily angeredbut also quick to call anyone who showsvalor in the face of adversity a friend. Some of themost powerful warriors in Rivellon possess notonly great strength, but can also develop skills tocast powerful enchantments on weapons to boosttheir effectiveness in combat.

any townsfolk finding themselveson the same roadside as an approachingmage are likely to hasten to the other side.“Arrogant”, “Self-serving” and “Too power-ful for their own good,” are just some of the com-ments made (behind their backs) about theseenigmatic figures. Yet look back through history tothe many wars and epic battles between good andevil, and you shall find their kind playing pivotalroles in keeping the forces of hell at bay.“If it was not for the powers of magic during the lastgreat war, the League of the Seven Races wouldhave surely been destroyed by Lord Chaos and oneof his Damned would be walking these streetsinstead of me.” commented one irritated mage.Giving their will over completely to the study ofcomplex magic grants the mages almost unri-valled intellect and great reserves of inner magicalpower. They largely shun armor and weapons infavor of battle magic to defeat their enemy.

Traits

ages may be relatively weak in phys-ical strength, but they command powerfulforces by will of their intellect. A searingfireball spell will kill an opponent as surelyas a blade to the neck. The more powerful magescan even gain mastery of the elements and sum-mon creatures to aid them in battle.

While running, your character’s stamina (see the Game Interfacescreen) will begin to deplete. When stamina reacheszero, your character will slow to walking speed and youmust wait until he regains some of his stamina beforehe can run again. You regain stamina the fastest whilestanding still. You may also make your character togglebetween running and walking by pressing the appropri-ate keyboard-shortcut ('R' by default)

Using objects together – You can use someobjects on each other. For instance you can use anempty mug on a barrel of beer to fill the mug. To dothis you simply pick up the mug and drag it over thebarrel and drop the mug onto the barrel. The mugwill then be placed on the ground full of beer, readyfor you to pick up. perfectly possible they won't even want to talk withyou. In that case you might want to try giving themgifts. Another thing affected by attitude is how the dif-ferent NPCs react when you do something mean tothem. If they like you a lot, you might get away withit. So, being nice pays. Attitudes range fromHostile (the worst) to Admiring (the best). Actionssuch as stealing from or attacking someoneobviously make them less than pleased withyou. You also have a choice of polite or ruderesponses when speaking with characters.

In short, you can be anything from a devilto a saint... the choice is yours.

Starting a conversation

ome conversations start automatically, depend-ing on the situation and the point at which you are inthe story. To begin a conversation manually, simplymove the mouse pointer over a character and click theleft mouse button. This will bring up the dialog window.

The main text window is where all the conversationtakes place. Yellow text is what the character you arespeaking with is saying to you and the numbered whitetext below shows your choice of questions and replies.

You can drag anddrop any appropriateitems onto your character, and if he or she has theskills required to use thatitem, it will be equipped. You can also equip yourcharacter with belts, gloves, rings and amulets(preferably magical of course) on this screen.

Interacting with People (NPCs)

t’s important to remember that every single char-acter in Divine Divinity can have different attitudestowards you. If you move your mouse pointer overthe character you will see their name, health and theircurrent attitude level in blue text. Attitude affects anumber of things one of the most notable is the ben-efit when trading. If someone doesn't like you thenwhen you trade with them you will find their priceshigh. Additionally, if someone doesn't like you it's

Trading

n Divinity you can trade with many characters toearn money, buy various items or to repair and identifyobjects. To begin trading, you need to start a conversa-tion with someone, and then you need to click on theTrade icon. This brings up a separate trading window. On the left is your portrait and all the items you cur-rently have in your inventory. To trade an item, click onit to transfer it to the trade window. Underneath eachitem stands the price and if applicable, the amount ofinstances of that item that you possess. If the price ofan item is marked yellow, it means you are currentlywearing the item. The value of the item or items youhave placed in the trade window appears at the top ofyour trade window. Once you´ve placed all you wish totrade in the trade window, press one of the Scales iconsin order to even out the value difference with money. To complete the trade, click on the Check mark icon toaccept the transaction. Not all characters are willing totrade with you. Some have nothing to trade, someimportant people think trading is beneath them andothers, such as creatures, simply don’t like you. In suchcases, the trade icon will be grayed out and will do noth-ing when clicked on. Also, if you annoy someone withwhom you have traded in the past, they will not want totrade with you anymore. In this case, the trade icon isavailable, but clicking on it reveals that the NPC’s tradeinventory is empty. You can give away items as gifts bysimply putting the objects into your trade window andclicking on the Check mark icon to initiate the trade.Giving gifts to characters is one way to change the waythey feel about you. So if you need to get into the goodbooks of a character that you have annoyed, give themgifts and their attitude will gradually change.

30

To the left of the text display are the dialog icons. Atthe top is the portrait of the person you are currentlyspeaking with and below this are the Trade, History andClose icons. Clicking on History allows you to lookback at what has been said so far. Simply use thescrollbar or arrows to scroll through the text. If youwish to end the conversation immediately, simple clickthe Close icon. Note that ending conversations this waymay be considered rude by some NPCs and their atti-tude towards you may suffer. Also, during importantconversations, the Close icon is disabled.

To facilitate targeting during com-bat, hold down the CTRL key. This key automati-cally selects the enemy that is the closest to yourmouse cursor. You will find that combat is a lot eas-ier if you use the CTRL key.

It is impossible to target friendly characters withoffensive skills. If you wish to engage them in com-bat, you must first declare your intention of fightingthem by left clicking on them while in combatmode. Once you have declared that you will attackthem, they will turn hostile and you will be able tocast use offensive skills on them.
