    About NX CAM

NXTM CAM software has helped many of the worlds leading manufacturers and job shops produce better

parts faster. You can also achieve similar benefits by making use of the unique advantages NX CAM

    offers.

This is one of many hands-on demonstrations designed to introduce you to the powerful capabilities in

NX CAM 9.0.3. In order to run this demonstration, you will need access to NX CAM 9.0.3.

Hands-on Demonstration: Divide cut region using a line

You can now specify the orientation of the plane along which the divide line projects when dividing a cut

region in Area Milling operations. This gives you more control over dividing the cut region.

Preview allows you to see the regions before completing the division.

    Prerequisites:

    1. You will need access to NX 9.0.3 in order to run this demonstration.

    2. If you havent done so already, download and unzip divide_cut_region_using_a_line.7z.

    Demo:

    1. Open divide_cut_region.prt in NX.

    2. In the Program Order View of the Operation Navigator, double-click CONTOUR_AREA to edit

    the operation.

    3. In the Geometry section of the dialog box, click Cut Regions .

    4. Select CONTOUR_AREA_R_2 in the Operation Regions list.

    5. Click Divide.

    6. Select the approximate points indicated below on the edges of the non-steep cut region as the

start and end points of the divide line (use Point on Curve to make selection easier).

  • 5

    7. Be sure Tool Axis is selected from the Divide Plane list.

    8. In the Preview section of the dialog box, click Display .

The sectioning plane (illustrated here, but not displayed in the graphics window) is created

through the divide line and parallel to the tool axis. This is the same behavior as in NX9.0.2. This

option is useful for dividing non-steep regions.

    9. Click OK in the Divide Region dialog box.

    10. Select CONTOUR_AREA_R_2_1 first and then CONTOUR_AREA_R_2_2 in the Operation

Regions list to see that the cut region has been divided.

  • 6

Next, you will define the sectioning plane normal to the tool axis. This can be useful for dividing steep

    regions.

    11. Click Undo to combine the regions.

    12. Select CONTOUR_AREA_R_1 in the Operation Regions list.

    13. Click Divide .

    14. Select the approximate points indicated below on the edges of the steep cut region.

    11. With Tool Axis still selected in the Divide Plane list, click Display .

Notice how Divide Plane (the only method available in NX9.0.2) does not divide the region

cleanly and in this case is not appropriate for a steep cut region.

    12. Select Normal to Tool Axis from the Divide Plane list. This option is new.

In the Preview section of the dialog box, click Display .

The sectioning plane (illustrated here, but not displayed in the graphics window) is created

through the divide line and normal to the tool axis.

    13. Click OK in the Divide Region dialog box.

    14. Select CONTOUR_AREA_R_1_1 first and then CONTOUR_AREA_R_1_2 in the Operation

Regions list to see that the cut region has been divided.

    15. Click Undo to combine the regions.

Lastly, you will define the sectioning plane by specifying an angle relative to the tool axis. This is the

most flexible method and is useful in cases where Tool Axis and Normal to Tool Axis do not give

    satisfactory results.

    16. Select CONTOUR_AREA_R_1 in the Operation Regions list.

    17. Click Divide .

    18. Select the approximate points indicated below on edges of the steep cut region.

  • 8

    15. Select Dynamic from the Divide Plane list. This option is new.

    16. Drag the handle or type a value in the Angle from Tool Axis box.

    17. In the Preview section of the dialog box, click Display .

The sectioning plane (illustrated here, but not displayed in the graphics window) is created

through the divide line at the specified angle relative to the tool axis. The sectioning plane rotates

about the divide line. The divide line may not be parallel to the tool axis.

    18. Click OK in the Divide Region dialog box.

  • 9

    19. Select CONTOUR_AREA_R_1_1 first and then CONTOUR_AREA_R_1_2 in the Operation

Regions list to see that the cut region has been divided.

    19. Click OK in the Cut Regions dialog box.

    20. Click OK to complete the operation.

    21. Close the part file without saving.
