RAUMAG-JANICH has developed and patented a newdiverter blade design for combined cycle gas turbineplants, although the design is also suitable for other hightemperature applications. It has proved itself already in awide variety of installations. By means of computer simu-lations it’s behaviour under varying service conditions isexactly predictable in advance. In combination withthe new NICROFLEX-HIPERFORM DBP, sealingsystem distinguished by it’s high resilience andstability when exposed to high gas velocities, thisdesign concept provides, especially for verylarge damper dimensions, an advantageoussolution. The illustrations depict the design ofthe lattice support structure of adiverter blade for a gas turbinepower plant.

The patented lattice structuresupported Diverter blade

Two cover plates are fitted upon this structure by methods whichpermit them to expand and contract in all directions when heatingup and thus avert any distortions. The hot gas flows freely throughthe lattice structure so that the temperature of its members changeevenly and no deformations occur irrespective of the speed withwhich the temperature changes take place. The blade may be equipped with single or double sided thermallagging in order to reduce heat transfer into the closed downsection of the plant.

Specially intended for large shut-off dampers and divertersfor combined cycle gas turbine power stations, RAUMAG-JANICH developed the new NICROFLEX-HIPERFORMsealing system.

Geometrically circular metal loop sealing elements afford apermanently high resilience of 30 mm, and more withenlarged loops. This facilitates the neutralisation of certainmisalignments or heat expansion of very large damperblades.

In uncompressed condition (damper open) the internalvee-shaped stabiliser bars provide the loops with additio-nal lateral strength. (illustration above)

The seal element is free of high metal stress points whichnormally appear when stainless steel seals are subject tocant operations in the course of their fabrication. Suchoperations are unnecessary in manufacturing the circularseals. Due to this they will be able to better withstanddamage or destruction as a result of high gas velocities, vibrations or severe turbulences.Reliable gas flow modulation during boiler start up is alsopossible without negative effects on the seal.

Illustration below: In compressed condition (damperclosed) a wide area of contact is created between sealand mating surface which provides a very good initialtightness. The loop flattens and two semicircular shapedbulges extend sideways on both sides which provide theseal with strength to withstand high gas pressure. The internal vee-shaped stabilizer also acts as anend stop limiting seal compression and preventing itsunintended overdeformation.

The seals resilience can be easily adjusted to suit actualconditions by simply inserting one or more back up barsinto the loop.

Even deformations by point loads (tramp material) areneutralized by the seal which regains contact with itsmating surface within a very short distance.

With a single set of seals of this type the area equivalentdamper thightness is 99,98%.With double seals and seal air a 100% tight, man safeshut-off is accomplished.

The external dual toggle leveractuation (Patents applied)

5

RAUMAG-JANICH has developed a unique new externaldual toggle lever actuation method for diverters whichprovides for a turning angle of 180 degrees. This offers anumber of advantages for the damper operation and itsreliable function.Large sized diverters are designed with an internal togglelever system. With this it is of advantage to apply theactuation forces at the blade centre in order to obtainsymmetrical loads on the blade and its seals. Also, in theblade end positions, when the blade is subjected to thehighest differential pressure and the seals make contactwith the landing bars, the toggle lever system provides foran effective conversion of drive torque into high closingforce.

Hydraulic cylinders acting with single or double levers can,on account of the geometry of the lever system, attainonly relatively small turning angles. To overcome this, theposition of the main drive shaft is usually shifted towardsthe pivoting point of the blade. This however, results in aninsufficient utilisation of the internal toggle lever system inthe end positions of the blade when the acting differentialpressure is greatest and the seals are pressed down firmlyonto the landing bars. Consequently, the cylinders have tobe dimensioned for higher forces. The required torque inthe end positions is also higher. Generally, the whole drivesystem will have to cope with heavier loads.

The new dual toggle lever actuation method attainsa 180 degrees turning angle, it facilitates the optimalutilisation of the internal lever system and thereforerequires lower actuating forces. For these reasons, only one cylinder each side is required for the diver-ter operation.

Electric actuationDIVERTERS requi-ring no modulatingoperations oremergency func-tion are equippedwith multiturn elec-tric actuators.

The illustration onthe right depicts atypical actuatorarrangement.

Latticed girder actuating mechanism(Patents applied)

6

A new development of RAUMAG-JANICH is thelattice girder actuating mechanism for diverters.

This design supersedes the usually used heavy walledtubes, sometimes even fabricated by welding two U-shaped sections together. This causes a considerableloss of free damper area. Furthermore, on opening thebypass, the tube is temporarily exposed to high tem-perature gas flowing predominately from one directionas well as the release of welding stresses, both ofwhich cause distortion of the hollow section.

The lattice girder design averts all those disadvanta-ges. The high temperature gas flows freely throughthe lattice structure so that all its members heat upevenly with the result that heat distortion is completelyabsent. Not only is the loss of free damper area lowerbut the component weight is also reduced to aminimum.

The picture below depicts the lattice girder actuatingmechanism of a DIVERTER, ND 5600 x 5600 mm.

Externally positioned sphericalsleeve bearings supportthe drive shaft

7

The main diverter drive shaft is sup-ported by externally positioned, main-tenance free, spherical sleeve bearingsfitted into dust tight casings. Neither themedium nor the plant environment canharmfully effect them in any way.The large, specially coated, sphericalbearing surfaces prevent damage orstiff movement in the presence ofsevere vibrations. The passages of theshafts through the casing are sealed bypacking glands with internal supportrings.

Dampers with double seals in conjunc-tion with seal air injection between thetwo sealing planes attain a 100% tight, man safe, shut-off. The seal air pressureneeds to be higher than the pressure ofthe flue gas. This type of system corre-sponds to UVV.In order to prevent gas leakage into ashut-off section in case of a seal airfan breakdown a standby facility isprovided.

The illustration depicts a typicalarrangement of the seal air fans.

DIVERTERS for Off-Shoreinstallations

10

RAUMAG-JANICH developed divertersspecially for off-shore service. In view of the operating conditions casingand all internals are made of stainless steel. The diverters are powered by hydraulic orpneumatic systems with accumulators foremergency operation in case of power failure. The design incorporates the proven latticestructure blade concept. The NICROFLEX-HIPERFORM sealing system permits gas flowmodulation in all positions.

Picture left and on theright below: depict anew, also patented, sea-ling arrangement withwhich a 100% tight shut-off is accomplished byusing only a single sealsystem. On account ofthe broad contactsurface created when thedamper is closed it ispossible to effect a shut-off by creating two sea-ling surfaces.Gas leakage is preven-ted, as usual by theinjection of seal air. Thismethod is of specialadvantage for off-shorediverters.

Of particularimportance was the proposed solution formodulating the gas flow in view of the extremeoperating and climatic conditions .

RAUMAG-JANICH secured an order fromKANFA-TECfor the design and supply of diverters destined for theWHRU’s of off-shore generator plants in the Barents sea. They were made completely of heat resisting stainlesssteel and of a special design developed by RAUMAG-JANICH for such applications. Apart from the high ex-haust gas temperature the local outside temperature ofminus 46 degrees C. had to be taken into consideration.

Picture below and right: If required RAUMAG-JANICHdoes supply diverter type dampers with louver type bla-des. The lattice frame supported single shroud bladedesign minimizes the pressure drop across damper.High temperature gas flows freely through the supportframe with all members heating up evenly. Thereforeheat distortion is completely averted. (Off-shore plantAlvheim, Norway).
