Executive Summary

Students

• Few students say that the College has exposed them to different world cultures (30%), world religions (24%), political perspectives (27%), or issues related to social class (35%)

o Full-time students, students between 22- and 30-years of age, students with at least some involvement on

campus, and students who plan to continue their education at Owens say that the College has exposed them to more diverse ideas than their counterparts

• The proportion of students’ who say that they have opportunities for interaction with diverse people is also relatively

modest: 46% say that there are opportunities for interaction with diverse students, 44% say that there are opportunities for interaction with diverse faculty and staff, and only 29% say that there are opportunities for interaction with diverse individuals from outside the institution

o Students with at least some involvement on campus and students who plan to continue their education at

Owens say that there are more opportunities to interact with diverse people than students with no involvement and students who do not plan to stay at Owens

• With regard to respect for diversity, the institution fares a little better: 64% of students say that the College

more likely to say that the College communicates the importance of respecting those with differing opinions than students with no involvement on campus and students who do not plan to stay at Owens

Faculty/Staff

• Faculty and staff perceptions of how well students are exposed to diverse ideas are a little higher than those of students: 42% say that the institution’s curriculum includes appropriate attention to diverse ideas and 35% say that appropriate attention is given to it through out-of-class activities

• However, faculty and staff perceptions of the amount of opportunity for students to interact with individuals from

diverse backgrounds fairly closely mirrors that of students’ perceptions: 48% say that the institution provides opportunities for students to interact with other students from differing backgrounds and cultures, 42% say that the institution provides opportunities for students to interact with faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds, and 28% say that the institution provides students opportunities to interact with people outside the institution from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

• Lastly, faculty and staff perceptions of how well the institution communicates the importance of respecting diversity

and other standards of behavior are lower than that of students: 47% of faculty and staff say that the institution communicates to new students the importance of respecting others with differing opinions and 48% say that the institution communicates the importance of standards of behavior within an academic community

• Differences among groups:

o Part-time and adjunct faculty and staff rate the institution higher on all aspects of diversity than full-time

faculty and staff with rank o Faculty and staff on the Toledo Campus say that the institution provides more opportunities for students to

interact with students from differing backgrounds and cultures than faculty and staff on the Findlay Campus
