On December 27, 2006, the National Law Journal selectedKramer Levin from among scores of nominees to receiveone of the publication’s four Pro Bono Awards for 2006.The award recognized the firm’s “singular achievement”in litigating a high-profile federal case that was the firstto hold that private voter registration drives are protectedby the First Amendment. The ruling had cleared the way for the immediateresumption of voter registration efforts in anticipation ofthe 2006 November elections.

The article quoted Deborah Goldberg, director of thedemocracy program at the Brennan Center for Justice atNYU School of Law, as saying that the case is on the

leading edge of voting rights jurisprudence, and notedthat it has already been cited in rulings in other statesstriking down voter registration restrictions. Wendy Weiserof the Brennan Center and Elizabeth S. Westfall, seniorattorney with the Advancement Project, both co-counselin the case, were also quoted praising Kramer Levin forits commitment to the litigation and the quality of itswork in a high-pressure situation.

Litigation Partner Barry Berkeand Kramer Levin were recentlyhonored by the Coalition for theHomeless at this year’s ARTWALKNY for their work in fighting forthe legal rights of homeless NewYorkers. Kramer Levin also spon-sored the event, which was heldat the Puck Building.

Since 1995, ARTWALK NY has united artists and art-lovers in an effort to help the homeless men, women, andchildren living in New York City. Now in its twelfth year,ARTWALK NY has become one of New York City’s largestand most anticipated annual art benefit auctions. Allproceeds from ARTWALK NY directly fund Coalitionfor the Homeless programs.

Interviewer: Barry, what got you involved with Coalitionfor the Homeless in the first place? Was it a personal choiceor something that grew out of a business scenario?

Barry: I initially was asked to assist the Coalition with alitigation matter on a pro bono basis. The more I learned

about the Coalition, its staff and the extraordinary workthey perform, the more I was drawn to the organization andits mission. I continued working with the Coalition on avariety of other issues, along with many other people atKramer Levin, and then was asked to join the Board.

Interviewer: Do you feel that the New York communitycan do more to help the homeless situation? If so, how?

Barry: Earlier this month, the Coalition issued its annualState of the Homeless report, which highlighted that thenumber of homeless families in New York City sheltersincreased by over 17% and the number of homelesschildren increased by over 18% in the past year. As withmany seemingly intractable problems, it is difficult tofigure out how to personally become involved to help tofind solutions. One possible way to get involved is tosupport the Coalition, which provides many suchopportunities. Within our own Kramer Levin community,we’ve had people lead drives for school supplies forhomeless children, teach classes for homeless women tryingto re-enter the job force and sponsor homeless childrenso they can attend the Coalition’s summer camp.■

The Greening of Kramer Levin A group of about a dozen Kramer Levin partners and associates, ardent environmental stewards all, met recently toconvene the firm’s first Environmental Committee meeting. The group put forward ideas on how to reduce wastefulpractices, like high carbon emission, and energy, paper and plastic waste. The committee is enthusiastic about launchingan informational campaign on its initiatives to increase awareness (for example, take the stairs and not the elevator;contract car service companies that use hybrid cars; and have silverware in conference rooms instead of plastic cutlery). It will present to firm management environmental measures that not only protect the community in which we work, but also can yield long-term cost savings. ■
