DIVERSITY CALENDAR 2016

University of Glasgow Diversity Calendar 2016

The University of Glasgow has adopted a strategic plan to take us forward to 2020. People – our staff and students and our wider communities – are at the very heart of that plan. Our University is full of inspiring people. Our aim is to inspire others and between us change the world for the better. We are a place where the best people, staff and students, regardless of background, are given an education that prepares them to go into the world and make change happen.A place where research that positively impacts the health, wealth and cultural wellbeing of the world is conducted.A place that engages with the city of Glasgow and the global community and ensures that they flourish. The University has an active and engaged Equality and Diversity Unit and an outward-looking and inclusive multi-faith Chaplaincy. Together they have helped create this 2016 Calendar which we hope celebrates the diverse nature of the University community.By promoting respect and understanding between people of all backgrounds, we hope we can inspire people to create a world based on the principles of dignity, fairness, equality and respect.

Anton MuscatelliPrincipal and Vice-Chancellor

A message from the President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC)

As we celebrate the SRC’s 130th birthday in March 2016 it is worth remembering the progress that has been made in creating a more tolerant, open and inclusive society and the role that this University has played in that. Our students have a rich and diverse history, from the pioneers of Scottish university education for women, Janet Galloway and Isabella Elder, to the first African American to receive a medical degree anywhere, James McCune Smith. The University of Glasgow has therefore always been home to people from many backgrounds. These days we have students and staff from across the world, vibrant and inclusive faith groups, and a burgeoning LGBT+ community, to give just a few examples. It will be the students educated here today and imbued with the principles of dignity, fairness, equality and respect that will change the world for the next 130 years.

Liam KingPresident of the Students’ Representative Council

University Equality StatementThe University of Glasgow is committed to promoting equality in all its activities and aims to provide a work, learning, research and teaching environment free from discrimination and unfair treatment.

The University is a Stonewall Scotland Diversity Champion. We were very proud to be one of only six universities in the UK to have scored full marks in Stonewall’s Gay by Degree 2015 guide.

We have an active staff LGBT Network and a number of vibrant LGBTI student societies; indeed the Glasgow University LGBTQ+ students’ society (GULGBTQ+) was voted Student Group of the Year at the inaugural Scottish LGBTI Awards ceremony in 2015.

We celebrate and value the diversity of our students, staff and visitors. The University pioneered the concept of an interfaith chaplaincy with the aim of creating an environment where the cultural, religious and non-religious or similar philosophical beliefs of all are respected.

The Chaplaincy provides spiritual support and facilities for students and staff regardless of religion or belief position held.

Chaplains/Advisers have been appointed from the Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Humanist and Hindu faith communities. They are members of the Scottish Interfaith Council or members of Action Together of Churches in Scotland.

For further information, including a list of places of worship for various religious denominations, please refer to the Chaplaincy web pages.

13 June is the start of Refugee Festival Scotland.

Funded by the University, the Glasgow Refugee, Asylum and Migration Network (GRAMNet) brings together researchers and practitioners, NGOs and policy makers working with migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Scotland. GRAMNet is an internationally recognised research network which promotes knowledge exchange and capacity building and encourages interdisciplinary research in this area.

The University recognises the difficulties refugees and asylum seekers face and endeavours to support asylum seekers and those with refugee status within the University community. The reasons for seeking asylum are likely to include reasons relating to one or more of the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. As such the University has created the role of Refugee Champion. This is currently Professor John Briggs.

Although the University is rooted in Glasgow, we enjoy a global reputation. Each year we welcome more than 4,800 international students from over 135 different countries, representing 16% of our total student numbers. Over the last three years our international student population has increased more than any other university in Scotland.

As well as increasing our international community here in Glasgow and Dumfries, we also have teaching hubs for undergraduates in Chengdu, China, and in Singapore; this year we will become the first UK university to open a Joint Graduate School in partnership with a Chinese university on Chinese soil – at Nankai University in Tianjin.

October brings Black History Month and World Mental Health Day (10th) as well as the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival. Good mental health maximises staff and students’ abilities to develop their academic, professional and/or social relationships. Providing support to those who need it will enable them to achieve their full potential.

Counselling & Psychological Services offers a confidential space for students to explore and reflect on issues affecting them without being judged and to help develop ways of overcoming concerns.

University staff seeking support can access Counselling & Psychological Service’s Mental Wellbeing drop-in sessions or through the free, independent and confidential Employee Assistance Programme which offers support, expert advice, invaluable information and specialist counselling. For more information on this, see the Staff Counselling webpages.

3 December is the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The University is committed to promoting disability equality and to providing an inclusive environment. To support this we provide a wide range of specialist support, provision and guidance for disabled staff and students.

We welcomed the opportunity to work with DisabledGo to provide accurate and practical information on the accessibility of our physical estate, thus allowing access to this important information in an accessible format. This enables disabled people to make informed choices, particularly before visiting or applying to study or work here.

For advice and support on student disability issues contact the Disability Service. For advice on staff disability issues, contact the Occupational Health Unit.
