Communication
Conflict is… A mental struggle that arises from the
simultaneous operations of opposing impulses, and drives external or internal demands.
An expression of differences forcing us to recognize that diversity and difference are essential characteristics common to all human experience.
Not always a bad thing- It can lead to the birth of new ideas or bring different people together as they try to find a solution. However some conflict is destructive and violent.
Ambiguity - the greatest stimulus for misunderstanding, lack of clarity, and conflict responses.
Circumstances of Ambiguity
Know what you want to say – think before you speak.
Check for clarification – never assume you’ve been understood.
LISTEN!! -
Hey John,I am writing to inform you that I will be absent from today's department meeting. My daughter has come down with the flu and I will be attending to her. I know that this is last minute, but I know that everyone understands my situation.
Thanks Again,Jane Smith
Dear Jane,Ok here is the deal. We are very upset that you are going to be missing our department meeting today. Our department has decided to delegate your duties to one of your co-workers, since you have missed another meeting. We also feel that you are more of a detriment to our department than a benefit because you are single mother. All of your ideas seem to be child-like; we think this may be because of all that time you spend with your daughter. I suggest that you either jump on board with us, or you will be an unemployed single mother.
John Cook
John,Well I feel that you don't understand my situation because the department is filled with egocentric males. What would you guys know about raising a child? I will be asking the CEO to place me in another department in the company.
Jane Smith
Think before you speak!!
