“This is the best news to come to Waipu for a while,” said Richie Guy, Chairman of the Joint Venture group working on fund raising for the Waipu Celtic Barn and the Coronation Hall upgrade. He was talking about a $600,000 grant for the project from the Whangarei District Council which was decided at an extraordinary Council meeting held last week to consider submissions on the Council’s Long Term Plan (LTP). The money will be granted in Year 2 of the Council’s Long Term Plan, which begins in July 2012. The grant is subject to the Joint Venture group being able to raise sufficient funds to complete the project – a sum of approximately $1.4 million. The fund currently has $120,000, comprising a $70,000 contribution from the Caledonian Society and a $30,000 contribution from the Coronation Hall Committee. The target amount includes a $410,000 refurbishment of the Coronation Hall. Richie says a decision was made to keep the old hall and upgrade it as it serves the community well and with its main hall and smaller back room is configured in such a way that a number of groups can use it at the same time. “If there is a group of just 20 people they don’t want to be sitting in a big space.” The proposed new Celtic Barn would seat around 370 people to a dinner or up to 700 people for a show

I was at a disco dance party for five year olds, a dozen or so little super heroes in cloaks and masks and several pink princesses giggling around to music amongst the juggling lights of a disco ball, when my iphone chirped. It was Wai Mason of SeaChange Café phoning to tell me there was a great big sea lion sitting on Ruakaka Beach. He must have known this was the only part of Bream Bay where he wasn’t in danger of being run over by a four - wheel drive. Out in the bay there had been an orca circling. Maybe this was why the sea lion had come ashore. I was 200 kilometres in Cornwallis on the Manukau Harbour so I couldn’t get to the beach to see the sea lion but if anyone took a photo I would like to publish this in the next issue. Before humans arrived on the scene sea lions were apparently common on this coastline. Now we just get a visit now and then. Department of Conservation advice is to keep your distance and to make sure the sea lion doesn’t get attacked or frightened by dogs. I was amazed to see how many people turned up to the meeting on Friday 25 May to hear about mining jobs in Australia. I have never seen so many cars in Ruakaka. The meeting had to be moved to the Bream Bay College auditorium because there just wasn’t enough space at the Bream Bay Community Trust for the 1500 people who attended. The Bream Bay College Ball was held on the same evening and there was poignancy in the two events side by side. Here were all these bright young people full of hopes for the future. I understand the plan is for people to fly back and forward between western Australia and Northland. Even so, it is a shame that there aren’t enough paying jobs here for New Zealanders to work for New Zealand or Northlanders to work for Northland. In a telephone conversation with Richie Guy (who was
made an Officer of the Order of New Zealand in the Queens Birthday honours list) I told him I found it a bit depressing that so many people couldn’t find work here and were planning to head to Australia. “It’s no good getting depressed about it. We have to do something to make these people want to stay here,” he replied. I think he is right. Too many people in the older generation just disengage and get on with what they see as a well - earned retirement. But older heads are needed to help get things moving in Northland. Richie Guy is now using his experience, connections and mana to work for a new events venue in Waipu and with a bit of luck and the almost guaranteed support of the wonderful Waipu community he will see this project through.Hopefully, the Celtic Barn and all the wonderful events that will be held there will generate excitement, creativity and perhaps a few new jobs.

Unloading parts for Marsden A
The Australia Star berthed at the Marsden Point Wharf on 28 December, 1966 to unload two heavy pieces of equipment - a 145 ton stator and a 120 ton transformer for the Marsden A power station. At the time, the Aus-tralia Star (10,021 tons gross, built in 1965 at Sunderland and owned by Blue Star Line Ltd, UK) was fitted with the largest heavy lift derrick on any ship in the world. It could lift 300 tons. This contrasts with the present ves-sel, Happy Rover, loading Marsden B equipment for shipment to India, which is fitted with 2, 400 ton derricks. Operating in tandem, they can lift 800 tonnes. The Australia Star made a second visit to Whangarei Harbour on 8 July 1967, when she unloaded a second 120 ton transformer at Marsden Point for Marsden A before shifting up to Port Whangarei where she discharged equipment for the Portland Cement Works. The Marsden A plant is currently being dismantled.

I was wondering if you could help me?. Last week after 35 years I went and visited Ruakanohi Street and all the houses were gone. The council still maintain the footpaths and it certainly looks like nature has won it back. Just wanted to know if anyone could tell me why they cleared the houses. We had migrated from Holland and resided there in 1977, as a 7 year old, my family and I had some of the best memories in Ruakaka. We left late ‘79 to Bris-bane, Australia and have stayed here ever since. My father had worked at the oil refinery. I do remem-ber once an Oil Tanker had washed up on shore which was an awesome sight from what I remember. The street was alive back then with families and that unmistakeable community spirit .... searching for pip-pis, fishing off the coastline, catching snapper,.run-ning through the dunes.... hanging out with our Maori neighbours...wow I missed those days. I went to One Tree Point School ... a teacher there named Mr Knight (he may even have been Aussie?) introduced a great swimming program... I almost drowned on that beach, saved by my sister pushing me onto a wave and she herself saved by a surfer. Anyway, be great if anyone could let me know how it all panned out for the residence of Ruakanohi Street. Hubert StookBrisbane
What happened to Ruakanohi St?
As one of many locals that walk my dogs up the ex-tension of Cullen Road, I am finding animal carcasses dumped on a weekly basis. Mostly these are of slaugh-tered pigs and sheep, some remains are left hanging in trees or over flowing from plastic rubbish bags, dumped just off the gravel with no effort to disguise, stinking to high heaven, obviously to attract more pigs to the area. This morning (1.6.12) I was shocked to find a beauti-ful purebred adult female German Shepherd dog, dead, dumped. The dog appears as though she may have been pregnant, I did not care to investigate exactly how she had died, but I could see no obvious sign of injury. It is not the first time I have come across this grizzly find. I understand offal is not permitted to be dumped in council refuse stations, so these low lives dump the re-mains anywhere they can without a second thought.I have also come across household rubbish, TV’s, com-puters, various furniture items dumped at the extension of Artillery Road opposite the repeater station, the most recent find being 28.5.12.I would like to ask the public to keep an eye out for sus-picious behavior, noting vehicle registrations, commu-nicate these to the police and spread the word locally when you find illegal dumping, to help us protect these beautiful areas to be enjoyed by everyone.

Bream Bay College students held their Annual After Ball function at the Ruakaka Recreation Centre. We would like to congratulate them on their excellent or-ganisation, the behaviour of the students and the effi-cient way they cleaned up the following morning [not easy after a 4am. finish!]. They entered into an agreement of understanding with about 10 important points that needed to be ‘obeyed’ for the function to go ahead. Probably the most impor-tant for us was the no alcohol requirement. Three out of five of the Ruakaka Recreation Centre Committee are teetotallers, so you can imagine we were very pleased this point was not abused. The police and the security firm were also full of praise – so, well done College Seniors!Making agreements/contracts with the Centre and car-rying them out is important for the smooth running of the Centre. Some groups give us their requirements at the beginning of the year and pay an annual fee to book in the dates. They also sign Contracts about their re-sponsibilities and the Centre’s. Some people have the strange idea they have rights over these booked groups. Unless we had weeks of warning to ask a booked group if they wanted to give up their dates, we would not be presumptive and ask them. Other people make book-ings and cancel at the last moment without telling you. From now on we will be asking for a deposit. Lastly, thanks to the Bream Bay News in helping to spread the good word about our new gym. People are taking the health message about winter fitness to heart- literally and figuratively. We are battling with a tag key system that is not really suited to the needs of the com-munity and are trying to change it [-from Wellington, a bit difficult]. If you are a new user the electronics usu-ally behave but because there are so many old, inactive and multiple –user keys out there in the community, tangles can happen. It takes about 10 minutes to write receipts, categorise the money into bags [so we know where our income is coming from], and then put the key through the electronic system. We are here 9-12pm weekdays [or from 7am if necessary, or make an ap-pointment.] May you benefit from all that increased oxygen in your blood. And, may the Juniors follow the example set by the Seniors – have fun without alco-hol!
Well done Bream Bay College seniors

Those houses were put there on a temporary basis to house people during the building of Marsden B mainly. There was also a doctor’s rooms, where we now have
the church. There was even a small library building and a Post Office. The street running parallel to Karawai St. still has the concrete driveways that went to each house’s garage. These houses were a better quality than those towards Peter Snell Rd and were probably for the middle management folk. They were removed when Marsden B and the Refinery expansion were finished

depending on how big the stage needs to be. It will have a moveable stage so that shows like the Art and Tartan Awards which need a cat walk can be accommodated. Piper Bain McGregor is looking forward to using the barn for pipe band concerts and Ceilidhs or dances and Paul Ramsay, Principal of Waipu Primary, said the school would definitely use the new Celtic Barn.“When we have shows or end of year assemblies everyone is packed into the Coronation Hall like sardines. We would prefer to have a hall here in the school grounds but that is not going to happen any time soon.”Last year tickets to two Art in Tartan shows in the Coronation Hall sold out in half an hour. Richie said in the Celtic Barn would enable many more people to see this show. “If you have the facilities the opportunities are tremendous,” he said. He finds it “tragic” that so many local young people are heading overseas to look for work. “It’s no good getting depressed about it. We need to create opportunities and the environment here so that people don’t want to go to Australia.” In a report on the proposal Council staff raised some concerns about the grant saying that the “viability of running such a facility is of some concern” and that the new venue would “reduce the utilisation of existing facilities such as Bream Bay College, Forum North and the Northland Events Centre.”However the report noted that the Waipu Community owns and administers a number of facilities, which in other areas are owned by the Council and that “there would be benefit to Council in supporting this funding request as Council funding would be considerably lower than if we were the sole funder of facilities of this nature that we believe are required.”Richie commented that halls are never profitable ventures and are always built and administered by non- profit making organizations. “If they were profitable they would be built by private enterprise.”
Money has gone back into the Whangarei District Council’s rural road sealing budget. There will be $600,000 a year for the next ten years for new seal on some of the district’s rural roads. This will only be enough to seal two and a half to three kilometres of road a year but at “least its something”, said Councillor Shelley Deeming when she gave this news to the Ruakaka Residents and Ratepayers Annual General Meeting on Tuesday night In the draft Long Term Plan the Council proposed to spend nothing on new seal as a Government subsidy which previously paid for 60% of all new seal has been withdrawn. However a number of rural residents as well as both the Ruakaka and Waipu ratepayer groups submitted that the Council should at least spend as much money as it has in recent past years on its road sealing programme.
Some good news for Waipu

You had to walk the plank to get inside at this year’s Waipu College senior school ball. The hall was decked out in a pirate theme with a skeleton borrowed from the biology department eerily lit from behind, the bow of a shipwrecked dingy and other piratical paraphernalia. Teachers with cutlasses and pistols tucked into their belts waited inside the hall for the students to arrive. Despite over a thousand additional people arriving at the school on the same evening to attend a meeting in the gymnasium inviting people to put their names forward for work in the Australian mines, the ball went smoothly, police posted at the hall entrance reported no incidents and the after ball function organised by
students in the Ruakaka Recreation Centre has won the praise of the Recreation Centre committee for careful its planning, ban on alcohol and the conduct of the students.

Ken Rivers, CEO of Refining NZ spoke, probably for the last time, at the Ruakaka Residents and Ratepayers Annual General. After five years in the top job at the Marsden Point oil refinery, Mr. Rivers is returning to the United Kingdom in August. He told the meeting, “A lot of people think that business exists to make money for folk but that’s only about a quarter of the story.” “We are here for New Zealand. Our business is to provide oil products for New Zealand’s needs.” “Fifty-one years ago News Zealand was concerned about the robustness of its oil supplies and concerned about the cost of that oil. In the mid 80s there was a big expansion at the refinery because those concerns were still there. He said these concerns still exist today and were the reason for the next big expansion the construction of a Continuous Catalyst Regeneration Platformer (CCR) to replace the current Platformer built in the 1960s. Mr. Rivers said, “Fifty percent of NZ energy demand comes from oil and 80% of this country’s oil supply comes from Marsden Point. Forty percent of New
Zealand’s total energy supply comes from Marsden Point. The Marsden Point Refinery is one of the most strategic assets this country has.” The refinery provides 50% of NZ’s petrol (to increase to 65% after the upgrade), 80% of its diesel, 100% of its jet fuel. If you don’t drive cars or ride in buses or planes but travel everywhere by bicycle, we supply 705 of NZ’s bitumen and if you don’t ride a bike but just tramp everywhere we supply the fizz in the soft drinks you might use to refresh yourself with if you get thirsty.” Mr Rivers said, from the viewpoint of many environmentalists, someone who runs an oil refinery is Mr Evil but he argues, “We are going to need these products until something else comes along. In the mean -time we are producing these products with as low an environmental footprint as you will get anywhere else, so you may as well buy these products from us.” The $365 million upgraded voted for by a 64% majority of the company’s shareholders in February would save 120 thousand tonnes of CO2 going into the atmosphere every year.“It is one of the biggest climate change projects in this country at present”, Mr. Rivers told his Ruakaka audience. Beginning in the second half of 2013 the project is expected to employ 300 people over three years and to create an additional 300 jobs indirectly. “We will be employing talented people in Northland who haven’t got a job. A lot of the engineering companies are having a hard time at present, so this will help to bridge the gap for them until development starts up again,” Mr. Rivers said. Asked about where all these people are going to live he said that many of them were already living in the Whangarei district. “A lot of Northlanders who have gone to Australia will be coming back. Some of the guys who worked on our Point Forward programme two years ago will be coming back from Australia. Many of these people still have houses here.” He said the work has been staged over three or four years to make it worthwhile for tradesmen to return to
the district. Asked how many extra permanent jobs the upgrade would provide, Mr. Rivers said this was somewhere between 6 and 10. Warren Daniels asked if the refinery would need to gain resource consents for the project. But Mr. Rivers said most of these are already in place. The 1980s upgrade gained some concessions for the Ruakaka community. For example the refinery funded the upper storey of the Ruakaka Recreation Centre during this time. However, as the CCR upgrade will reduce the refinery’s emissions Spencer Cummings asked about the safety of the refinery. What would happen, for example, if Marsden Point were hit by a tsunami? Mr Rivers said that a tsunami at Marsden Point was almost impossible as Bream Head and various off shore islands protected it. Marsden Point had been chosen 50 years ago as the site for the oil refinery as it was close to the Auckland market, on a deep-water port and one of the areas of lowest seismic risk in News Zealand. He said the refinery’s most vulnerable aspect was the pipeline, which supplies fuel to Auckland. As Auckland is predicted to grow to over two million by 2031, the pipeline would soon be too small to supply the city. A good alternative would be to send fuel supplies to Auckland by rail and for this reason the refining company was a strong advocate for building the Marsden Point rail link. Mr. Rivers said the location of New Zealand’s only refinery at Marsden Point had advantages for Northland. “When their fuel supplies are affected it really makes Aucklanders sit up and listen.” He gave as an example the current Transpower project laying new cable between Albany and Pakuranga, which will help to secure Northland’s electricity supply. Mr. Rivers said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time in Northland and hoped to retain links with this part of the world. Councillor Phil Halse said that Mr. Rivers had played an important role in business leadership forums during his time in Northland.

Housing New Zealand has sold two of its rental properties in the Ruakaka Village and may sell off more properties as houses become vacant. Marie Winfield, a media advisor with Housing NZ, said the sale was due to “low demand in the area.” She said, “This is business as usual. Nationally we sell houses in areas of low demand to help fund the acquisition and improvement of houses in areas where demand is high.” However village resident and Housing NZ tenant Violet Bazil said, “A lot of people inquired about those houses when they saw they were empty. Many people jump at the chance of a housing corporation house.” Chrissy McLoughlin of the Tai Tokerau Emergency Housing Trust said that in the past some of the people the trust has looked after have been able to move to Ruakaka into state houses. The emergency housing trust reports that it is struggling to cope with the amount of people needing somewhere safe to live in Whangarei. A recent report prepared on its behalf highlighted the plight of 20 people who were living in cars and caravans or had been asked to move on after out staying their welcome in the homes of family or friends. The number of Housing New Zealand properties in the Ruakaka Village now stands at 24.

This 10.28kg snapper won $500 and the SPI Fishing Competition trophy for Carl Shine of Oakleigh. The annual SPI fishing contest was held last weekend starting at 4pm on Friday 1 June with weigh in at the SPI building in Marsden Point Rd. at 2pm on Saturday 2 June. Carl said he caught his winning fish off “the old woman” - the reef out from Parua Bay.
Nathan Miller, went along with his mother Joanne to listen to the meeting in the Bream Bay College gymnasium on Friday 25 May.Nathan, who is 18 years old, has been looking for work for two years. He has a casual job working on the petrol pumps at a petrol station where he earns on average $150 a week. “At least it’s something and it’s better than him going on the dole”, says his mother Joanne. Nathan would like a full time customer service type of job. He wouldn’t mind a full time job at the petrol station but says nobody currently employed there is likely to leave, as everyone knows jobs are hard to come by.
A large portion of Nathan’s weekly wage goes on petrol to get to work and Joanne needs to provide substantial support for her son who still lives at home with her in Waipu. Nathan said he has applied for at least 50 jobs. He has even filled in on line application forms for jobs in Australia but says he has never heard back from any of these applications. He was disappointed after attending the Friday meeting that there were not actually any jobs on offer. Joanne and Nathan will be travelling to Australia for a family wedding next year and say they will be having a good look around to see if they can find work for Nathan.

Christine Dudley (better known as Chooky) spent 10 years in Australia, returning to New Zealand in 2010. She had a job with the finance department in a big engineering company based in Sydney. The company grew by threefold over those ten years and Chooky had an exciting time travelling to Singapore and other countries the company was working in. She returned to New Zealand to be near her family after the death of her father. “It was time for me to come back.” Chooky says by comparison with Australia, New Zealand has just a few people in the top wage bracket and a big pool of people just making ends meet in the middle. She thinks there are great opportunities for young people in Australia but she advises them to have a job lined up before they leave New Zealand or at least some good contacts with people who can help them find work. “Often its not what you know but who you know.”While living in Sydney she saw many New Zealanders arrive in Australia with high hopes who were forced to return home disillusioned. “They come across and stay with family or friends but they can’t get the dole and living costs chew through their savings pretty quickly. Their families get tired of sending them money and they have to go home.”
He can’t find a job so is thinking of moving to Australia

Start putting aside books, DVDs, games and CDs for a giant book sale to be held in the Waipu Coronation Hall on 19th and 20th October. Neil McLeod, of the hall committee, said he has been thinking about holding such a fair for a long time. He said over the last 10 years the hall committee has spent $78,863 in repairs and upgrades. Some of this comes from Council grants but fundraising is always needed.

The march towards the semi finals continued at Cal-edonian Park on the weekend with another domi-nating performance, putting away a plucky City team 78-3. Despite the one - sided score line City had good periods during the game and tested our de-fence on several occasions. As predicted they had some hefty forwards who used there bulk well in the set pieces.Waipu don’t have a game this weekend (bye) which is a bit of a blow as we need to maintain our posi-tive momentum. Our game against Mangakahia at home on the 9th June is the first in a string of three must win matches if we want to secure the coveted

After Mangakahia we are away to the difficult and often troublesome Onerahi team, and then the round 9 match up against the so far undefeated Southern side from Te Kopuru will determine which team earns the top spot.Stand out players from Saturdays game include Nath-an Jones at hooker and Sean McCully who took over at loose head for the honeymooning Carl Hansen. Solid engine room games from Nathan Jacobe and Anthony (AJ) Rogers kept the forwards rolling. In the backs Gilbert Costello scored twice while Darcy Gilbert showed pace and skill on the wing to score 3 tries.

& GENERAL REPAIRS An additional 2500 native trees will be planted at Uretiti this year as part of the Living Legends project, which began last year in conjunction with the Rugby World Cup. This year’s public planting day will be Saturday August 4, starting at 9am. School groups will be invited to get some of the trees in prior to this date and the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust hopes to hold a low key planting day prior to the main event .Last year 5000 trees were planted at the entrance to the Uretiti camping ground at two public plantings days, the second of these in conjunction with the rugby World Cup in September. Over the summer Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust volunteers mulched the trees with sawdust donated by Northsawn Lumber and Department of Conservation staff watered them over a short dry spell early in the season. These efforts together with the wet summer insured a good survival rate and this year’s planting will go along a newly formed trail up to a lookout point on a hill south of the Uretiti campground entrance. Living Legends is a joint venture of Project Crimson and the Tindall Foundation. The Department of Conservation and Meridian Energy are major sponsors. The Uretiti planting is one of 17 such projects around New Zealand. Each planting is dedicated to a regional rugby legend and the Uretiti planting is named for Richie Guy of Waipu a former All Black, All Black manager and chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union Council. The project will continue for five years in total and will see 10 thousand trees planted at the site.

Ceremony to mark the beginning of work on the Ruakaka South sewer scheme
“It’s one thing to come up with an idea but it takes a lot of work to see projects through to completion”, Deputy Mayor Phil Halse told those gathered at the dawn ceremony held on Friday 1 Juen to mark the start of the physical work of the Ruakaka south sewer scheme.“People think you just need to fill in forms to get grants but believe you me, it takes a bit more than that”, he said referring to the $6.8million Health Department contribution to the $12 million project. Paraire Pirihi or Patuharakeke prayed for the success of the project and Warren Daniel, secretary of the Ruakaka Residents and Ratepayers Association and a long time campaigner for the scheme was invited to make the first ceremonial dig.

Olga Fernandez should be employed by Kaipara’s kumara growers to market their produce. She is an avid believer and advocate for the health benefits of the knobbly, red, root vegetable. Last weekend at the Waipu Saturday market she launched her new product – Kumara Delight. It’s a sweet jelly made out of kumara and sugar with an option containing Ghana cocoa. She is experimenting with other flavours. Olga and her family moved to New Zealand from the Basque region of Spain two years ago. They have lived in Ruakaka for just six months. How did she come up with this idea and this product? Soon after moving to New Zealand her husband Carlos became ill.“It was terrible, he had no energy, bad headaches, pains in his stomach and he just stayed in bed a lot of the time. He was thinking maybe he had cancer but the doctors could find nothing wrong. In the end we were lucky to find a doctor who told us the problem was a gluten intolerance.”Olga began to research gluton free foods and found that kumara is a king amongst these. ‘It’s one of the most health giving vegetables you can eat. It is high in iron, potassium, and vitamin C and low in glycemic carbohydrates, which cause fluctuations in glucose and insulin levels in the blood. She also likes the fact it is locally grown. A food Olga was familiar with in Spain was quince jelly, and this is what her kumara delight resembles. It can be eaten with cheese and nuts. It took a lot of experimentation to get the texture and consistency just right. To comply with food hygiene requirements Olga cooks up her Kumara Delight in the commercial kitchen at the SeaChange restaurant. A marketing specialist, she has designed the packaging, business cards and a website: www.nanasdeli.co.nz Carlos, an accountant, has come up with a good business plan. The name Nana’s Deli is to incorporate other products they might come up with in the future. Olga has made special aprons for herself and five year old daughter Amaia to wear at markets. After the Waipu market she has booked stalls at a Parua Bay Market and a Puhoi Market. She will be at the Mangawhai market on 9 June and at the Waipu Sunday Market on 10 June. “It is going to be fun. We want this to be a real kiwi style family business.”

Fundraising to go to Las Vegas with a hip hop team
Maddie Rogers
Maddie Rogers of Ruakaka is part of a Northland based Hip Hop group that has qualified to compete at the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas in August. The nine members of the group known as The Future Crew need to each raise $2,600 for the trip. Maddie is a year 7 student at Bream Bay College and travels up to Whangarei three times a week to practice. “It’s a bit of a juggle for her parents,” says her mother Nicola. Maddie began learning hip hop when she was four years old. Nicola said she thought it would help her confidence. She had to audition to become a member of The Future Crew. To be good at hip hop “you need to have commitment and that special X factor – we don’t really know what it is,” said Nicola.Future Crew won a gold medal at a competition held earlier this year on the Australian Gold Coast and placed third at the New Zealand championships.
The Waipu Cove Surf Lifesaving Club has a new $10,500 canoe sponsored by the Oxford Trust. This amount covered the price of the canoe but not transport and paddles which cost another $2200 paid for by local sponsorship. The craft will be used for competition canoe racing. The club currently has three crews: a Masters, Under 19 men and Under 19 women and, with the new addition, has three canoes, although one is getting a bit old. Over the winter months on the last Sunday of each month canoe and IRB teams will be training alternatively at the Waipu and Ruakaka Surf life Saving Clubs from 12 – 2.pmThe next training will be Sunday June 24th at Waipu Cove from 12 noon to 2.00pm.The July training will be at Ruakaka. All canoe and IRB lifeguards and prospective lifeguards are welcome. Next March Waipu will host the National IRB competition, while in February
Ruakaka will host the Northern Regional Championships for over 14 year olds.
