RunoffsStorm water runoffs may seem like no big deal to some boaters, but it is critical to our ocean and our environment.

When you see the rule that says that there is to be no washing of vehicles or vessels in the parking lot, it is a huge deal. This may not look bad to you, but it does have serious affects on the ocean because the runoff water can have toxins such as oils, fuel, hull paints and chemicals that can kill animals outright, or can settle in their systems. Once in the water theses toxins ends up moving up the food chain, possibly to humans, in a process called bioaccumulation.

Sewage and detergents are also a problem because they have excessive nutrients that cause algal blooms. These then die and decay, consuming oxygen and causing fish to die.

Even little things such as throwing small pieces of litter, such as a cigarette filter of plastic pellet can look like food to many aquatic animals, and once ingested, the plastic can block the digestive tract, killing the animal.

You may find signs that are posted adjacent to parking lots to prohibit littering, dumping, and cleaning of vehicles or vessels, but there are other things that you and other boaters can do.

Note From CarolynLiving in this little special corner of the world where we do can’t be surpassed. It seems like we’ve had summer all winter long. We’ve certainly liked having so many more of you around the marina enjoying the great weather. With more people enjoying their boats it’s important to be mindful of your neighbors. When using dock carts, please be sure to return them to the head of the dock so they can be available for others. Also, please remember that some of your liveaboard neighbors call their boats home, so be mindful of noise in the evenings.

Since the real summer season is about to begin, it’s THAT TIME AGAIN TO BBQ - SO MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!

Our annual Customer Appreciation Barbeque is on Saturday, June 27th from 12:00 to 3:00. We look forward to this event each year, so please be sure to bring your family and join us for an afternoon of BBQ, music, camaraderie and the always coveted raffle prizes.

Your fellow CYM Boaters

As the weather warms we start seeing a lot of new faces around the Marina. Since we are a closed

access facility, we ask that you don’t hold the dock gate for someone unless you know for sure that they belong here. Anyone who belongs here at CYM should have an access key. If you’re not sure, ask who they are and what slip they are in. It’s a great way to meet your fellow CYM Boaters!

If they don’t have a key, they need to check in through the marina office, period. Vendors must check-in through the Marina Office and will be issued an id badge along with a dock key. So lets all be proactive this boating season!

Keep all hoses either in your dock box or on the boat. Also, coil your power cords on your boat and not on the dock or around the dock box. Anything left on the docks other than hoses and boarding steps can create a tripping hazard. Thanks for your efforts to keep our marina safe!

A Note From FrANk

Hello Chula Vista Boaters,

During a recent Port inspection, the inspection team commented about how clean and hazards free our docks and finger piers are. I’d like to thank all of our boaters for their continued efforts in keeping California Yacht Marina the cleanest marina in the Bay.

There are several dilapidated dinghies tied off to the docks that look abandoned. If one of them belong to you, please contact me. I’m going to start disposing of them if they aren’t claimed. The same with bicycles on the rack – I need to make sure that the bikes that are there now belong to current customers and aren’t abandoned.

If you have any ideas or suggestions as to something we could do here at CYM – Chula Vista to help enhance your boating experience please let me know.

Frank

Our St. Patrick’s Day celebration was a great success; most especially the

second annual “Gold Coin Toss” contest. The gold “coins” are feather light so tossing them into a green pot, one at a time, is a little like tossing feathers in the wind and hoping they land somewhere in the vicinity. Confusion reigned when a few enterprising tenants decided they might have more success tossing them all together instead of one at a time as intended. That actually worked, so we allowed everyone to toss however many they liked in the first round, but held them to the rules (one coin at a time) in the second round. Bruce Lombardi’s first round toss resulted in all 8 in the pot. Robert Rabe got 6 in the first round by tossing them all at once. The second round we changed the rules back to the original intent of one coin at a time. Definitely harder. The grand prize winner of the Galley Gift Certificate, with a total of 9 points, was Bruce Lombardi (helped along, of course, by his first round of all 8 in with one toss).

Although as in the famous quote of the queen of England in the first America’s

Cup, “there is no second place, your highness,” three people tied for second place with 6 points each: Emma Cornwell (Dan Cornwell’s daughter), Robert Rabe (also assisted by tossing coins all at once) and Paul Ingram who did it the honest way with 3 coins individually in each round. So if you’re practicing up for next year, be sure to practice one at a time.

St. Paddy’s Day Fun!!!

San Salvador Launch

If you’ve driven along Harbor Drive near Spanish Landing anytime recently, you’ve probably seen the replica of the San Salvador under construction. The San Salvador was the first ship to land on San Diego’s shores. In 1542 explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed the original San Salvador into what is now San Diego Bay.

After four years the time has come to launch the completed replica. The date had been scheduled for Sunday, April 19th beginning at 10:00. However, due to unforeseen technical difficulties in lifting and moving her, the launch will be delayed at least two weeks. When the launch is re-scheduled, she will be trucked from her birth place on Spanish Landing along Harbor Drive to the Maritime Museum where she will be launched and then towed to her permanent residence as the newest addition to San Diego’s Maritime Museum. It will be quite a piece of San Diego’s history. The best viewing will be from the Broadway Pier. At this writing the new launch date has not been established, but if you’re interested, please call the office and we’ll hopefully have a new schedule.
