As predicted, the summer has started with a bang with many of our mem-bers using the club facilities . That’s

great! It’s what we all signed up for . But, unfortunately, it also brings occasional misun-derstandings . So, in order to avoid as many misunderstandings or conflicts as possible it’s time to review some of the rules .

First, please note the rules are in the Membership Directory and Handbook that’s sent our every year to all members . There are no excuses for not knowing and obeying the rules . In this year’s handbook the rules begin on Page 68 . They define and emphasize the “purpose of the Club Rules is to encourage and support the enjoyment of the Club by its members, their families and guests .” This especially includes acting appropriately and courteously . While I don’t think this is usually a problem I do want to emphasize that we need to treat each other with respect .

Some of the rules that I see (or hear) are being broken include:

Guests not being accompanied by a mem-ber . Members must accompany their guests unless specific authorization from the Club Administrator is obtained . This includes adult children of members .

The use of glass containers in the pool and dock/marina area . Glass containers

are strictly prohibited in the pool area in our rules . Additionally, we are part of Comal County’s WORD (Water Oriented Recreation District) and their rules also discourage glass in and around the area’s rivers and lakes .

Pets that are not on leashes . Owners are required to “keep pets on a leash, under control and out of contact with other mem-bers and guests outside the pet friendly zone” which is the deck so designated next to the clubhouse . Pets are specifically not allowed in the clubhouse, in the pool area and on the McKown deck .

Fishing is allowed on the docks except in times of heavy traffic and walkways must always be kept open . All equipment and debris must be cleaned up before the fisher-men leave .

These are the most commonly observed infractions . There have been other isolated issues such as the young man riding on the roof of a car as they drove out of club grounds . When I asked them to stop they replied rudely and kept going . I was, unfortunately, unable to identify them or their car . And we also all need to review the safety regulations around the ramp including always using safety chains and no one riding in boats or on trailers as

Stephen and Sara Aultman . . .San Antonio, TXFred and Roberta Soward . Corpus Christi, TX

Welcome New Members

they move up and down the ramp or on the grounds .

Finally, it’s not always about the written rule . Sometimes it’s just common sense . For example, our pool and deck are relatively small and it’s important to share it responsibly . If you have a large group remember to make room for others to enjoy the area . And if your children or young adults are rambunctious it may be okay of no one else is using the pool but if there are others there, you may want to ask the kids to tone it down . Again, it’s courtesy and common sense and applies not only to the pool but all of the club grounds and docks .

So, take the time to review the rules . They are there to ensure that all of us can enjoy the Club . Also remember to treat everyone at the club – members, guests and our staff – with the same courtesy that you yourself expect .

I look forward to seeing you enjoying our Club this summer!

With a week and a half remaining (as of this writing) until the 2018 Leukemia Cup Regatta, LCYC has raised donations and commitments of over $30,000 for the South Central Texas Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which puts us well ahead of last year’s pace! The fundraising teams listed on the LCYC LCR webpage are driving the success of our fundraising efforts. It’s not too late to make a tax deductible donation. Just choose your favorite team and a link will take you to their webpage. We have signed up 10 sponsors who have collectively donated $11,100. So if you come across folks from CEMEX, Roeschmann Design, Mittel Cattle Company, McCracken and Carroll Wealth Management, Morgan Stanley, Intruder Alert Systems, J S Fine Wines, Broadway Bank, Glen Graham &Associates, and/or Peter E. Macler Associates, please give them a big, warm thank you! The Silent Auction is now up to 40 items including a week-long Moorings rental in the BVI on a 42’ keel boat! A few more

CHARLES L. BRANCH M.D. LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA

items would be greatly appreciated! Please call Lancine Justin or Ray Leubner if you have an item or service to donate.

The NOR is up and posted; 10 boats have registered so far. Only the PHRF Spinnaker and Non Spin B fleets have formed so far. More boats please....the more, the merrier!

Change: please note that the club will be providing the Saturday night dinner, salad, dessert and drinks. No need to bring anything this year. The galley crew says this is a far more efficient way to serve. A link to an RSVP form for the Saturday dinner is up on the LCR webpage and on the Constant Contact blast emails. Please RSVP so that we will have enough food – we would hate to run out. Remember to include your guests and crew. Adding to the fun is the LCR Silent Auction and live music from Larry Read.

June was a light month for our racing youth . Caleb Fogle competed at the TSA Circuit regatta at the Austin Yacht Club

the first weekend in June . He finished with a third-place score, including two 2nd-place finishes against the most competitive 4 .7 start-ing line on the circuit, so far . This was the Texas Laser Youth Championship and regional qualifier for the Smythe Trophy .

Due to the TSA regatta the same weekend, no youth sailors raced the club’s summer series in June . The next TSA regatta was at press time at Palacios Yacht Club on June 23 –24 followed by Race Week at Texas Corinthian Yacht Club on July 6-8 in Houston . Caleb will be once again racing in the Laser 4 .7 .

Over the Memorial Day weekend, we held a spinnaker and trapeze clinic . Caleb and Zach Zinn perfected their technique in the C420, and we look forward to them improving their abilities in upcoming races . If you’re looking for crew on your keel boats, let us know – these

Bylaws Revisions Renee Kizziar, Treasurer

Lake Canyon Yacht Club (“LCYC” or “the club”) operates under a set of Bylaws . These Bylaws are printed in the back of the Member Directory and are posted on the membership page of the club’s web site . The Bylaws provide a broad framework for the club .

Revisions to Bylaws can only be made by a membership vote . Often these votes are accom-plished in connection with the LCYC Annual Meeting because the Annual Meeting always already involves the election of Board of Governors (“BOG”) members and a Vice Commodore .

The LCYC BOG has identified some Bylaws revisions that will be submitted to the member-ship for a vote in the course of the 2018 Annual Meeting . If you have a revision to suggest, please contact Renee Kizziar at treasurer@lcyc .net or 210-862-2952 . These suggestions will be reviewed with the BOG and with those submitting the recommendations .

Thank you for your interest in your club .

goes to Elizabeth and Craig Uberroth for donating a refrigerator to replace the pan-try fridge that died, and to Mike Samulin for donating an additional upright freezer . When you’re feeding 150 people, storage is important!

Independence Day is almost here and the club will be celebrating with a distance race at 10:00 am followed by a traditional cook-out . Stacy & Steve Wilson, Jack Mogab and LaDonna Bacon will serve hotdogs and burgers from 1:30 to 2:30 pm . Club members with last names A-M, bring a dessert; last names N-Z, a salad or side, please .

Below is a peek at upcoming events . Although we have the host slots filled, we still need volunteers to help with the setup, prep, serving and clean-up, so don’t hesitate to offer your services by emailing PortCaptain@LCYC .

Summer fun is here, and thanks to our volunteers who are generous with their time and abilities, our club is enjoy-

ing social activities to take advantage of the weather . On Saturday, June 9, Lonna and Joe O’Brien and Carolyn Harris hosted 150 members and guests for our annual “Summer Breeze” party featuring cheeseburgers with all the fixings – chips and dip, salads, desserts and plenty of hydration options . Music by “Read & Lava” got the dance floor hopping to oldies but goodies . New this year was a booth with Margaritaville props and enthusiastic island wannabes posing for the photos . Our thanks to Adult Sail Training attendee Jim Meyer, owner of Boothologie, for providing the photos at cost .

The Commodore’s breakfast for Father’s Day, led by Sherry and Bob Willis and the “Over the Hill Krewe”, was a delicious buf-fet of breakfast casseroles, sausage, biscuits and gravy, fruit salad and Bloody Marys . Our “dependable two-some”, Sue Radley and Mary Lindsey, arrived early to assist with the prepara-tion and serving . Seventy club members sure appreciated the spread .

Thank you to all who attended these activi-ties and for RSVP-ing! Your responses (when required) are helping tremendously in planning for these fun events . And much appreciation

net . Thanks to those of you who have already come forward and to those who will assist in the future . It’s a great way to meet folks and learn more about the club . We invite you to participate whenever you can .

Are you a new – or newish – member? Volunteering at our social events gets you into the thick of things and gives you an opportu-nity to meet and network with other members . Please consider volunteering! Just let us know and we’ll find a spot for you to help our hosts who have already generously volunteered for future events .

See you on the water or in the galley!

The Father's Day Breakfast was hosted by the Over the Hill Krewe, AKA sailors who were formerly HCYC

members but came over the "hill" (there's a hill?) to LCYC. In addition to a yummy Southwestern Egg Casserole, sausage, biscuits and gravy and fresh fruit, each table had an assorment of nautical "cookeze" made by Shelly Talamantez.

The July breakfast will be hosted by Leslie Heath and crew. I've already had a sneak peek at the menu and it is mouthwatering!

Summer Series Racing Chris Powers and Rick Mella

Saturday, June 9th, Summer Series Keelboat regatta got underway with the one time Skipper’s meeting covering the

3-month sailing event attended by 16 entries . The weather forecast of winds ranging from 9 – 13 mph, out of the Southeast with mostly sunny skies appeared to be another wonder-ful start for six J-22s, three PHRF Spin, two Multi-hull and five PHRF Non-Spin skippers .

With two races scheduled for each Summer months, the Six-Minute horn sounded at 12:59pm, beginning Race 1, with the J-22s racing under Pendant class #1, PHRF Spin & Multi-Hulls started at 1:10pm, under Pendant class #2, and PHRF Non-Spin started with Pendant class #3, at 1:15pm . At the start, Winds were 7-9mph, with the windward mark position at 180 degrees, 0 .8 miles from the Race Committee boat . After six legs (W3) for class 1 & 2 fleets, and 4 legs (W2) for class 3, the final boat crossing the finish line at time 2:40pm for race one, with winds dropping to less than 3mph, and switching directions to the East . A ten minute Race Postponement was signaled to allow Race Committee time to realign the race course and shorting the race to two legs (W) .

The second race got underway at 2:56pm, with the last skipper floating through the finish

line at 3:50pm . With the help of volunteers Chuck Begley & Marissa Avila, calling finish places and scribing finishing times, the follow-ing finishes were recorded for Summer Series RACE 1 & RACE 2:

The June Boardboat series was moved up a week to remove a conflict with Flying Scot North Americans in Dallas . Special thanks to those who were flexible with their schedules

despite not being involved in FS NACs, as well as PRO Fred Lindsey and his crew, who needed to invest a lot of time to get three races in . After a postponement at the dock in heavy heat, Fred was eventually able to send the boardboats out to race in a decent breeze from the Southwest . That wind eventually died as the first race was finishing, resulting in another postponement and a total re-set of the course

when the wind filled in nicely from the East . The second and third races were in very nice conditions, albeit much later in the day than anyone planned for . All were hot and tired by the end of the day, but Fred did a great job to get three races in . New LCYC member Fred Soward won all three Flying Scot races, with Jeff Foerster in second in all three . Chris Besch won all three Sunfish races, with Allen Borden and Harold Simmons splitting the seconds . Craig Barleme won all three Portsmouth races,

with Joe McDonough taking second in the two races he completed .

Our annual Memorial Day cel-ebration brought great sailing after an outstanding fish fry lunch . Fred Lindsey managed the pursuit start in awkwardly variable conditions . Several boats found good wind heading toward the dam up the near shore, while those who headed to the middle of the lake fell behind quickly . The wind even-tually filled in more and the fleet had

pleasant racing conditions until the end, with Gustavo Medellin taking the Spinnaker win in Canyon Wind (with Fred Lindsey in second and Debora Fogle in third) . Marty Chrisman and Mai Hai won the non-spinnaker fleet, with Dwight Stickle in second .

LCYC was well represented at Flying Scot NACs, sending four boats (Keith Zars, Jeff Foerster, myself, and Bill McVey) . The regatta

continued....

PRO (Mark Foster) is also a member at LCYC, and he did an outstanding job . Jeff and I both missed qualifying for Championship Fleet by one point, and Keith qualified . Keith's results in the very difficult Championship Fleet were consistently mid-fleet, finishing 16th of 26

overall . Jeff and I both put up more variable results, with him winning the final race to finish 6th of 26 in Challenger while I put up a 2 in the first race (and an 18 later) to finish 10th in Challenger . It was an excellent event and we were happy to be representing LCYC .

Upcoming events for which registration is open include Leukemia Cup, the July 4 Distance Race, and the July series races . A Moonlight Race is also planned for July 28, for which registration will open soon
