The Lourens River runs through the farm and Peter Ford, chairperson of the Helderberg Residents’ Action Association, is concerned that further development on the banks of the river will compound the type of flooding expe- rienced in August and again in November this year. The developers, Combined Developers, pro- pose to leave a 45 m green belt from the centre of the river as a buffer, but Ford says the flood plain has to be approached with caution.“Our rivers have to be cherished, especially the Lourens River, because of its heritage status.” Ford’s other concern is the added traffic to Gordon Road, “...especially with a school of that size”. Possiblemultiyear

    tenders for Lights Festival

    DALEEN FOUCH

    Several possibilities to improve

    the popular Somerset West

    Lights Festival next year were

    discussed at ameeting on Thurs-

    day 12 December.

    The meeting, between Stuart

    Pringle, chairperson of subcoun-

cil 8 and officials from the City

of Cape Town, was the result of

    the growing concern about the

    quality of the Lights Festival.

    The DistictMail reported last

    week thatmany locals feel recent

    festivalsaredull compared to the

    extravagant events of the past

(Lights do not shine that bright-

ly in Somerset West any more,

    DistrictMail, 12 December 2013).

    According toPringle the possi-

bility of a multi-year tender as

well as the involvement of pri-

    vate institutions and allowing

    themtosponsorChristmaslights

    were discussed.

    Pringle says a multi-year ten-

    der would enable contractors

    whowin the tender to havemore

time to plan and promote the fes-

    tival.

    He says currently, the contrac-

tor only has about a month to

    plan the festival.

    Pringle says the meeting was

    positiveandtheideaswellmet.

He said an alternative to a pos-

    sible multi-year tender, is to

    award the tendermuchearlier in

the year, ahead of the budgeting

process to allow for better plan-

    ning. Apart from these propos-

als, the City is drafting guide-

    lines for involvement with com-

    munity initiatives and events,

    such as the Lights Festival,

    which will also stipulate which

    departments are responsible for

    which activities.

    Pringle says the proposals will

    nowbeconsidered for implemen-

    tation.

    I urge all contractors who

wish to tender for the festival to

    have their paperwork ready,

    says Pringle.

vang het om hul staatstoelae te laat

    Safety tips for theoutdoors

    Theholiday seasonhas arrived, andwith

    it, endless outdoor fun.

During this time crowds of people flock to

beaches and engage in activities like hiking,

    fishingandswimming.However, it isalso the

time when holidaymakers tend to lose their

    sense of caution.

    According toNigel Pepperell,National Sea

    RescueInstitute(NSRI)Station9commander

at Gordons Bay, beach-goers should only

swim at beaches where there are life guards

on duty (look for the big red-and-yellow flag)

and in demarcated areas. Always obey the

life guards, and make sure to keep an eye on

your children when at the beach.

Pepperell also suggests that when fishing,

from a boat, you should always ensure that

someone knows precisely where you are at

all times and that the craft has the proper

    safety equipment.

A special note for visiting anglers fishing

between Gordons Bay and Rooi Els:

The sea in that area is very dangerous, due

to the interaction between the cliffs and the

open ocean. This frequently results in ex-

tremely high waves, even on a seemingly

calm day. As a result anglers, are washed off

the rocks, often with fatal consequences.

Remember: If you find yourself in trouble

in the water, try to remain calm. Stick your

arm (preferably both!) in the air and wave,

make your movements as big and clear as

possible. This is an internationally recog-

nised distress signal and is guaranteed to

    spur lifeguards into action.

In the event of an emergency, call 021 449

    3500,whichisouremergency24hourcallcen-

tre. The emergency number is displayed at

    all main beaches.

Keen hikers are implored to follow these

simple tips provided by The Mountain Club

of SA, Hottentots Holland section to ensure

    their safety:

    Prepare thoroughly Do your home

    workbeforeyouset foot onanewpath.Check

a map (how long is the hike, where are the

inclines, water points, shade, etc.), check

your gear, assess your own and other hikers

fitness levels, and be realistic if you are able

    to do it.

Always tell someone where you are go-

ing andwhen you intend to return, and stick

to what you told that person.

Always carry a jacket, hat and sun-

screen, nomatter what the weather forecast.

Leave the flip flops at home andwear the

right shoes. At least wear tekkies (trainers),

but best are hiking boots with a sturdy sole

    and ankle support.

Carry enough water. For a day in the

mountains, youwill need two litres of water.

Keep a fully charged cell-phone with the

    numberforMetroControl (0219370300)saved

on it with you. There are many areas that

dont have cell-phone reception, but still,

have it with you because if you have recep-

tion, it can potentially save your life and

make our job a lot easier. If you have one of

those fancy smart phones with built-in GPS,

find out how to transmit your position to

    somebody else.

Donot deviate from the initial plans that

    were made.

Never hike alone. A party of four is the

minimum recommended group size. If one

gets injured, the others can render some as-

    sistance and find help.

Father and son drown at P Bay

A father and son from Mitchells Plain

drowned at Pringle Bay on Saturday.

    According to Craig Lambanon, spokes-

person for the NSRI , their Gordons Bay

sea rescue volunteers were informed that

the men had been swept out to sea near

the Hangklip Hotel at about 09:27.

Lambanon said NSRI crews, joined by

    the Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

and the police, responded to the call.

On arrival on the scene it was con-

firmed that a young man from Mitchells

    Plainhadalertedbystandersat 09:02 toget

    assistanceafterhis fatherandhisgrandfa-

    the,also fromMitchellsPlain,wereswept

Lambanon added that the men were

caught in rip currents andwere swept out

    to sea.

The bodies of both men were recovered

about 400 meters off-shore. They were de-

clared dead on the scene. Police have

    opened an inquest docket.

    stick together

This year was for many Helderberg

residents one of the most dramatic

    and eventful in years.

    We experienced extreme shifts in

    weather, unprecedenteddownpours

of rain, heavy snow falls, flooding

    and devastating fires.

    The summer was exceptionally

hot and long and the south easter

    was relentless.

When winter did finally arrive it

was later than usual, but it struck

    with a vengeance.

It was one of the coldest, wetest

    winters ever experienced in theHel-

    derberg.

Then just when we thought the

rain and winter weather was over

we had a downpour mid November

    which flooded MediClinic Hospital,

    businesses, homes and streets.

    Helderberg residents not only en-

dured all of this they stuck together

    and helped each other out.

    This was especially evident dur-

ing the floods last month and after

    the recent firewhichdestroyed elev-

en homes in Kays Caravan Park.

    During the floods strangers, using

    their own 4x4s, evacuated hospital

    patients and elderly residents to

    places of safety.

After the floods help was once

again on hand as Helderberg resi-

dents rolled up their sleeves to help

    mop up.

    Whenthe firedevastatedhomes in

    Kays Caravan Park strangers

opened their homes and hearts to

    people who had lost everything.

    These unselfish caring acts by

strangers are rarely seen these days

    Schuster

With reference to the letter you published,

Please dont give money to beggars at traffic

    please publish the following;

At 12:30 on Friday 22 November, I saw the

same very cripple guy with his bucket in

between the cars again. He came to my car,

    not his lucky day.

Almost falling, so very cripple, he said,

Please give a cripple man somemoney. To

which I replied, you almost had people col-

lide their cars the other daywith your stupid

cripple act. I saw you running away that day

as well as for your taxi every afternoon at

17:00. There is nothing wrong with your

    legs.

He suddenly stood up straight and said Im

acting like Leon Schuster, if the (swearing

terribly) wants to give me money, let them,

lucky for me. God will punish you for want-

ing to take my free money away.

I told him to get a job on which he replied

that hewill not go andwork like all the other

    (swearword).Whymust he, if he getsmoney

    for free?

Im writing this letter for the reason to in-

form the public what happened and what he

called the people giving him money. All of

you, tell him you know he is not cripple then

    youwillhearitdirectly fromhim,maybethat

GOING PINK: The team at Salon

Elan in Somerset West recently let

the colour pink go to their heads

and to the heads of their clients,

who wished to join them in raising

    awareness about breast cancer.

Some clients simply dyed their hair

pink because they have walked a

    road with cancer themselves and

others did so in solidarity with

    friends currently undergoing cancer

    treatment. Several ladies who

dared to colour a flash of pink in

their hair have come back for

more, saying they not only love the

colour lift it gives them, but it also

is a great conversation starter to

talk to other women about the con

raised from this initiative to Helder
