Hospital: anightofwaitingDELIAH BRINKHUIS
Poorconditionsandserviceat theHelderberg Hospital are onceagain in the spotlight after it took12 hours for a patient to be diag-nosed and given medicine lastWednesday.
And this was during the pa-tient’ssecondvisittothehospi-tal that day. He had given uponbeinghelpedbyareception-ist who was conducting whatappeared to be a personal con-versation, and returned hometo rather have himself admit-ted to the hospital by ambu-lance.Les Carelse, a Sir Lowry’s
Pass resident, was sufferingfrom severe chest pain andshortness of breath on Wednesdayevening.According to his daughter, Mon-
iqueCarelse, theirGPhaddiagnosedher father with cardiac failure andan enlarged liver the previousweek. They went to the hospital at 21:00,
butwaitedforthereceptionisttocon-
cludehis conversationon thephone.Theyleftaftertenminutesasthecon-versationwas still continuing. Theyreturned home and decided to havetheir father admitted to the hospitalby ambulance instead.Carelse was not allowed to go
through to the Emergency Wardwith her father when he was admit-
ted, but had to wait in the generalwaiting area. She said that at thetime, about 15 patients werewaitingto be helped.Among these patients was an
elderly woman sitting in a wheel-chair, wrapped in a blanket, while a
man, with his face covered inblood, was lying on the floor. The elderly woman was
from Grabouw and Carelsewas told that she had been atthe hospital since 08:00 thatmorning. Some six hours after their
arrival – at 05:30 – a doctor at-tended to Carelse’s fatherfor the first time, monitor-ing his heartbeat. The doc-tor concluded that X-rayshad to be conducted.Another three hours
passed before the X-rayswere finally done. Afterthis, a further forty-fiveminutes passed with nooneattending to them.Car-else then approached a nurse toask that a doctor review the
X-rays. She was, however, told thatno-one could help at the time.Carelse then asked to see the unit
manager, who then reviewed theX-raysandreferredthemtothephar-macy, where they waited another 20minutes for the prescribed medica-tion.
When Carelse and her dad’s visitto thehospital finally ended12hourslater, at 11:00 the next morning, theelderly woman from Grabouw wasstill sitting in thewheelchairandtheman was still lying on the floor – inthe same position, with his eyesclosed, just as he had been lyingwhen the Carelses first arrived.TheunsBotha,WesternCapeMin-
ister of Health, admitted dur-ing an unscheduled visit inAugust that the HelderbergHospital is under-resourced.He said a new, bigger facilityis being planned.Sithembiso Magubane,
spokesperson for theWesternCape Health Department, didnot say how complaints suchasCarelse’swill beaddressed. He also failed to answer aquestion on when and wherethe new hospital promised bythe minister will be built. He said patients at the
Emergency Unit are catego-rised according to a systemthat determines the serious-ness of their condition, and
consultation follows accordingly.Hesaid that the department could onlyimprove the service if complaintsare lodgedwith the facilitymanagerwhile they are still at the facility, orreported later to their department’scomplaints hotline at 0860 142 142 orby sending a “please call me” to079 769 1207, or emailing [email protected]

Although security measures have sincebeen intensified at local malls, the police arealso increasing their visibility. Operationsby the Somerset West Police, as part of a city-wide strategy led by the provincial police, were held at Waterstone Village Centre, Som-erset Mall, Checkers Hyper, and CBD shop-ping centres Lion Square, The Vineyard andCircle Centre.
Colonel Mary-Ann Williams, SomersetWest Police station commander, says theiroperations included patrols, checking that allsecurity measures are in place, sharing cru-
cial information and making suggestions onhow to improve security.
Williams says managers of the shoppingmalls and centres were keen on the opera-tions and were taking their suggestions onhow to improve security and prevent armedrobberies into consideration. Williams saysone suggestion in particular was that no-onewearing anything on their heads that couldhide their face be allowed access to the shop-ping mall or centre.
The operations will continue through thefestive season until the end of January.

EagleBar fails to takeoff

A building that was supposed to createmuch needed opportunities and skills inRusthof, a community plagued by drugabuse, crime and unemployment, is nowbeing occupied by illegal businesses, andeven has an unknown number of illegalbackyard squatters.
The building in Brewery Street, known asEagleBar,wasearmarkedby theCityofCapeTown for a skills development centre in 2006.
Plans by the City of Cape Town to use thisbuilding for such a centre have now beenabandoned, according to chairperson of sub-council 8, Stuart Pringle.
He says it was decided at a recent meetingto “divorce” the Eagle Bar from the need forskillsdevelopment.Hesaysthereisanurgentneed for some means to boost skills develop-ment andmake it easier for job seekers to bein contact with people offering employment, particularly of a temporary nature. “But thisillegal occupationhasheld theprocess to ran-somandunfortunately prevented the develop-ment of amuch needed skills centre.” He saysanewcreativewayof skills development is be-ing looked at.
TheformerHelderbergMunicipalityboughtthebuildingin1999forR325 000.Itwasinitiallyused as a business centre, with Rusthof resi-dents being the beneficiaries. This initiativewas short-lived and according to Francis Lu-kas,aRusthofcommunityleader,thebusiness-es failed to pay rent.
CouncillorGarrethBloor,MayoralCommit-teeMember for Tourism,Events andEconom-icDevelopment,saystheleasewithbusinesseswas cancelled in October 2002 and an evictionorder granted in March 2003.
The City of Cape town is now also gainingan eviction order against the backyard squat-ters.
Bloor says the eviction of the squatters willbe subject to legal action.“The duration of the courtprocess cannot be deter-mined as it will be depend-ent on many factors.”
Lukas says a skills devel-opment centre is desperate-lyneeded inRusthof.Unem-ployment isamajorproblem, shesays, feedingintosubstanceabuseandcrime.Shesaysthereis nothing for the youth of Rusthof to do, andtheskillscentrewouldhavehelpedimmensely

A local estate agentwho wished to remain
anonymous, says it is difficult to place a valueonthepropertywithoutaninspection,butesti-mates that if it is upgraded, it could fetch be-tween R4million and R4,5million.

jaar by die skool aansoek gedoen enis weer teleurgestel.
Venter sê die sielkundigehet ’n aandagtekort-hiperaktiwiteit-versteuring (ATHV) by Ewald gedia-gnoseer.“Die diagnose is deur ’n dokter be-

skoolgaan.“Hy is ywerig enwil skoolgaan. Ek

Shelver voeg by alle oproepe, brie-

Tennis clubwants to serveinterdict against neighbourDALEEN FOUCHÉ
The RecreationTennisClubinSom-erset West is apply-ingforacourtinter-dict against one ofitsneighboursaftermonths of conflictbetween the twoparties.
Salie de Swardt, chairperson of theRecreation TennisClub, says the sit-uation has become sounbearable that thetennis club commit-tee decided to apply for an interdict againsttheir neighbour, Michael Chelin.Chelin initially approached the District-
Mailabout the“disturbance”causedbyplay-ers at the tennis court. He has lived next tothe tennis court since 2007, but it has onlybecome a disturbance in May this year, hesays.Heexplainsthattwoofthetenniscourtsare directly next to his house and the fre-quency of tennis players using these courtsin “the early hours of the morning” has be-come amajor nuisance for him and his fami-ly.Chelin says the two courts next to his
house are used as early as 06:45 on a dailybasis, while other tennis courts, furtheraway from the houses, are available. Chelinsaysheapproached the committee to requestameetingwith themabout the situation, butsays his request was met with “aggression”and letters from the committee’s lawyers.De Swardt, however, says Chelin’s beha-
viour towards him and players at the clubhas been inappropriate and loadedwith cuss
words. He says Che-lin, who has a gatethat leads to theclub, has unlawful-ly entered the clubgrounds and on oneoccasion, interrup-ted a tournament.De Swardt says hehas also yelled atchildren playing onthe tennis courts.Chelin admits go-
ing on to the clubpremises, butsaysitwas only to requestthat players useanother court, anddenies ever inter-
ruptinga tournament.Hesayshemighthaveraised his voice when players occupied thecourt at 05:30 on a Sunday morning. On 17 September, Chelin received a letter
from the club’s lawyers stipulating severalproposals tosolvetheproblem.Thisincludedadjusted times for the two tennis courts andasignrequestingplayers touse theother ten-nis courts, further away from the houses, ifthey are available.Chelin, however, says this is not accepta-
ble. “The proposal is not sufficient.”He says he would like the club to prohibit
players fromusing the two courts next to hishouse in the mornings and after 17:00 in theafternoon.Theclubhas sinceerectedabarri-er at Chelin’s access gate to the club and isin the process of applying for a court inter-dict.“The Recreation Tennis Club exists more
than 50 years and is the biggest club in SouthAfrica. We have always had good relation-ships with our neighbours and never hadsimilar complaints,” De Swardt says.

Evictionswere ‘illegal’, saysSisulu reportJAMEY GORDON
Mum seems to be the word asfar as the South African Na-tional Roads Agency Limited(Sanral) and the City of CapeTown are concerned after bothparties were severely castigat-ed last week.
This follows after the report bythe Lwandle ministerial inquiryrevealed that the evictions were“illegal”. The report was submit-ted to Parliament’s human settle-ments portfolio committee byHu-man Settlements Minister Lin-diwe Sisulu last Thursday. While outlining its findings, Si-
sulu said that Sanral and theCity,as well as the Sheriff of Strand, the SouthAfrican Police Servicesand the Law Enforcement Agen-cies of the City “knowingly con-spired” and effected the eviction. The report further stated that
although Sanral had obtained aninterimcourt order toprevent im-
minent invasions in January, thecourt order was not an evictionorder and did not authorise San-ral to effect an eviction. The court order was limited to
preventing further land invasiononly, not to authorise the removalof any persons or structures al-ready erected on the land. Therefore, the forceful evic-
tions on 2 and 3 June were illegal, aswell as theactionsof thepartiesinvolved, said Sisulu.“The eviction was a deplorable
act,” said Sisulu.“It played itself out for two full
days, as various organs of stateand spheres of government fid-dled and were very quick to dis-tance themselves from all of this. They saw nothing. They heardnothing. They knew nothing andwere not responsible for any-thing.”She added that “the unashamed
brutality that played itself out inLwandle, should never be tolerat-ed; what happened here between
the City, Sanral and the South Af-rican Police Service was despica-ble, immoral and criminal”.DistrictMail approached San-
ral to comment on why the evic-tion was effected although thecourt orderwas simply to preventland further invasion, andwheth-er compensationwouldbeprovid-ed for any loss of or damage to per-sonal or other property or goodsbelonging to the evictees duringevictions. Sanral, however, re-sponded that theywill not be com-menting on the issue at this time.DistrictMail also requested
comment from the City, who hason numerous occasions made itknown that they were by nomeans involved in carrying outthe “eviction order”, althoughlaw enforcement clearly assistedwith the demolishing of homes onthe days the evictions took place.Although the City did not com-
ment on their involvement, Pier-rinne Leukes, spokesperson ofthe Executive Mayor, Patricia de
Lille, said: “City law enforcementpersonnelwere on the scene as re-quested by the SAPS, who wereexecuting thecourtorderwith theSheriff of the Court as requestedand obtained by Sanral, the own-ers of the land.”Furthermore the report con-
firmed that the Sanral-ownedland in Asanda Village was un-lawfully occupied, and althoughthis cannot be condoned, thereare laws and processes that pre-scribe how evictions should becarried out andare binding onall, said Sisulu. The report also briefly outlined
the recommendation to amendlegislation, specifically the Pre-vention of Illegal Eviction (PIE)Act, which will be processed byParliament.DistrictMail previously pub-
lished that the installation offlush toilets for Lwandle evictees, who have settled into their newlyerected homes on the SANationalRoads Agency Limited (Sanral)
owned land they were evictedfrom, commenced on 13 October.Ward Councillor Mbuyiselo
Matha explained that the processentailed replacing the existing 45chemical toilets that are separateto the housing structures with 45flush toilets. This week Matha confirmed
that thus far 20 toilets have beeninstalled.Matha also said that 480emergency houses have beenerected on the piece of land in As-anda Village and 475 evicteeshave been relocated from the hallinto their new homes. However, 287 evictees still re-
main in the hall and their hopeof being settled is yet to be real-ised.He said that these residentswill
be moved into homes once it hasbeen determined whether a totalof 234 or 849 homeswill be erectedfor the evictees. This will be confirmed as part
of the inquiry into the Lwandleevictions, says Matha.

Woordvoerder vir die Strand-poli-sie, konst.MbuleloMafuna reageeras volg: If the incident has hap-pened as described, clearly themembers failed to perform their du-ties. The resident noted date andtime but not the members or regis-tration of vehicle or call sign on thesideof thevehicle.Thatmakes itdif-ficult to identify the members in-volved so that measures can be tak-en. I encourage the public to reportincidents involving police, but theymust identify the members in-volved. The matter is investigated.

both his parents, who were re-spected school teachers, and hisson Irvin, within a few years ofeach other. His mother was lovingly known

Shortly thereafter, Chris at-tempted to change his first nameto Kristopher in order to confirmhis Khoisan heritage and to beclassified as such. However, he was denied this

To pay for this trans-gression, Chris was never issuedwith a barcoded identity docu-ment with the resultant bureau-cratic red-tape causing delays inthe release of his bodily remains,so that he could only finally be puttoreston30September in theEdenMemorial Cemetery in Philippi, after amovingKhoisan burial cer-emony(theSeventh!Nau) fromtheHoly Trinity, Anglican Church inKalk Bay.Longwill Chris be remembered.* Further information about

State health facilities have continu-ously come under fire for their infe-rior service and frequently appall-ing conditions which patients aresubjected to, yet there seems to beno immediate solution for this. Those who cannot afford the care
of private hospitals, or do not havethe certainty of a medical aid haveno alternative than turning to statefacilities.Falling ill and being hospitalised
is intimidating enoughwithout hav-ing to endure the often ignorant ar-rogance of staff at these facilities, along with an unfriendly environ-ment.Patients queuing outside govern-
ment clinics for hours before sun-rise have become an all too familiarsight. So are those waiting in line at a
hospital – sometimes for half a day– to be helped.Unfortunately this has been ac-
cepted as normal for those left to themercy of these facilities. There is, however, no fairness in
not receiving a service that shouldbe readily available. These facilities are under im-
mense pressure with constantlygrowing communities, and limitedresources. And staff have to workunder challenging conditions forlong hours at a time.It is time for the department of
health to realise the urgency of hav-ingtostepup andacceptresponsibil-ity for their health facilities.Service needs to be drastically im-
proved and conditions for patientsand staff have to be bettered to en-sure an operation which we can callproudly South African.

As ek dink aan dorpe soos

Daar is paaie watjare laas opgeknapis.
inwoners geweldigfrustrerend wees.
Ek is bekommerd datdieselfde hier by onsgaan gebeur.

STATE TAXI SERVICE? Is this police vehicle being used to taxi civilians around? A reader sent DistrictMail a series of photos taken lastTuesday morning at 07:25 on the N2. The photos show a woman exiting the passenger side and then collecting bags from the boot. Thereader, who prefers to remain anonymous, frequents the N2 often forwork purposes and says he sees this happening at least once a month.LieutenantColonel André Traut, corporate communication spokespersonfor the provincial police, says that the vehicle was used for official duties and no irregularities could be established during an internal investigation.

Highnoon forShiloh’smusical opusDistrictMail journalist MarkStuart cornered Gordon’s Bayauthor Shiloh Noone to ask himhow he felt about receiving four-star reviews from Rolling Stoneand London’s Record Collectormagazines for his book Seeker’sGuide to the rhythmof yesteryear.
Shiloh, who also presents theshow Songcatcher on Sundays from19:00 to 20:30 on Fine Music Radio(FMR), said he was pleased with thereviews, especially the London’sRecord Collector review.
He stated matter of factly that hewas the first South African to get afour star review from Rolling Stonemagazine.
Thebookis the firstglobalhistoryrockbookever to incorporate all ho-ly seven genres of musical history, namely Blues, Rock & Roll, Surfgui-tar, Folk Music, Psychedelia, Brit-ish Beat and Progressive Rock.
To keep up with the changingtimesShilohput his impressive 700-pageA4“summarised”history&de-finitive reference to music (1950–1979) onto Amazon kindle lastmonth.
He explains that the book tookhim about ten years to write. In or-der to gain information on some ofthe lesser known artists featured inthe book, whomhe could not find onWikipedia, he travelled overseasand physically tracked the musi-cians down to interview them or geta photo.
Shiloh launched the first editionof his book nine years ago at CDWarehouse at the Waterfront inCape Town, an event that was at-tended by about 800 people.
The latest edition is the seventhand final edition and he said he feltit was necessary as there was somuch more he had wanted to add.
He explained that he wanted tohighlight the fantastic bands andartists that were not necessarily acommercial or front-line success, and give them recognition for whatthey had achieved.
AsLondon’sRecordCollectorAlanLewis says in his review, “Whereelse would you read about Rodri-guez and Shawn Phillips alongsideTir Na Nog, Duffy Power and TitusGroan?”RollingStonecriticMilesKeylock
says “It’s the catalogue of subterra-nean basement blues riffs about for-gotten footnotes such as a BlueCheers, Capability Brown, The Dogthat Bit People and Freedoms Chil-dren that makes this kaleidoscopeanthology essential reading”.
Shiloh says: “I learned fromFrankFrost (thedeceaseddrummerfor the Blues Broers) that one must
always give credit where credit isdue.
“Writing this book was an amaz-ing ten year journey for me. I hadsent it to Rolling Stone magazinemany timesandneverhearda thingfrom them, so when I finally didhear that I had received a four-starrating from them, I was pleased.”
He says although music has goneonto MP3 format, CDs and Blue-tooth have enabled music to reachpeople it had never reached before.
He adds that while this is a pro-gression, CD popularity is begin-ning to wane and vinyl records andturntables (with USB ports) aremaking a big comeback, especiallyamong the younger generation.
Shiloh says there are now proba-bly more vinyl shops in Cape Townthan CD shops, which he believes isa sign of a musical evolution.
He has also written other books, one a novel titled Witches of Sark, which he describes as a devilishnovel that never took off, and a vol-umeofpoetrycalled42 forthechosenfew, with the foreword by the actorBrad Pitt, who Shiloh collaboratedwith on the life of Nick Drake (a folk
singer from the ’60s and ’70s).“Some of my poems have been in-
cluded as lyrics for Paul Brett’sband Sage in the UK. The album iscalledEmergence, produced by TomNewman of Tubular Bells fame. This is a great honour for me.”
TheLPandCDhavealso justbeenlaunched.
He says his next book is calledRoyal Assassination (Princess Di)“but so far no publisher wants totouch it so I’m looking for someoneto make a movie about it.
“I’ve also written a script aboutJan van Riebeeck, but so far I havehad no takers.”
) Shiloh would like to give awayone Seeker’s Guide to the rhythm ofyesteryear to a Helderberg resident. To win a copy of this book answerthe following question: Which twomagazines have given ShilohNoone’s book a four-star rating?
E-mail your answers to Mark Stu-art at [email protected]. Allthe correct SMSes will be placed in-to a draw and one lucky winner se-lected.

cartoonist for the DistrictMail, says twoof his paintings, valued at R8 000 in total, are currently stuck at the postal depot. Heexplains that the buyer specifically want-ed those paintings and they cannot be re-placed by something else. He says he hastried to track the paintings down, but hashad no luck in finding them and is consid-ering repainting the two artworks.Groenewald also creates calendars and

him that theyprefer using the courier ser-vice, because it is more reliable than thepostal service. He says thebusiness is cur-rently exploring ways in which to give adiscount to small internet businesses thataredependantonpostal andcourier servi-ces, but can no longer use the postal ser-vice. Johnny Burke, owner of HelderbergExpress,a local couriercompany, says thestrike has not had an immediate positiveimpact on his business. He,however, predicts thata lackof trust
in the Post Office will filter through andmorepeoplewill start touseprivate couri-er companies. He hopes that his business will see an
increase in the mid- to long-term.
Do you have ROOM?Don’t worry, I am not ask-ing for a place to stay. TheROOM I am referring to isthe acronym forRunout ofMoney risk (ROOM).
Thisisapplicabletoanyonewho isno longerworkingandreliantondrawinganincomefrom their savings. The ques-tion is:doyouhaveenoughormore importantly are youdrawing too much?A US financial adviser by
thenameofWilliamPBergenconducted extensive re-search to identify a strategythat would allow his clients the best chanceof enjoying real (inflation adjusted) growthfor at least 30 years and he concluded thestudy with the following rules of thumb:• Draw a starting income yield of 4%.• Increase the $ income amount annually
by the official inflation rate only.Thestudyassumedaverysimpleunderly-
ing investment of 50% in shares and 50% incash, which was rebalanced annually.Allan Gray did similar research for local
investorsandproved that if you followed theabove rule of thumb, your income wouldhave lasted for at least 30 years, 93% of thetime.
So,noneed fora financial advis-er, simply apply the 4% rule andlive happily ever after. But whatif I told you that a “proper” finan-cial adviser, not an assurancesalesman, could increase the 4%income yield by as much as 50%?In 2013 researchers Blanchett
andKaplanwroteapaperinwhichthey defined a new financial plan-ning term called Gamma.Gamma is the value added
through the use of financial plan-ning tools and techniques beyondthe management of portfolio as-sets tomakemore informed finan-cial planning decisions.
Blachett andKaplanexplored five types ofgammathatimpactfinancialoutcomesexpe-rienced by retirees: (1) using appropriate as-set allocation strategies; (2) creating dynam-ic withdrawal strategies at retirement; (3)understanding theappropriateuseof annui-ty products; (4) choosing between tax-effi-cient investing and withdrawal strategies;and (5) building a portfolio that accounts forrisks facedby retirees through liability rela-tive portfolio optimization. The key to a successful retirement out-
come is the quality of advice you receive, whichencompassesmuchmore thansimplypicking the best performing fund.

Choose subjectswith future inmindNow is the right time for Gr 9-learners todecide which subjects they will take forthe rest of their school career.
“Learners in grade 9must choose their sub-jectswith care, and not before they have thor-oughly realised the implications of theirchoice,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, directorof The Independent Institute of Education,
SA’s largestandmostaccreditedprivatehigh-er education institution.
) What do you want to be?Many learners want to pass matric well
enough to be able to further their studies. Some will consider degrees that are strictabout required subjects and performance. Ifyou are clear about what youwant to do, lookatwebsites of both public andprivate tertiary
institutions to verify their requirements, andlet that guide your subject choices.
) Whatifyoudon’tknowwhatyouwantto become? For those who are not yet 100% sure about
which career to pursue, Coughlan suggestsmaking choices that will keep a wide rangeof options open.“There is a list of designated subjectswhich
are the ones that higher education institu-tions require for admission. Ensure that allyour subjects are drawn from that list, unlessyou are absolutely sure you want to pursuea career that won’t require higher education. But don’t make that decision lightly, as youmay well change your mind later on.”
) Gatewaysubjectsleaveyouwithroomto manoeuvre laterSubjects such as Maths and Science allow
you to keep your options open, asmany areasof further study require them. If you are oneof themanywho strugglewith these subjects,it may be worth keeping only one of them.Maths Literacy must only be taken as a lastresort, as doing so will limit your choices.
) What makes you happy? It is important to pursue a fieldwhichgenu-
inely interests you, as the vast majority ofyour life will be spent working, and it will bemuch better if you do something you love. De-terminewhich subjectsmirror your interestsand career dreams, and include them.
) What are you good at?Choose at least two subjects that you really
enjoy and in which you can do well. Remem-ber that admission to higher education is per-formance-based, so you have to do well insome subjects rather than badly in all of thembecause you chose only gateway subjects. If you know you will need Maths but are
struggling with it, it may be sensible not todo Science and instead to do a subject that re-quires lessmathematics, such as Hospitality,so that you can raise your overall score. Thiswill alsohelp to reduceyour stress andenableyou to give more time to Maths.
It is important to choose the right subjects.STOCK PHOTO

Thechangingweatherpatterns of late got mewondering if any ofour readers had real-ised that due to the ab-sence of red tide thesepast few years, moremarine life has sur-vived and thereforemore fish are beingcaught.
I believe that bait fishare more abundant be-cause there has been nored tides and thishas as-sisted in nurturing andbreeding certain species of fish suchas kob all along our coasts.Red tide caused havoc with abalo-
ne a number of years ago and morerecently tons of crayfish virtuallywalked out of the water along ourWest Coast. Not long ago an abundance of sea-
weed and even octopi died and werewasheduponour localbeachescaus-ing a terrible stench, known as thegreen tide.In 1962 I witnessed the worst red
tide that Ihaveeverseen.Tonsof rot-ting fish washed up on the coastlineof Gordon’s Bay and Strand due tothe severe lack of oxygen levels.Offshore winds across the surface
caused up-swellings of microscopicorganisms, which are drawn to thesurfaceandthenbloom, whichin theprocess use upmost of the oxygen inthe water leaving very little oxygenfor any other marine life to survive. There are still positive reports of

nige krieketspeler is, haar inspirasie is.
hede opgeskerp hou, oefen Anri minstens seskeer ’n week vir ’n uur of twee. Selfs in haarvrye tyd speel sy saam haar broer krieket.
Anrisedroomisomhaarlandinalbeisport-

springboard for many players who havegone on to play provincial cricket at highschool level. Let’shope thiswill be the casefor many years to come.

DIVING THROW: Christiaan de Kock of Beaumont makes a spectacular dive and underarm throw at the stumps in an attempt to run out a player in the final of DistrictMail/Beaumont Sixes Tournament in 2008. This Saturday will mark the 20th anniversary of this popular u.13 cricket tournament, which is organised annually by Beaumont Primary School and sponsored byDistrictMail. DistrictMail/BeaumontSixescelebrate20thanniversaryMARK STUART
This yearmarks exactly two dec-ades since the first DistrictMail/Beaumont Cricket Sixes Compe-tition was played at BeaumontPrimary School.
This great traditional competi-tion will be played for the 20th timethis Saturday (1 November).
The DistrictMail’s associationwith and sponsorship of this iconicevent started shortly after Les Kets(now deputy headmaster) startedworking as a teacher at Beaumontin 1994.
Les, who is a keen cricketer andplayed wicketkeeper for the Somer-set West Cricket Club at the time, organised a mini sixes tournamentbetween four schools in the firstyear he was at the school.
“A sixes cricket tournament wassomething I always wanted to orga-nise at school because I had enjoyed
playing in so many sixes com-petitions myself and I thoughtthe boys would enjoy it asmuch as I did.
“During the first competi-tion in 1994 the manager of theDistrictMail, Jan Celliers, whostayed across the road from theschool, saw the activity at theschool and came to watch thetournament,” Kets remem-bers.
“He liked what he saw, madean appointment to meet me thefollowing Monday and decidedto sponsor the tournament in1995 and the rest is history.”
Les says the following yearhe invited 18 schools fromaround the Helderberg to takepart in the tournament.
He says it was decided be-tweenhimandtheDistrictMailto give each boy taking part inthe tournament a free T-shirt,a boerewors roll and a cool-drink.
The winning team was alsoawarded the DistrictMail/
Beaumont Floating Shield, which isstill in existence today, plus eachboy in the winning team receiveda miniature trophy (to keep).
Most of these traditions have en-dured the 20 years and this event isstill one of the tournaments u.13cricketers in and around the Hel-derberg look forward to playing in.
“For the first eight years, we had18 schools taking part and eachteam was only able to play twogames before the final. This meantthe teams that were not playing hadto sit around and wait, which wasnot ideal.
“I then decided on a 12 team for-mat to be played on three fields, which meant that each team playedthree matches before the final wasplayed on the A field.”
Les says he has never changed theformat and has deliberately kept itas simple as possible.
“What has stood out for me aboutthis event is theDistrictMail’s loyalsponsorship year in and year out.I believe it is unique in sport thatone company remains so loyal andcommitted to sponsoring the sameevent for 19 years in succession.
“The tournament has only beenrained out twice and when it wasI rescheduled it for the followingweek and in both instances all theinvited teams were back to play.”
After the tournament was rainedout for the second time, theychanged the date from early in Octo-ber to the first week in November.
“The standard of cricket has im-proved dramatically since the firsttournaments. I think this has to dowith the amount of T20 cricket onTV as well as better school coachesand private coaching.
“The boys are also playing better, smarter cricket with less big hittersin action and more stroke makers. We’ve also seen more and more spinbowlers come into the competition.
“All in all I believe this tourna-ment has been a real asset for crick-et in the Helderberg and I hope itcarries on for many years to come,”he adds contemplatively.
