DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE
REPORT
December 6, 2014
As 2014 comes to a close, as well as our 3 year terms, I’m pleased to say our District is doing well. As of our last District Meeting held in Spring Branch at CBC Church, we have all service positions filled. I feel our District has grown in both numbers and serenity. Our new team has some great things coming up for the next 3 years. They are already working on the 2015 Fall Assembly to be held in San Antonio. What I really want to say is “Thank You” for the privilege to serve as your DR for the past 3 years. It has been a blessing which has added so much to my recovery. Without the love and experience of many of the long time members, and new members of our wonderful fellowship, I would have been at a loss for ideas and solutions. We started this term planning for the 2012 Fall Assembly and continued from there to accomplish many great projects.
I look forward to serving our new team whenever possible and will

The District 12 Quarterly Business Meeting was held at the Community Bible Church in Bulverde hosted by Spring Branch AFG. The meeting was called to order at 9:30 AM by District Representative Al M. After a Moment of Silence followed by the Serenity Prayer, the Twelve Traditions, Twelve Concepts of Service and the General Warranties of the Conference were read by members attending the meeting. Because of the increased attendance by both out-going and incoming group representatives and guests, District Representative, Al M, asked that each attendee introduce themselves by name, home group affiliation and position. The outgoing group representatives introduced the incoming group representatives. Al M welcomed all guests and expressed appreciation to Spring Branch AFG for hosting the meeting. Roll call was taken by District Secretary, Carola T. 12 groups were represented, the 2/3 voting majority was 9. Nine guests also signed in and were present for the activities, along with the outgoing officers and some of the coordinators. The Minutes from the 6 September 2014 District Meeting were reviewed and one correction was necessary. The correction is to read as follows under “District Literature Coordinator”. The entry should now read “Mark K offered to continue on in that capacity and was approved by the voting body”. The DR declared that, with this correction made, the Minutes would be accepted. Orientation packets were provided to the incoming group representatives. Treasurer’s Report: Allison W provided the Group Representatives with an updated Treasurer’s Report along with a “Contribution by Groups” sheet and “Appeals Letter” sheet. Allison also provided “Clip It” Sheets indicating the new Area Treasurer’s address. She also reminded each GR that funds donated to the Pass the Basket were reimbursable from their groups. Allison requested the help of anyone interested in auditing this year’s financials. (PLEASE SEE FULL FINANCIAL REPORTS IN THIS ISSUE)
District Representative’s Report: Al M thanked all of the out-going group representatives, officers, and coordinators for their work and support over the past three years. (PLEASE SEE HIS FULL REPORT ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THIS ISSUE). COORDINATOR REPORTS: District Alateen Coordinator: Lynn S provided and talked about the P.O.S.S.E. (Participants Of Sponsors Sharing Everything) Flyer. P.O.S.S.E. will be held 20-22 March 2015 in Gonzalez. Pertinent Information can be found in this issue of Al-Anews. (PLEASE SEE LYNN’S FULL REPORT IN THIS ISSUE) District Archivist: Michael B is continuing on in this position and provided us with a Group History Checklist (404.doc) obtained from the WSO which outlines the questions/topics used to take a group’s history. (PLEASE SEE MICHAEL’S FULL REPORT IN THIS ISSUE) District Literature Coordinator: Mark K provided us with an email address specifically for literature. It is [email protected]. He also talked about the pamphlet “Why Conference Approved Literature”. (PLEASE SEE HIS FULL REPORT IN THIS ISSUE) Al-Anews Editor: Martha J asked that all reports be turned in on a timely manner. Due to the holidays, she is expecting to get the Al-Anews out in January. She will be working closely with Allison W, our new Al-Anews Editor, to show her the ropes. District Public Outreach: Sandy was not in attendance but provided Al with her report. (PLEASE SEE IT IN ITS ENTIRETY IN THIS ISSUE). District Travel Coordinator: No report filed. SAAIS Liaison: Donna D could not attend but provided a report which can be found in this issue of Al-Anews. Spanish Language Coordinator: Not in attendance. No report filed CONTINUING BUSINESS: Literature Coordinator/Liaison Position: After much debate and questioning as to whether this position should be a part of the District or the San Antonio Al-Anon Information Service, Rich M made a motion that read as follows: “I move that the Literature Coordinator position remain under the District 12 authority.” The motion was seconded by Ken K. There was a request that before the vote was taken, the motion be reworded. It was not. The motion passed by majority. 8 For, 1 Against, 3 Abstaining.

Because there are no clear cut guidelines as to what this position’s duties entail, it was agreed that an ad hoc committee be formed to formulate such guidelines as to job description. The ad hoc committee consists of Dolores W, Tricia L, Mark K, Carola T. Travel Coordinator Position: Dan M, in absentia, had expressed to Al M his interest in filling the position. Al verbalized his desire to be of service and he was voted in by acclamation. NEW BUSINESS: Purchase of “Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism 2015 – 2nd Printing”: In the past, the District has allocated funds to purchase 400 copies (English Versions) and 100 (Spanish Versions) at a cost of $180.00. Each group would have the opportunity of receiving 250 free copies if they provided to the District an explanation of how they were going to use them. A discussion ensued about the various ways a group could use these informative booklets. Martha J made a motion that reads as follows: “I move that we order 400 English and 100 Spanish copies of Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism 2015 at a cost of $180. The motion was seconded by Susan B. Motion passed unanimously. Meeting Schedule for 2015: Our newly elected District Representative, Dolores W, provided the following dates for Quarterly Business Meetings. Those with an * will also have a workshop. They are as follows: JANUARY 24*, APRIL 25*, JULY 25*, OCTOBER 24. If your group would like to host a meeting, please contact Dolores W via phone or e-mail. A MINI WORKSHOP FROM OUR OUT GOING AREA DELEGATE: Nancy M broke the attendees into teams and we played a Safari thru the Service Manual asking us to locate certain sections/a key phrase in the Service Manual. It was fun and informative. Thanks Nancy … something to bring back to our groups. The basket was passed and $58.74 collected. The meeting was concluded with the Al-Anon Declaration at 11:45 AM. Potluck followed ANNOUNCEMENTS: 1. District 12 will be hosting the Fall 2015 Area Assembly. A committee is now being formed. We will need a LARGE NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS TO BE OF SERVICE in November. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up at the next District meeting. More info to come in the following months.
2. Your new Public Outreach Coordinator is looking for volunteers to serve on the team. Carola would also like to visit each and every group to give a mini-workshop presentation on tools and resources available to your group for public outreach on a local/community level. If you are interested in serving on that team, contact Carola at [email protected]. NOTE FROM THE OUT-GOING SECRETARY: It has been a privilege and a joy for me to serve District 12, and I know that Donna D will do an outstanding job. I appreciate all the encouragement and support I have received. Thank each and every one of you for giving me this opportunity.
Respectfully submitted, Carola T

Welcome to the following new District 12 AMIASs: Michael O, Debbie S, Rhonda McN, and Heidi D and to the recertified AMIASs: Bill P, Nancy P, Jeff M, and Jennifer K. We still have only two Alateen meetings a week in District 12. Both groups meet on Thursday -- Pass It On Alateen at 6:00 pm in Rolling Oaks Christian Church, 7150 Stahl Road, San Antonio 78247 (contact Nancy 210-658-6816) and North Loop Alateen at 7 pm in Coker United Methodist Church, 231 E North Loop Rd, San Antonio 78216, Wesley Building 801 upstairs (contact Jennifer 210-386-2373). Information on the Alateen sponsors’ training workshop weekend Program of Sponsors Sharing Everything (POSSE) is in this issue. Please check it out and consider attending a great weekend with Alateen group sponsors sharing Alateen experience, strength, and hope of their Unforgettable Adventure in Alateen group sponsorship! The revised (May 30, 2014) East Texas Area Safety and BehavioraI Requirements did eliminate the requirement to attend District meetings and District Alateen Sponsors’ meetings, but just as it is important to attend Al-Anon meetings to complete our own recovery triangle, so are the District meetings to our service side of our recovery triangle. It is highly recommended that we attend at least one District and District Sponsors meeting. I will hold a District Al-Anon Members Involved in Alateen Service (AMIAS) meeting at the 24 January District 12 meeting in La Vernia.
In Alateen Service,

The goal of the District 12 Outreach program is to offer the materials from Al-Anon to as many people as possible. If the community is informed about the fellowship and understands the help Al-Anon can provide, our groups will attract many who need our program of recovery. This year the Outreach program provided that access to about 8,600 people. All I can say is - wow!! The Outreach Committee was busy attending Health Fairs throughout the year. We travelled far and wide though Bexar County, totaling about 1,000 miles. We visited small companies like Lucifer Lighting (75 employees) and large organizations like Texas A&M (4000 students and employees). We visited non-profit and for-profit, Universities and Community Colleges. We set up on a multi-leveled garage, open-air lawns, and parking lots. We visited companies that were secured, we went into lock-down, and were even escorted to the bathroom. Some place offered us lunch while some didn’t offer us a drink of water. After three years, we are seasoned and know what to do! Currently, we are involved with the DWI Court 8. It’s a misdemeanor court that offers a yearlong program of recovery instead of jail time. Participants have a 5 part program for recovery – meeting with a social worker, individual and group counseling, AA meetings, and DWI Court meeting about every other week. In the Al-Anon meeting, which runs concurrently with the docket, we do a Newcomers meeting, hand out brochures and meeting schedules, and encourage the families and friends to come back. I didn’t know what to expect when I embarked on my journey. I have met so many people who helped us along the way. I am grateful to the Court personnel, the Al-Anon volunteers who were ready to drive all over south Texas, Group12 AFG which supported us, the company representatives who gave such a warm welcome, the participants who shared their hearts and minds with us, and even the parking attendants who helped us carry in our bags, boxes, and banners. Well, it was an experience of a lifetime and I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy S Outreach District 12
In order to satisfy the literature needs of all groups, I would like any suggestions on what conference approved literature (CAL) you would like to have available at district meetings. How can the district better serve your literature needs? Would you like to know more about CAL and why we don’t use “outside literature” at our meetings? Please contact me with these or other questions or comments. I have created an email account for literature coordination. It is [email protected].

Monthly speaker meetings continue to be held at Club 12 on the first Saturday of each month at 7pm featuring an AA and an Al-Anon speaker with different District 12 Groups hosting each meeting. Mark S continues to be the monthly speaker chairman and hosts for 2015 are being scheduled. Our SAAIS meeting is held quarterly prior to this speaker meeting to hopefully improve attendance and help spread the word, plus have a good time. We continue to have CAL available which has been purchased from WSO for groups at a reduced purchase rate. The AIS has been successfully using an answering service for phone duty with Al-Anon members from District 12 and 13 taking 12 step calls from their respective districts.

A total number of 258 calls were taken between 2 February and 4 April 2014. Of these, 194 calls were referred to the web and 64 calls were referred to a monitor (return call by Al-Anon member). Jim S has joined the answering committee. Calls will be rotated among the monitors. We were asked to call the SAAIS number to test how our calls were handled by the answering service and report. Our website continues to be monitored and updated regularly. It is a very useful individual and group tool. Within the next 18 months, a new website will need to be developed and implemented. A committee is in place and seeking ideas and solutions. More details will follow! Our 11th Serenity Celebration was held on Saturday, October 4th at the Bulverde Senior Center with Al-Anon speaker Cindy S from Helotes and AA speaker Gay N from San Antonio. Elections were held at the September 6th meeting and all service positions were filled.
Thank you for my service! Donna D
This is my final edition as editor. I thank you for your support and patience. I have learned a lot about the business side of Al-Anon over the last three years. As our closing says, I will take what I like and leave the rest. Your newsletter is in very capable hands with Allison W as the editor. As soon as this issue goes out, she will be taking over the [email protected] email address. Please address your comments, ideas, etc, to her. With the election of new GRs, there will be changes to the distribution list. If you or anyone you know wishes to be added to or removed from the distribution aliases, please send your request to the above address. Thanks for your support.
Progress, not perfection.

Website News SAAIS has a new website. It has just gone live, so you can be among the first to check it out. The address is:
www.texas-al-anon.org/sanantonio This is a link off the Texas Al-Anon website. Sharing resources with them allow us to save money and make our information more readily available to more people. The meeting schedule includes a map so you can easily find meetings in your area. For the time being, the old SAAIS website is still operational. It can be found at:
www.san-antonio-alanon.org
While you are checking out our new website, you may want to visit the member pages of the WSO website. Here’s the address:
www.al-anon.alateen.org
It’s been revamped and you can go to the member pages immediately by clicking on the member tab on the top of the page and typing in your group name followed by AFG... The 21th P.O.S.S.E. (Program Of Sponsors Sharing Everything)
To be held in Gonzales, Texas, March 20, 21, 22, 2015
The purpose of P.O.S.S.E. is to provide a training weekend for Alateen group sponsors and Al-Anon
members at least 21 years of age interested in serving as Alateen group sponsors.
September 1994 the East Texas Area Alateen Coordinator, Kimberly G., along with two other Al-Anon
member Alateen group sponsors, put a basic format together and it has remained constant for twenty-one
years. The weekend is full of workshops discussing the Al-Anon principles and sharing our experience,
strength and hope of being an Alateen group sponsor. Some have been group sponsors for many years,
some for just a year or so and some have not yet been group sponsors. We share the common bond of our
compassion for the teenage and younger children of alcoholic homes.
One of P.O.S.S.E.’s goals is to strengthen the relationships between Alateen group sponsors and provide a
network of resources for attending Al-Anon, AA, and Alateen events. Another is learning the procedures
for taking Alateens to such events and being safe while in attendance.
An Alateen group sponsor does more than sit in a meeting room once week for one hour and let the teens
vent. In the workshops, we share our experience, strength and hope of being an Alateen group sponsor.
We become more familiar with the Alateen literature and learn new ideas for guiding the teens with their
program of recovery.
An Alateen group sponsor differs from a personal sponsor. P.O.S.S.E. provides a time for having fun and
learning to take care of ourselves to be an effective and positive Alateen group sponsor.
The weekend begins Friday at 4:00 pm with registration, at 5:00 pm we all go to town and have dinner
(Dutch treat) at the best Mexican restaurant in Gonzales. The rest of the weekend meals are prepared,
served and cleaned up by the camp staff. The first session begins around 7:00 pm and we go full tilt until
Sunday morning at 11:00 am. We bring our own sleeping bags or bedding and towels, personal hygiene
products and comfortable clothing. As with any Al-Anon gathering coffee, tea and water are
complementary and we bring our own sodas/sport drinks and snacks for the hospitality table.
Each district is encouraged to send their District Alateen Coordinator or District Representative to
P.O.S.S.E. Registrations must be POSTMARKED no later than March 06, 2015. The facility will
accommodate up to 64 in motel style rooms. Each air conditioned room sleeps four with a shower and
two lavatories. Camp regulations prohibit Walk-ins but a registration may be transferred to another of the
same gender. If you come for one hour or the entire weekend the cost is $125.00 per person. A certificate
of completion will be awarded on Sunday morning. This weekend will count toward your Al-Anon
Member Involved in Alateen Service (AMIAS) training requirement in your AMIAS certification process.

DISTRICT PUBLIC OUTREACH VISION
This is the direction I wish to pursue These are the themes I wish to target
►TAKING AIM AT AWARENESS OF AL-ANON ON A LOCAL LEVEL
►TARGETING WITHIN YOUR COMMUNITY AND RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO THE
GROUPS TO DO SO
►BEFORE WE CAN ATTRACT, WE HAVE TO MAKE AWARE
►OUR INDIVIDUAL GROUP HEALTH DEPENDS ON GROWTH
For every alcoholic, 10 other people are affected. Why so few Al-Anon groups? Why are our numbers diminishing? In order for a group to flourish and grow, it needs new members. How do we get new members? I believe we reach out to our local community with information and make them aware that YES, AL-ANON IS AVAILABLE AND WILL WELCOME THOSE SUFFERING FROM THE AFFECTS OF SOMEONE ELSE’S DRINKING. I believe that each of us in recovery needs to be a cheerleader, crusader and ambassador for the Al-Anon/Alateen program. It is my plan to educate and enthuse each group within our District to get out there and stomp the pavement, knock on doors, talk to people, leave Al-Anon literature, and educate certain targeted groups within their own community on the Al-Anon program of recovery. For the larger communities, such as San Antonio, a coordinated effort between the groups needs to be made so that we are not duplicating our efforts. I AM LOOKING FOR WILLING RECRUITS TO SERVE AS A “POP – Public Outreach Person” for their group to work as a team member. For that purpose, it is my hope to visit each group within the first six months of my term and set up a network … a committee … that will report on what they are doing, what worked and didn’t work, what new ideas and targets they came up with, so I can not only report back to the District but also the Area Public Outreach Coordinator. To that end, there will be a Public Outreach workshop following the District meeting on April 25th. The plan is to get those attendees enthused and armed with ideas on how to impact their community and its relationship with the Al-Anon Fellowship and the resources available to them. I want to work closely with the Area Public Outreach Coordinator and I would very much like to be available after our District meetings to answer any questions or share ideas that the individual groups have brought to my attention.
