Prince Philip Moving Towards JK-8 As some of you may have already heard, Prince Philip along with Parnall, EI McCulley, Lincoln Centennial, and Pine Grove will be moving towards a JK-Gr8 model beginning in September, 2013. The school will be JK-Gr 7 for the 2013/2014 school year and then JK-Gr8 the following
year. Dalewood Public School will be come a French Immersion School only for stu-dents in grades 1-8. We are excited at the prospect of having in-termediates in our building and look for-ward to this change. As further details are worked out, we will be
sure to keep you noti-fied.

Kindergarten Countdown
Do you know a child who’s turning 4 or 5 in 2013? Help them get
ready for their first day of school with the DSBN’s Kindergarten
Countdown. Five easy steps will help parents and new students
get ready to blast off to their first day of school. The countdown
begins in January with a visit to the District School Board of Niag-
ara’s website at www.dsbn.edu.on.ca.
Starting in January, the DSBN website will provide helpful informa-
tion on how to register for Kindergarten, learn more about your local Public School and get
ready for that first big day. Our Open House will be Thursday, February 7th, 2011from 4-
6pm. Please plan on attending!
This year's junior boy's volleyball season was a time of rebuilding. The team was built with only two returning players from last year's squad. As a result, the team had eleven rook-ies, including four students from Grade 4! As the season progressed, the boys showed high levels of grit and tenacity. Although the wins were not coming as frequently as last year, the boys determination made their opponents earn every point they scored. With the possibility of having seven returnees for next year, our chances look rather promising already. Congrats to team members: Jared "fish", Nick "spamalot", Connor "thing 1", Denis "shiner", Ethan "hawk", Dylan "shortstop", Callen "bazinga", Robbie "the kid", Sam "samurai", Chris "lefty", Lucas "smiley", Dalton "mcguinty", and Connor "thing 2" for the great efforts over the course of the season.

There may be times during the school year where inclement weather or other situations could cause transporta-tion cancellations or school closures. At times when student transportation has been cancelled and schools remain open, the decision of whether or not to have children in school on that day rests with the parent or guardian. Should you decide not to send your child to school in the event that transportation is cancelled but schools remain open, or if your child is ill or lat e, please ensure that you call your child’s school to in-form them of your child’s absence. A key resource in any emergency is the DSBN Emergency Information form that you filled out at the beginning of the school year. Please let the school know of any changes in contact information or procedures you wish to be followed throughout the school year. For secondary schools it may become necessary to cancel late buses. Notice will be provided via school an-nouncements and on the websites and subscription features by 11:30 a.m. Information about transportation cancellations and school closures will be available as soon as it is available through the following channels: Websites: www.dsbn.org www.nsts.ca Subscription Features: DSBN Facebook or Twitter NSTS Transportation Delay or Cancellation Alerts Phone: Niagara Student Transportation Services 905-346-0290 Voice Auto Attendant Television Stations: CH—Hamilton City TV Breakfast Television CTV Toronto Cogeco Channel 10 Radio Stations

PALS Program
There is always room for 1 more”. This is the motto for the P.A.L.S. program that is starting up at Prince Philip school. P.A.L.S. stands for Playground Activity Leaders in Schools and is offered in con-nection with the Niag-ara Region Public Health Department. The program encour-ages children to partici-
pate in physical activi-ties, it helps to de-crease conflict on the playground and it pro-vides leadership op-portunities for junior students. Approximately 32 stu-dents from grades 4, 5 and 6 have been se-lected as leaders for the program and are presently receiving
training to learn how to implement the program. Leaders will organize and run games during the fitness portion of our breaks several times each week. We antici-pate the program will start in the new year.

Did you know that Canadian
children/youth ages six to
19 spend an average of 8.6
hours per day, or 62 per
cent of their waking hours,
being sedentary? Here are
some ways to help your chil-
dren meet the recom-
mended 60 minutes of mod-
erate-to-vigorous physical
activity each day:
Limit recreational screen
time to no more than two
hours per day
Encourage children to play
outdoors
Play outside with your
children:
Go for walks, hikes, build
snowmen, go tobogganing
Introduce your child to
skates or skis so they can
learn to slide
Play catching games using
a wide range of soft ob-
jects
