  • DISTRICT ROTARACT REPRESENTATIVE MESSAGE Its conference month and the Rotaract Clubs of Barbados are

hard at work to ensure that our 29th Annual Rotaract District

Conference is executed successfully. Although there have

been challenges experienced by those registered, you are all

asked to be patient with the planning committee as they seek

to address all concerns raised. Each conference presents a

new experience and at times new challenges. Understanding

the existence of these challenges and how to adjust to them can

make a big difference in the enjoyment of your conference

    experience.

In April I was fortunate to be a guest of the District Governor at

the Rotary District 7030 Conference in Suriname. During the

conference I made a presentation to the Rotarians present on

the work of the Rotaract District for the year thus far, as well

provided recommendations for improving the relationship

between Rotaract and Rotary. The presentation also

highlighted the importance of Rotary Clubs supporting their

Rotaract Clubs through sufficient guidance and financial assistance to attend training. The feedback

from Rotarians after the presentation was very positive and it is hoped that this was just a small step in

an overall improvement of the relationship among clubs.

The time in Suriname was also spent meeting with the Rotaract Clubs in that country. Although most

Rotaractors were involved in the execution of the Rotary Conference, they were still able to schedule

meetings with me to discuss their clubs activities, challenges and plans for the next Rotaract year.

Social interactions were also incorporated as part of the overall conference activities. At this time I

wish to commend the excellent work and professionalism of the Rotaractors in Suriname as they

portrayed true Rotary spirit in the way they performed their duties for the duration of the conference.

The Rotarians present were also very pleased and it is hoped that the experience also brought them

closer as clubs and members of the Rotary family.

  • In addition to the three clubs in Suriname, I also visited the newly chartered Rotaract Club of

Felicity/Charlieville. As part of this visit I volunteered at an outreach clinic with members of the club

in south Trinidad. It was an eye-opening experience for me as I was actively involved in measuring

patients blood pressure levels to determine if they were at risk of suffering from heart complications.

Finally I ended the month very close to home with a visit with the President of the Rotaract Club of

    South West Tobago.

As I write this message I am waiting to board a flight to visit five clubs in three islands over the course

of one week. This will be immediately followed by visits to some clubs in Trinidad before my return

to Tobago. I anticipate a very exciting and rewarding trip and look forward to interacting with the

Rotaractors of these countries. The Rotaract year is quickly coming to a close and so is my term as

your DRR. With less than two months to go I have begun reflecting on the work of the District thus far

and therefore preparing notes that will aid DRR Elect Giselle Holder in her term as DRR 2015-2016. It

continues to be a pleasure serving you and I look forward to interacting with all of you in Barbados

    later this month.

    Yours in Rotaract,

    Vanessa Boyce

  • ROTARY INTERNATIONAL FOCUS

    Rotary Convention- House of Friendship

One of my favorite parts of a Rotary convention is

the House of Friendship. In Chinese, we say:

. "To have friends come together from faraway places is a wonderful

    thing."

At the 106th annual Rotary International

Convention, 6-9 June, the House of Friendship will

reflect the excitement and the diverse blend of

cultures of So Paulo, the host city.

In between general sessions, you can relax and

enjoy all that Brazil has to offer sample the cuisine, browse locally made gifts, and take in

top-quality entertainment. You also can get ideas

for service and find partners at booths showcasing

Rotary projects and Rotarian Action Groups. And

best of all, you'll have the opportunity to spend time with old friends and make many new ones.

The House of Friendship is a wonderful place to bring your convention guests your family and your

friends from home. By attending conventions with me, my family experienced the true internationality

of Rotary. Eventually my wife, Corinna, and all three of my children joined Rotary clubs. You and your

guests will want to be sure to come early for World Water Summit 7, on 4 June, sponsored by the

Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group, or for the Rotary Peace Symposium, 4-5 June.

This year we are honored that Dr. Oscar Arias, former president of Costa Rica, will be the keynote

speaker at the Rotary Peace Symposium. Arias received the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering a peace

agreement that ended the brutal civil wars in Central America.

Other events 4-5 June include the Rotaract Preconvention Meeting, the International Institute, and the

    Youth Exchange Officers Preconvention Meeting.

When the convention is over, spend time exploring all that Brazil has to offer pristine beaches just a

few hours away, the excitement and glamour of Rio de Janeiro, and the wonders of the Amazon rain

    forest.

Every year, I return from the Rotary convention inspired to do more, to give more in Rotary service

throughout the year. Register today at www.riconvention.org. I look forward to seeing you in So

    Paulo!

  • CLUB STORIES

  • ROTARACT CLUB OF ARIMA

Rotaract Club of Arima goes to South Park Cinemas 10 Movie Lime

In order to maintain and strengthen the bonds amongst the Membership of the Rotaract Club of Arima

and its associates, the Club decided to spend some time together engaging in the popular past-time

    that is movie watching.

Therefore, on Saturday 28th February 2015, Members of the Rotaract Club of Arima, along with

Members of the Rotaract Club of San Fernando, went to South Park Cinemas 10 Cineplex, Tarouba

Link Road, San Fernando, in Trinidad to fellowship and share the experience of viewing Kingsman:

The Secret Service. The Clubs contingent journeyed to the Southland where we were greeted by

their fellow Rotaractors from the Rotaract Club of San Fernando in front of the new establishment at

3:00 p.m. for the 4:00 p.m. movie. While awaiting the start of the movie, Members took that

opportunity to interact and get to know each other while purchasing refreshments. The movie lived

up to all its hype and expectations and was well enjoyed by all Rotaractors. After the movie, the

group gathered for photos / selfies and then journeyed back to our respective homes safely. Indeed,

this activity enabled us to go beyond our jurisdiction and build a relationship with Rotaractors outside

our club while we fully Share their Experience in the Life and Spirit that is Rotaract in keeping with the

    Districts current theme!

  • Rotaract Club of Arima hosts its inaugural Aerobathon with Police Youth Clubs

On Saturday 11th April 2015, the Rotaract Club of Arima facilitated its first ever Aerobathon with over

eighty-five (85) Members of the Santa Rosa/Pinto Road, Dinsley/Trincity and St. Joseph Police Youth

    Clubs and their Leaders.

This was done right after the Health Education Session, which was held in conjunction with the

Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Health's Health Education Division (HED).

The Warm-up was led by President Daniel Skinner-Ballantyne, with Professional Service Director

Alana Holder, PRO Darcel George and Rotaractor April Farrell leading various segments of the

Aerobics Burnout Competition and the Cool-down session, along with a couple of the Police Youth

Club Leaders. Male and Female winners, along with the second and third place finishers, were

adjudged in three (3) age categories: 6-10, 11-14 and 15-18. They were awarded with trophies and

    medals.

  • Rotaract Club of Arima hosts Health Educational session in collaboration with

the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Health

On Saturday 11th April 2015, the Rotaract Club of Arima, in conjunction with the Trinidad and Tobago

Ministry of Health's Health Education Division (HED), facilitated the Health Educational Session with

the Members of the Santa Rosa/Pinto Road, Dinsley/Trincity and St. Joseph Police Youth Clubs.

This component of the project also coincided with the Ministrys continuing Like Yuhself

Programme which is geared towards the healthy, holistic development of adolescents and youths in

    society.

The presenter, Ms. Cherice Bronte-Tinkew, a Programme Officer of the HED, hosted an informative

and interactive educational session which was geared towards informing the Members of the Police

Youth Clubs as well as the Rotaract Club of Arima about healthier lifestyle choices which can be made

    to reduce Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD's).

Focus was placed on the ill-effects of an unhealthy diet and physical inactivity and conversely on the

benefits of a healthy diet and regular physical activity/exercise.

At least eighty-five (85) Members of the Santa Rosa/Pinto Road, Dinsley/Trincity and St. Joseph Police

Youth Clubs stood to benefit directly from this Educational Session, which was held before the

Aerobics Burnout phase of the Aerobathon.

  • ROTARACT CLUB OF F.R.E.SH. If they cant learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn: AUTISM

The abovementioned sentence was the theme of our autism project

on 28 April, 2015. As we all know, 2 April is marked by the United

    Nations as World Autism Awareness Day. With regard to that day;

the heartwarming request of DG Elwin Atmodimedjo and in

addition to the launching of the nationwide Autism platform by the

Rotary Clubs in Suriname, International and Community service

contributed by giving a lecture about autism.

We selected 50 primary schools in and around Paramaribo who all

delegated two teachers to attend the lecture. Two professionals, a

speech therapist & remedial educationalist, informed them what autism is, the negative and positive

symptoms, the development of positive symptoms into being the best children they can be in class

but also in other social interactions, tips on how to support their classroom management, visualizing a

teachers technique and so much more. The opportunity was given to ask questions to the panel,

consisting of the 2 before mentioned professionals and a neuropsychologist. In four words: good

questions, good response. We also provided our guests with water bottles which was labeled with

our own autism theme and logo. At the end every school was provided two autism posters and a

    brochure.

The Rotaract club of F.R.E.S.H. received a district award for supporting DG Elwin in autism

    awareness.

  • Water is health. Clean hands can save your life.

With regard to World Water Day on 22 March 2015 and supporting the Rotary in their area of focus,

the International Service avenue of Rotaract club of F.R.E.S.H. celebrated on the 22 and 30 March 2015

a little project where we promoted clean water.

With a total of 3 Rotaractors and 3 friends of F.R.E.S.H., they placed water housings and filters in the

central city of Paramaribo. At an elderly home, called Majella, where 80 live, we placed 8 new filters

and we also cleaned the housing of the water filters. The water filters from this home were very old

and unclean, so we removed it and now produces clean water from the tap again. Furthermore, we

placed 1 water filter with housing at a primary school called O.S. Kuldiphsingh (with 300 students).

This school did not have a water filter, so children drank water that came right from the tank to the

tap. Why did we do this? Because water is essential to human health and doing everything with clean

water is one of the best ways to remove germs; to make a difference for the members of the global

population who suffer from water related issues and to improve sanitation facilities.

  • ROTARACT CLUB OF GENESIS

    Bake Sale

On the 7th of February 2015 Rotaract Club Genesis organized their bake sale. It was held at Choi

Supermarket from 8.00a.m till 1.00p.m. We sold savoury snacks, cakes, pancakes, cupcakes and to

get that thirsty away we also sold juice and a delicious Surinamese ginger beer. First we set up

everything and put all things nice and extra delicious looking for our customers.

Despite the low participation of the club, we managed to succeed at this sale, we were almost sold

out. Besides selling our products, we had great conversations with our costumer. Our main goal was

to raise money for our District Community Project, Get Fit With The Kidz, and besides that to

promote the club. The costumers were really happy to support the sport day with kids. Both goals

were achieved and now we are extra motivated to execute a bake sale bigger and better the next

    time.

  • Get Fit With The Kidz

On the 14th of March, during the World Rotaract Week, we choose to have a playful sport day with

kids of three childrens homes. The time was 8.00 am.-13.00 pm. We stimulate a healthy community

and thats why we choose to Get Fit With The Kidz. We received a lot of donation from a couple of

companies and individuals. The Get Fit With The Kidz project was a very big project because we

    had over 85 children.

The goals of this project were: 1) to encourage the children to do more sports exercise; 2) to have a

fun and playful day with them; 3) to celebrate World Rotaract Week with the community (children)

and 4) to promote the club.

On the day of the project President Rino of our sponsor club Rotary Paramaribo Central and District

Governor Elwin Admodimedjo motivated the children to always participate in sports. The children

enjoyed themselves and we had a lot of media attentions. The Interact club Triple T and a basketball

group also supported us on that day with the games. We are very pleased of the outcome.

  • GeneF.R.E.S.H.ious Hawaiian Theme Party

On the 28th of March 2015 Rotaract Club Genesis and Rotaract Club F.R.E.S.H. had a joint project

named GeneF.R.E.S.H.ious Hawaiian Theme Party. The goals of this project were to have a fun get

together, getting to know each other better and working on our teambuilding through some games.

We began the night with charades where we were divided in 2 teams.

After that we had dinner in a lovely group setting. Afterwards we had the limbo dance and a hula

hoop competition. The last official game for the night was

called people machine where we were divided in 3

groups. Each team made themselves into a machine

that has motion and sound, and included all team

members. The teams took turns presenting and

guessing each other machines. Some of the fellows

also brought their swimwear and went in the pool

after the games. After the night formally ended, we

limed a little bit. We had a lot of fun and took a lot of

pictures. We can look back at a fun and successful

    project.

  • ROTARACT CLUB OF GRENADA

World Water Day Initiative (March 22nd 2015)

The international Service Committee of the

Rotaract Club of Grenada and the Rotaract Club

of South-east Nassau Centennial raised funds to

in light of World Water Day 2015. This was chosen

as our twin project as we wanted to make an

    impact outside of our borders.

Both clubs embarked on various fundraising

efforts. In the end the Rotaract Club of Grenada

raised $1795.00 XCD and the Rotaract Club of

Centennial $395.00 US. Together the funds were

sent to the Rotary Club of Des Cayes to be

forwarded to the Rotaract Club of Des Cayes in Haiti.

These Rotaractors were tasked with executing a community service project to assist members of the

Haitian community in accessing cleaner and safer water. The recipients of this initiative were the

communities of Chantal and Des Cayes

who received water, food items, water

sanitation products and information on how

    to sanitize water.

While the excess rain on the day made it

difficult for the truck to deliver the water

and other items to the assigned

    destination, the Rotaractors persevered

and were even given a helping hand by

members of the community. Their work

was a true example of service above self!

  • ROTARACT CLUB OF POINTE-A-PITRE

    Speedworking

This year again, the Rotaract Club of Pointe--Pitre organized its annual Speedworking. It took place

on Saturday, April 18th in Pointe--Pitre. For this 5th edition, the professional development committee

wanted to innovate by offering entrepreneurs and project managers of Guadeloupe the opportunity

to take part to a forum where they could to meet with professionals, to share their experience and to

revive counselling for free. This was an excellent opportunity for them to improve their projects.

At the same time, a competition was held and 10 young project managers presented their projects in

front of a professional jury. The candidates had 10 minutes to defend their project and to answer

    questions from the jury.

At the end of the competition, the three best projects won a prize. And exceptionally, this year, the

jury rewarded two additional entrepreneurs with 2 special prize. Last but not least, we are very

pleased to announce, that Stephane Martial, a past Rotaractor, won the 1st prize with his business

    partner.

This edition was a great success!

  • 2015 ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

In Rotary, we have the opportunity to build bonds of friendship with

fellow Rotarians around the world. And once a year, at our

international convention, we have the chance to get together with all

of our Rotary friends, to share new ideas, plan new service, and just

    have fun.

What better way to celebrate the end of the 2014-15 Rotary year, and

Light Up Rotary with your friends, than to travel together to the 106th

annual Rotary International Convention in So Paulo, Brazil? Whether

you have never been to a convention before or are an experienced

convention goer, this will be one you won't want to miss.

Preregistration pricing ends on 31 March, so plan now for the biggest Rotary party of the year.

The convention will begin on Saturday, 6 June, and after the opening ceremony there will be a

traditional Brazilian Carnival party and a Samba School Parade at the Anhembi Sambadrome. Even if

you think you have no rhythm or can't carry a tune, you will find yourself dancing, singing, and

laughing all night long. The party and parade will feature the bright colours, feathers, and sequins of

Carnival costumes as well as the sights and sounds of samba, the Afro-Brazilian music and dance, and

the delicious food and drinks of So Paulo.

On Monday night, Ivete Sangalo, winner of two Latin Grammy Awards, will entertain Rotarians. And

every evening of the convention, Rotary Restaurant Nights will let you enjoy discounts in the culinary

capital of Latin America. Savor fish from the Amazon, sushi with a Latin flair, Brazilian beef, and other

offerings from some of So Paulo's 30,000 restaurants and bars. Admission to several museums in So

Paulo, including the excellent soccer museum, will also be free with your convention badge.

Brazil reflects a diversity almost as great as Rotary's: Paulistanos, as the people of So Paulo are

known, have created a lively culture with influences from all over the world. One of the highlights of

any Rotary convention is always hospitality night, where you can get to know local Rotarians. Monday

night is your chance to experience the paulistano lifestyle with the Rotarians of Brazil but be sure to

book early, as numbers are limited.

In Rotary, service and friendship go hand in hand. As you focus on the work of this Rotary year, I ask

you not to lose sight of the importance of international friendship, and to register for the So Paulo

    convention now, at www.riconvention.org.
