Ryan, Acting District Attorney of Queens County, it is my pleasure to invite your law school to apply to participate in the Queens County District Attorney’s 6 th Annual Mock Trial Competition. This competition allows law students the unique opportunity to try a criminal case, under New York law, before sitting Supreme Court justices and Criminal Court judges. This is an excellent opportunity for students to get practical experience under conditions close to a real New York criminal trial, and should be particularly appealing to those students interested in pursuing careers as prosecutors. In fact, each year we hire several participants from our competition as assistant district attorneys, while others have gone on to careers in other prosecutor’s offices in the New York City area and elsewhere. In this year’s competition, sitting trial judges will preside over each trial. Police Officers and recruits from the NYC Police Academy will serve as jurors during the trials. Management staff and experienced trial attorneys from the Queens County District Attorney’s Office, as well as experienced criminal defense attorneys, will serve as evaluators. The competition will be held at the Queens County Courthouse, located in Kew Gardens, New York, on October 19 and 20, 2019. It will consist of two preliminary rounds held on Saturday, October 19, among the 16 teams selected. A reception will be held on Saturday evening, October 19, at which time the six advancing teams will be announced. The semi-final round will be held on Sunday morning, October 20, and the final round will be held in the afternoon of October 20. The Honorable Joseph A. Zayas, Administrative Judge of the Supreme Court, Criminal Term, Queens County, will preside at the final round. The competition fee is $400 and is due upon acceptance. The fact pattern will be released approximately 5 weeks prior to the start of the competition. Teams will consist of four advocates, two for the prosecution and two for the defense. Students not advocating will serve as witnesses for their team. Please see the attached flyer for further details. Please return the attached entry form via e-mail to James Quinn, Senior Executive Assistant District Attorney, Trial Division, at [email protected], no later than June 1, 2019. We plan to announce the competing teams by June 15, 2019. The attached flyer has more details.
