Rotary Club of Vereeniging: Vereeniging to
Durban Cycle Tour
The very popular and ongoing project the ‘Vereeniging to Durban
Cycle Tour" of the RC of Vereeniging, was held in October for the
16th year in succession. 20 Cyclists and 2 Service Crew members
entered the ride, but unfortunately there was one withdrawal due to
a fall.
Reitz was the first stop. But two weeks before the tour started the 9
bedroomed complex burnt down! They cyclists were never told but
as they say" ‘n Boer maak ‘n plan". The alternative
accommodation was comfortable little wooden chalets on the
property and the kitchen was operated from a caravan and tent
with the necessary gas utilities.
Thereafter, the cyclists stayed at Little Switzerland Resort on the
border of KZN, on top of the Oliviers Hoek pass and the Willow
Grange Hotel. On day four the group stayed with local Rotarians in
Pietermaritzburg - they were excellent hosts!
They arrived in Durban on the final
day(5) at the Moses Mabhida
soccer stadium. A short ride to the
Berea soccer stadium for photos
and Bunny Chows and they shared
all the tours’ ‘war’ stories.
The funds raised by this cycle tour
are used for various community
projects.

The Rotaract Club of Mbabane-Mbuluzi, Swaziland is embarking of a very ambitious, innovative and exciting project; the Malindza-Youth Empowerment centre at Malindza refugee centre. This centre is designed by the Rotaracts using discarded shipping containers and recycled soft drink cans for the roof structure. The design has paid close attention to issues of sustainability: Environmental, Economical and Social sustainability. This centre houses numerous programs: Art-Studio, Music/Dance-Studio, Training-rooms, ablutions, computer-lab, game-room, study and resource-centre. The club would like to further partner with UNHCR, for this centre to become a prototype for similar centers across the African continent. For the Rotary family this project will encourage peace and conflict resolution and due to its magnitude, it will in-crease awareness of Ro-taract and Rotary. We would like to partner with you, on this project and help assure its success. Thank-you, Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information. Andrew Muwonge(President) [email protected]

RC of Three Rivers works hard
for the community
On 14 November, World Diabetes Day, the Club provided medical
services to the community of Boiketlong when testing and
counselling services were available for HIV and AIDS, Diabetes,
TB and Blood Pressure testing. Various local NGO’s together
with Ward Co-ordinators from Emfuleni Council and Sedibeng
Health Department joined in this partnership to reach some 250
residents of the area.
At the end of November Rotarians and friends of the RC of Three
Rivers distributed 135 Shoe-Box Christmas Gifts to children from
two Pre-Schools in Sicelo (see photographs) The children were
delighted to welcome Father Christmas on his trailer as he
travelled through Sicelo to bring useful gifts lovingly provided by
friends and families in the Vereeniging community. These are a
few of the PEARLS the Club continues to bring as they practice
SERVICE ABOVE SELF. Keep on discovering and producing

PAYMENT CHANGES AS FROM JANUARY 2015
Please note the following changes made by RI re payment of RI Dues.
January clubs will receive a new simple invoice from Rotary. The balance owing will reflect the
membership data in Rotary’s database on 1 January 2015. CLUBS WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO
ADJUST THE BALANCE after receiving the invoice. It is therefore crucial that club officers
report membership changes as they occur in order that they are billed correctly.
If you are unable to report membership changes on-line complete the membership data form and e-mail it to : [email protected] or Fax it to 001-847-556-2207.
Also make sure that your membership, and any changes, be made timeously in order to avoid clubs
having to pay for more members than what you have.
CELEBRATE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL’S ANNIVERSARY DURING THE MONTH OF
FEBRUARY 2015….. Below are a few suggestions………………. Decades ago, to be precise, 11 of them, Rotary was formed on 23 February 1905 in
Chicago by four professionals. Today we have over 1,2m Rotarians offering humanitarian
service in over 200 countries. So how can we celebrate Rotary’s special anniversary?
A long cake or pizza measuring 110 cms (just over a meter for your local project) or 110 feet (about 33
mts for a large community project) and do it in a zigzag fashion with the Rotary wheel etc and if this is
done on a shopping mall then we would get great exposure and then cut the cake/pizza and share it
with everyone. Any left-overs can go to the orphanages or old age homes. You could get the cake
sponsored or you could ask each club in the area to contribute…or get partial sponsorship and also ask
the clubs to sponsor…or take it out of our PR budgets in each district. This should attract extensive
media exposure…and include your social media areas. Each club to bake a Rotary cake with 110 candles on it…do this during your club meeting during the
week of 23 February. Ask club members, collectively, to offer 110 minutes of community service (or 110 hours collectively)
during February. Ask everyone to contribute 110 of your currency to the Foundation for Polio – encourage your friends
and family to do the same. Ask clubs to prepare 110 packs of sweets and food for kids at school - multiple packs of 110 can also be
done. Ask clubs to make 110 meals for the poor. Donate 110 books to a school library. Hand out 110 stationery packs/toys or anything else that you can think of to needy scholars. Hand out 110 pairs of Toms Shoes and socks to the needy. New stock is available now. Organise a great meal and ask your club members to invite 110 non-Rotarians as their guest and
celebrate what Rotary is about during your event. Feed a 110 street people / needy people Live the Four-way test for 110 hours / days (no exceptions) Spend 110 minutes with a disadvantaged person.
Share your favourite Rotary story or experience since you joined. Put it on all the social media you are
linked with and tell your fellow club members at a dedicated evening celebrating Rotary.
Post all your events on your website, Facebook, Twitter and any other social media you
belong to. Send your event article and photos ROTA Magazine too.
Celebrate with style, share this great news and invite as many people to share the 110 years
of the Rotary memory lane.
