My wife, and fellow Rotarian, Tracy and I have hosted 3+ exchange students, been to 4 Rotary Inter-national conventions (all in North America), and are both PHFs committed to Rotary.

Outside of Rotary we are involved in several com-munity groups so, though retired, are both very busy and happy to be so! We have 3 adult children and 3 grandchildren (Max 8, Jackson 7, Lucy 5). Tracy taught Special Ed. and then reading in the Dry-den High school for 20 years. The last 16 months have been different and difficult, so I want to acknowledge PDGs Dave Bensley & Matt Adler for their efforts. Rotary District 7170 Newsletter | July 2021

2021-2022 promises to be better, but different, with many opportunities to grow and strengthen our clubs. Most Dis-trict committee meetings will remain virtual, and many clubs are adopting hybrid formats allowing more flexibility. This flexibility will help to engage members, recruit new mem-bers, and provide opportunities to hear speakers from all over the world. I believe most in Rotary know we will be not going back to “normal” as we move forward.

RI President Shekhar Mehta gave us our theme for the year, “Serve to Change Lives”, which speaks to us all as Rotari-ans. Regarding his spe-cific charges, Shekhar wants to grow Rotary and challenges us with ‘Each one, Bring One’. That would take us from 1.2 to 2.4 million Rotari-ans! Shekhar is a realist so his actual goal is for RI membership to be 1.3 million at the end of this Rotary year! Bring a friend, a neighbor, a family member, or a col-league. Engage them with the ‘new’ Rotary by sending them a Zoom link for a program they may enjoy or invite them to a social. The second charge from our RI President is the support of women and girls. Our world benefits most when women are empowered so we should look for ways to support the many needed changes.

So, what will our District focus be? First, communication. Why? Rotarians who are engaged with District and other Rotarians in their region will be exposed to more ideas and more opportunities for service. They will be more aware of Rotary in the greater world. How? Be sure your contact in-formation is up to date on the District ClubRunner. Your club secretary should be able to help you with this. Look at, and use, the list of “Upcoming District Events” on the Dis-trict home page (scroll past the latest news…). Respond in a timely manner to communications regarding Rotary and share freely and widely. Communications are a two-way street!

Secondly, we need to work on Diversity, Equity, and Inclu-sion (DEI). Rotary will be stronger and can serve the world better if we are more diverse, equal, and inclusive. These properties will benefit us by providing more insight into is-sues, bringing more skills & experiences to bear, more hands to lighten the work, and perhaps best of all, more friends!

We cannot just say we are not racist, sexist, or any of the other inherent biases we all have. We need to work at being anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic, as well as to pay attention to the many other aspects of diversity such as age, gender, education, economic status, etc. This is uncomfort-able territory and significant self-reflection is required but the results will benefit all. District 7170 is in the process of establishing a DEI committee; please contact me if you are interested.

Third and most important is our new Area of Focus, ‘Sup-porting the Environment’. In my opinion Rotary missed an opportunity by not calling it ‘Supporting OUR Environ-ment’ because it really is our home, our life support sys-tem…there is no Planet B! Every other area of focus is being negatively impacted by climate change. Everything we as Rotarians do ties to our environment. It is imperative that Rotary engage in mitigating the coming storm. Much more on this in the coming year!

Do not look to me for specific directions over the next year… my expectation is that District chairs, committee members, club Presidents, and all Rotarians know what ac-tions need to be taken and have the ability to do so. We Ro-tarians helping at the District level are here to guide, to co-ordinate, and to cheerlead, not to direct or dictate. We Ro-tarians are People of Action, who do not sit and wait for someone to tell them, or ask them, what to do next.

I very much look forward to working with you in the coming months as we follow our Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self’. Regards, DG Evan

New polio eradication plan

We had great news last August when Af-rica was declared Polio free. COVID then stalled our ongoing eradication efforts. Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the last two nations with wild polio virus.

A new, five-billion-dollar cooperative ef-fort was just announced. Click the following link for a sum-mary of the new effort, as well as a report on how the exist-ing infrastructure was used to battle COVID.

As this Rotary year comes to a close, we want to thank you for supporting The Rotary Foundation!

Thanks to you, more Rotary members in your community and around the world have been able to take action and make an impact. Your support of our Foundation meant more projects were possible, more peo-ple were served, and more problems were solved.

Because of dedicated donors like you, our Foundation has awarded over 1,900 global grants totaling more than $139 million so far this Rotary year. Together with our partners, we’ve immunized nearly 3 billion children against polio since 1988. Rotary members around the world continue working to keep their communities healthy and safe from diseases like COVID-19.

We raised $6K for PolioPlus!

Our District’s 2nd Annual ‘7 Runs, 7 Counties, 7 Days' se-ries of events raised $6,105 for PolioPlus. About 31 Ro-tarians, from 14 of our District's 44 clubs, participated by walking, running, setting up, or donating, during the 7 con-secutive days of events from June 20th thru 26th.

The intended result of this series of events is twofold: Raise money for PolioPlus during the 7 days and get Ro-tarians together. The clubs in each of our District’s 7 coun-ties (Delaware, Otsego, Chenango, Tioga, Cortland, Broome, Tompkins) were to work together to plan, pro-mote, setup, and execute an event of their choice. Thanks

to the folks in Delaware, Broome, and Cortland counties for their help! Hopefully in 2022 we can get more partici-pation by clubs so more Rotarians can enjoy each other companies and reach a goal of $10,000 for PolioPlus!

In 2022 we will try make the events more social (food & drink) as more Rotarians are likely to participate. If you have any ideas or would like to help in your county please feel free to step up.

Thanks go to the Rotarians from the following clubs for their support and participation. Binghamton, Binghamton Breakfast, Cortland, Cortland Breakfast, Dryden, Endicott, Endwell, Owego, Sherburne, Stamford, Johnson City, Greene, Edmeston, Schenevus-Worcester, Ithaca.

Goody bag delivery to fifth graders

For the 5th year, The Rotary Club of Binghamton recog-nized seven fifth graders - one from each of the seven elementary schools in Bing-hamton - as Student of the Year 2021. These students were chosen by their teachers and administrators as models of cooperation, collaboration, respect, and engagement. They were recognized as they consistently have gone out of their way to assist others and are a model of positive attitude as they set the tone for their classes. In some cases, they have improved dramatically in academics or behavior and have achieved in spite of obstacles and challenges.

They received a certificate of merit as well as a bag filled with candies, college memorabilia, pens and pencils, puz-zles, and more. Congratulatory letters from their school su-perintendent, Tonia Thompson, and President of Bingham- ton Rotary, Brian Jester, were included as well as $10 gift certificates from Lupos and Subway.

Many thanks to Frances Traficante, Linda Biemer, Cindy Burger, Vikki Collazo, Paul Pool, Brian Jester, Sharon Chesna and Lana Rouff in making this happen.

Ithaca Sunrise Rotary

We held it together since everything shut down in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In early-April we be-gan meeting via Zoom like many other clubs and organiza-tions. At the time, way before “Zoom fatigue” began to set in, it was a joy to see virtual faces following a few weeks of shutdown quarantine. Thanks to a combination of club mem-ber generosity and a modest club reserve, we were able to put into motion a few initiatives.

Loaves and Fishes – April 2020 As the pandemic took hold in the spring of 2020, we wanted to help a local food organization during this uncertain and challenging time. We made a one-time contribution of $500.00 to Loaves and Fishes of Tompkins County in sup-port of their efforts to provide food to those who need it most during this COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

Adopt-a-Family Program – December 2020 The Adopt-A-Family program is for those low income and struggling families that are facing a severe economic, emo-tional, or physical crisis around the holidays. It is one of our annual projects with the Salvation Army. This year we spon-sored a single parent with 1-year-old. Through member do-nations, we collected about $250.00 and purchased a selec-tion of toys, books, clothes, and non-perishable food items that had been requested by the family. These items were de-livered in mid-December 2020.

India COVID Relief Project – May 2021 As news spread about the COVID crisis in India earlier this year, we partnered with the Rotary Club of Eastwood and raised a total of $2050.00 via individual member donations and a club matching contribution for a combined total of do-nation of $10,000. These funds were raised for the purchase and shipment of oxygen concentrators to benefit patients in Bangalore and the surrounding rural area, where assistance is currently needed the most. Visit https://www.face-book.com/aarogyaseva for updates on this effort.

Johnson City Rotary

President Ken Wilcox received a message, from a friend that fellow Johnson City Rotarian Frank and Darlene Bianco were asking if he knew of any landscaping people as they needed the front of their home redone. Frank is a long-standing member of Rotary, a WWII veteran and was re-cently admitted into a nursing home for dementia.

Ken’s focus for the last two years as President of JC Rotary has been “Service Above Self”. Seeing an opportunity, he asked our members if they would like to do this as a service project for our fellow Rotarian.

The response was overwhelmingly "YES".

On June 19th, eight JC Rotarians showed up at Frank and Darlene‘s home and in a matter of three hours they pulled weeds, planted bushes and flowers and spread mulch. Dar-lene was overwhelmed that we would do such a task. This was completed in less than two weeks from the original re-quest from Darlene. Rotarians ARE People of Action.

Owego Rotary

Rotary has been a partner with ShelterBox in disaster relief since 2012. The partnership extends beyond financial sup-port and around 1,000 Rotary members are involved with ShelterBox as volunteers, staff, or response team members. Rotary is involved in the planning stages and final evalua-tions of disaster support. Rotary members help ShelterBox make community contacts, organize logistics, and reach

disaster-affected families in remote areas, often those that are overlooked by others, to reach vulnerable people in need of life-saving shelter and supplies.

ShelterBox is a specialist in providing emergency shelter for persons displaced due to natural disaster and by providing the essential tools needed to help rebuild homes as quickly as possible after disaster. ShelterBox puts families first by asking communities and families what they most need to support their own recovery after disaster. After a response, an evaluation is made of the provided aid by talking to, and learning from, the families who use it.

ShelterBox is extremely focused on Syria and Africa but provides assistance all over the world. I will be glad to give a Zoom presentation to District 7170 Clubs.

Trumansburg Rotary

Despite the challenges of the pandemic months, Trumans-burg Rotary, “The Little Club that Could,” held together via weekly Zoom meetings, and even attracted some new and enthusiastic members.

As COVID-19 numbers faded in our county, we renewed our annual Supermarket Sweepstakes and ran our first-ever Rubber Duck Race, both of them popular and successful; our members and friends were just so eager to get out of the house and have some safe fun, and our local ShurSave su-permarket was generous in letting us spend weeks in their entryway hawking tickets. Working with local volunteers, we completed a tree-planting project at the Trumansburg Fairgrounds, a project sidetracked for a year by the pan-demic.

We’re looking forward to offering our golf classic: Tburg Rotary 21st Annual Golf Classic NEW THIS YEAR: Cash prizes for top 3 teams!

Friday, July 9, 2021 Shotgun start at 8:30am Trumansburg Golf Club 23 Halsey Street Trumansburg, NY

Late Registration July 1 - July 9, 2021 $90 per golfer / $340 per team

Visit www.tburgrotarygolf.com for more details and to register.

Questions? Contact Mary Guy-Sell at [email protected]

Finally, we’re back to meeting in person at Trumansburg’s American Legion Hall, cooking dinners for one another, and working with the Legion to develop hybrid meeting ca-pabilities. Look for our Rotary Chicken Barbecues the third Saturday of each month through October in the Atlas Bowl parking lot on Tburg’s Main Street! -Peggy Haine | [email protected]

Vestal Rotary

Vestal Rotary celebrated outgoing president Ethan Cook as he passed the gavel to incoming president Bill Scannell. The club was honored by the presence of DGE Rocky Martinez.

Ethan has done a remarkable job leading the club through the past challenging year adapting with innovative ideas. He did so during a year full of personal excitement including his wedding, a job pro-motion, the start of a career for his wife and the adoption of a four-legged addition to his family.

Ethan exemplifies service above self. Well done and congratula-tions, Ethan!

-Bill Scannell
