You're a Grand Old Flag
You're a grand old flag,You're a high flying flagAnd forever in peace may you wave. You're the emblem ofThe land I love. The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true'neath the Red, White and Blue,Where there's never a boast or brag.Should auld acquaintance be forgot,Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
From www.wikipedia.com: "You're a Grand Old Flag", a spirited march written by George M. Cohan, is a tribute to the U.S. flag. Cohan wrote it in 1906 for George Washington, Jr., his stage musical. The title and first lyric comes from someone Cohan once met; the Library of Congress website notes:
The original lyric... came, as Cohan later explained, from an encounter he had with a Civil War veteran who fought at Gettysburg. The two men found themselves next to each other and Cohan noticed the vet held a carefully folded but ragged old flag. The man reportedly then turned to Cohan and said, "She's a grand old rag." Cohan thought it was a great line and originally named his tune "You're a Grand Old Rag." So many groups and individuals objected to calling the flag a "rag," however, that he "gave 'em what they wanted" and switched words, renaming the song "You're a Grand Old Flag."

Program: Video, Dr. Anne Matthews July is Literacy Month
From www.rotary.org: In 1985, Rotary declared basic literacy to be a pre-condition to the development of peace. Through this organizational emphasis, more than half the world’s 33,000 Rotary clubs address the full range of literacy and mathematical challenges for primary, vocational, and adult learners as well as teacher training. Many Rotary club members promote what is termed "lighthouse" literacy projects – those that can be replicated easily, thereby increasing the scope of their impact.
Dr. Anne Matthews: Video from March, 2012 Lone Star PETS
Dr. Anne Matthews is president of Matthews and Associates, an educational firm in Columbia, South Carolina. She has earned three degrees, is an educator by profession, an author of business texts, and a public speaker. She received two appointments from President Ronald Reagen. Anne has spoken in all 50 states and 26 foreign counties on educational issues and/or The Rotary Foundation. Anne has served Rotary in several capacities, including as Trustee of The Rotary Foundation 2010-12, and is presently the Rotary International Director for Zones 33 and 34.
Message from District 5910 Governor Brenda Walker
Throughout District 5910 our clubs have completed officer installations and are now busy preparing for fund raisers and service projects in order to carry out the time honored tradition of Service Above Self. Some of our proceeds will be donated to The Rotary Foundation which exists to assist us in delivering humanitarian and educational services both home and abroad. I am pleased to announce our clubs have collectively committed to an overall goal of $209,490 to the annual program fund and $40,000 for Polio Plus in 2012-2013. There is no doubt we will exceed this goal!
