Rotary District 5650 March 2011—Governor’s Newsletter—[email protected]

“Think about major projects, because that’s what gives Ro-
tarians pride in their club, and if those projects also are visible in the community, people be-come interested in Rotary and
join, if asked. If you get that cycle going, clubs will be big-
ger, better, and bolder.” - RI President,
Ray Klinginsmith

Dear Rotarians, The count down has begun to “B” Rotary at The District Conference!
Registration form is attached- Deadline is April 16th. This will be your Conference! At the start of the Rotary Year I mentioned that You (clubs and Rotarians) need to “Toot” your Horn” in a Bigger, Better and Bolder way regarding projects for Building Communities and Bridging Continents. The Conference will be held at Coco Key Family Resort (Formerly Holiday Inn) located at 72nd and Grover (I-80 and 72nd St). Fami-lies are invited and discounted water passes and passes to the
game room will be offered. Guest speaker for the Friday District Luncheon will be Mr. Mike Kelly from the Omaha World- Herald. His topics are current, heart touching and most informative- Plan to attend; Club meet-ings in the metro area will be canceled; and double attendance credit will be given. The conference is casual so pack light and attend often! Friday and Saturday night dinners will be Business dress. Remember that Friday night is the District Governor-elect’s night so all Presidents-elect are asked to attend. Saturday night is the District Governor’s night of Jazz and a night of recognition to all Presidents, Club and District Officers; highlighting the Cadwallader Award and many other awards. District Conference Chair, Peggy, has sent a questionnaire to all club presidents. Please take a moment to complete and send to those indicated on the form and also to her by March 31st. She is hoping to fill the conference with club speakers and displays of your projects (complete or ongoing). The newsletter indicates that awards (only) be in by March 31st. The District has been filled with outstanding projects and a lot of hard work. Soon it will be time to Celebrate at the District Conference raising our glasses and toasting to a “Job Well Done!” Mark your calendars for May 6th and 7th I would like to encourage all clubs and/or Rotarians to participate in my District Project. To help families be-come self sufficient and reproductive with animals and plants, The District is supporting the International Heifer Project. We are trying to get that ARK built (one of every animal offered)- a $5000.00 goal. Please check out the flyer and form in this newsletter. A donation of $115 from each club or individual purchase would make our ARK float!! Your Governor, Roger

Planning is well underway for the 31st Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska, a Northwest Rotary service project undertaken annually with the assistance of the Omaha Pedalers Bicycle Club. Riders will start the tour this year in Brady, Nebraska on Sunday, June 5th. Overnight host towns include Calloway, Burwell, Bassett, O’Neill, Battle Creek, Oakland. The ride will end Saturday in Waterloo with the annual rider’s reception hosted by Northwest Rotarians after traveling 437 miles across the State of Nebraska.
Registration is open and riders have the option of registering with the usual “paper” registra-ton form or they can register online by going to the BRAN website . Registration forms and additional information can be found on the website. Costs include camping, route marking, Tour Guide, T-shirt, water bottle, & host community and lunch stop coordination. A bus ride from the Omaha area to the ride start is available for an additional fee.
Cyclists will travel three of the seven days through Nebraska’s sand hills, one of the largest grass stabilized sand dune regions in the world. The sand hills contain dunes over 400 feet tall and up to 20 miles long. The world’s largest aquifer is also found in the area. Organiz-ers suggest prospective riders “get your motors runnin’, head out on the Nebraska by-ways and go lookin’ for adventure in whatever comes our way.”
Proceeds raised from this annual event fund scholarships offered to Nebraska graduates to attend Nebraska colleges and universities. At present scholarships totaling $25,750 are awarded annually to ten colleges and universities, seven community colleges, eight host towns and one local high school.

I am interested in going on a Polio Plus inoculation trip. Who should I contact to get information about doing this?
by Gretchen Bren, [email protected] Immunization trips are not set up by Rotary International and there is no repository of when/where these trips will be and no set guidelines on who can lead a trip. The two trips I've been on have been lead by Ann Lee Hussey, District Governor from District 7780 (Rotary Club of Casco Bay Sunrise, Maine). She has been going on National Immuniza-tion Days (NID) trips for the last 10 years and has been leader for the past 5 or 6 years. Ann Lee has worked hard to get local contacts in Nigeria and truly makes you work! I've heard of other trips that are more like tours, where you see people working, but you really don't help anyone. Because I am also interested in going to India, I asked Ann Lee for a recommendation for a team leader that goes there regularly. The contact she gave me is Anil Garg, who leads an annual trip to India in February. Anil is PDG from District 5240 in California. The problem with these trips is that you have to go when the country sets the date for the im-munization days, which they rarely do until about a month or two in advance. I found out the date for my November NIDs at the end of October, and Anil set the date for his February trip on December 30, then had to change it. This conflicted with a trip I had already planned, so I was not able to go with him this year. You have to be flexible to be able to make these trips! If you want to contact me, I would be glad to you in touch with either person or just keep you notified when I know about the next trip. Gretchen Bren, [email protected]

Lincoln Sunrise Becomes a Sustaining
Club Lincoln Sunrise this year accom-
plished something that few clubs
have been able to do. Lincoln Sun-
rise became an all member Sus-
taining Club, as well as, giving
$100 per member to “Every Rotar-
ian Every Year.” As a small club
that is a great accomplishment.
