District 29-I Newsletter August 2019 UNLIMITED HORIZONS District Governor Ruth Straley Time is moving quickly since I returned from Italy as your District Governor. We have had our first Council meeting and we are having the first 29-I Cabinet meeting on August 10. I had a delightful DG meeting with the Parsons Club. I was honored to induct four new members and discover they had three more new members yet to be inducted. A good job is being done by all the club members. My thanks go to President VJ Davis for his hospitality and planning. I received word from LCI on July 31 stating there are problems with MY LION, so service activities for July can’t be input. They gave no date for it being fixed – just keep trying to input and one day soon it will work. It is very frustrating when our clubs were getting good at inputting to MyLCI and they take it away. I will update you if I get more information. Our District 29-I Conference is being held at Canaan Valley Resort. I ask that all Presidents and Secretaries attend for the Saturday, September 28 sessions. We would like for everyone to stay the weekend and enjoy the convention in its entirety, but attending on Saturday is most important. Our major function is a LUNCHEON with International Director Larry Edwards speaking. At the conclusion of his speaking we will have the PARADE OF CHECKS. How exciting it will be if every club has one or two representatives present to hand deliver their donations. The convention pricing will be for the weekend or for the Saturday Luncheon only. The Saturday evening meal will be casual. Remember: this is the official LEAF PEEPERS weekend in Tucker County so you can spend your Sunday enjoying the area views and events. I have too many clubs that haven’t scheduled my visit. Combined meetings are encouraged. I am looking forward to meeting all of you. Please call or text me at (904)608-4715. You will be hearing a lot about the Global Action Team (GAT). It is the new emphasis by LCI. It involves the District Leadership, Membership and Service Chairpersons and the Zone Chairs. Stay Tuned. UNLIMITED HORIZONS

District Governor Ruth Straley

Time is moving quickly since I returned from Italy as your District Governor.

Lion John Mason Second Vice District Governor My wife, Lion Kim, teaches at Berkeley Springs High School. Her students are severe, profound and autistic. At the end of the school year, she arranges for a fun day at Cacapon State Park where

the students can fish and play. The students went to the nice playground after lunch. One of the students is in a wheelchair. All of the other students were climbing and swinging on the various equipment. She wanted so much to play on the swing, but she was too big for the handicap swing. Lion Kim googled wheelchair swing and found a company. She contacted the Park Superintendent; he was very receptive to the idea. Our club then setup fundraising activities. We started a Facebook fundraiser activity and what a success. We have been able to raise 80% of the goal thru FB. We have had private donations to help reach our goal. We are in the process of ordering the swing. When the

equipment arrives, we will need help to move and spread the mulch. The goal is to have the swing installed by fall. By using social media, our fundraising effort was made easier. Next time your club has a fundraiser, please consider social media. If I can provide any assistance to your club, please do not hesitate to contact me by telephone at 304-820-7742 or email me at [email protected].

Let’s have fun being a Lion serving our communities.

Susan P. Long Second Vice District Governor

As I mentioned in my last article, I was about to attend my high school reunion and communicate with old friends involving events

that had taken place in their lives. One of the individuals, which I had the opportunity to have a lengthy discussion, was a former teammate throughout our high school years. As I explained to her my success story of my career, she profoundly stated that I was the only one she knew who had achieved a goal mentioned in her yearbook, 50 years ago. Who knew how important one statement in someone’s yearbook could set a goal in motion for a lifetime of success.

As Lions, we need to set goals in order to have success. In the book, “Who Moved My Cheese,” the cheese is a metaphor for what we want to achieve, whether it be getting new members, providing new service projects, raising funds, or just plain fellowship. What makes your club happy and what can we do to achieve that piece of cheese?

As I continue my articles throughout the next three years, I will journey through a maze with four characters. In this maze will be challenges, happiness, changes, great achievements to name a few. So continue to travel with me as I begin my search for the trail through the maze.

SVDG Sue

In our efforts to continue supporting the citizens of Preston County, the seven Lions Clubs

of Preston County are in the process of planning their 2019 Golf Tournament. The tournament is to be held at the Golf Course of Alpine Lake Resort in Terra Alta, West Virginia on

August 24, 2019. Every Lions Club in Preston County works to support many charities and projects. We provide financial assistance with vision screening and prescription eye wear

for Preston County residents in need. We conduct vision screening for school aged children (staring with preschool) at the beginning of each school year. We can also provide assistance

with the acquisition of hearing aids and diabetes screening.

PCC Ken Shahan and Diabetes Chair Howard "Rusty" Mall attended Camp Kno Koma during the annual "Shaving Cream Battle." This year the Camp had 156 youngsters between the ages of 7 and 15 with 80 of those being first timers. Of those 80, first timers having their testing and diabetic injections done by members of their families, after the Camp, many of these will be able to do much of their own testing after learning from the many attendees that have visited the Camp in previous years.

During the visit, they met Dr. Fredrick "Rick" Blum and his son Daniel, who have been at the camp for 40 and 20 years respectively. Dr. Blum explained to the visitors the many activities of the Camp. They were also welcomed by Camp Director Ken Porter and Activities Director Joe Hagedorn.

There was also 115 volunteers, many attend the Camp each year and are volunteers. Many of the volunteers have been participants in the Camp for several years after attending the Camp. Many have gone on to become Doctors, Nurses and Pharmacists.

District 29-I Disaster Relief Chairman Wayne Worth, Adamston Lion Devyn Rose, and Tennerton Lion Johnnaston Kimble helped cleaned the floors of the VFW hall in Harman, WV Sunday June 30th hours after the flood. Stayed tuned to updates on how your club can help or contact Lion Wayne on Facebook or at (304)476-1710. WE SERVE.
