By now most of you who attended our District Convention at Korumburra from the 26 th to the 28 th October will agree that it was pretty good all round. Attendances were up, Delegates were up, Food was excellent, not too many brawls during the debates and lots of good company for everyone. Our local Federal MP Russell Broadbent did a good job opening the Convention. Our local lad, Chief Commissioner of Po- lice, Ken Lay in his keynote speech spoke about our Youth and the things we as Lions can do to ease their transition from child- hood to adulthood in our ultra modern and sometimes trouble- some world. Mayor Raabe in his welcoming remarks spoke about overpopulation and how that effected our ability to put in place the community infrastructure needs in a timely fashion. The Flag Ceremony organised by PDG Di Hicklin brought many a tear to the eye of those present with her affectionate but re- spectful reference to the famous World War One Poem about our Flag being only an old piece of bunting – only an old bit of rag. The Speeches by Lions Clubs International First Vice President Barry Palmer, Past International Director Dr Bob Coulthard (LCIF & Hamburg Convention) and MD201 Council Chairman Lou Onley were delivered with frank sincerity and honesty. Saturday’s Dinner Dance open for the first time to members of the general public was an outstanding success in terms of attendance, quality of music, food and atmosphere. Sunday’s Memorial Service as usual was conducted with re- spect and quiet reflection. The flowers and candle stick holders were outstanding. My thanks to the Convention Committee and the Korumburra Lions Club members for providing us all with such a wonderful weekend. Club visitations since our Convention have included Balnarring, Flinders, Red Hill, Mornington, Leongatha, Mt Erica and the V2 Convention at Williamstown, which Pam and I enjoyed very much. This week we have Lindenow, Lakes Entrance, Churchill Lions and Lioness Clubs which should be good also. Peace Posters have arrived from all over the District. Many thanks to all the Clubs who participated and my best wishes to those students whose work has proceeded to the next level of this great International Competition. By now most of you will have heard that PDG’s Anthony Stock- dale and Barry Brown have recently lost their battle with cancer. At the September Special General Meeting of the Victorian Lions Foundation, several important matters were cleared up.

A complete 2 year audit of the books were presented along with the

All investments are currently being re-assessed with a view to some

changes being made in order to maintain a strong financial base for the future.

From January to October this year we are proud to have distributed a total of $184,500 to four of our projects. David Oakley, P.R. Committee, Victorian Lions Foundation.

MUDDY'S SCOOTER BASH On the 29th October 2012 Peter " Muddy" Waters is going to begin a Gopher ride, from Sydney to Melbourne. Peter, a cerebral palsy suffer-er himself and a member of Lions International (Werribee), is passion-ate about helping children with disabilities. Variety Victoria and the Australian Lions Children's Mobility Foundation are the beneficiaries of this ride with proceeds being evenly divided. Variety are supplying the logistical support while on the road and Lions Clubs are providing evening meals, accommodation, fund raising and publicity. A 3 day survey trip to Sydney working out the logistics has been completed by a representative from both organisations and the club support for overnight stops was overwhelming. These evenings will be spent at Liverpool, Tahmoor, Goulburn, Yass, Gundagai, Holebrook, Albury, Yarrawonga, Shepparton, Seymour and Wallan. The ride will take 13 days including 2 rest days and it will end on Sat 10th at the V2 Convention at Williamstown. Can I encourage the Lions of V3 to support this amazing challenge. I am also aware and appreciate the fact that a number of clubs have already contributed towards Children's Mobility this year. For those who are able to donate, please make cheques out to - Variety Victoria - The Children's Charity and post to - Variety - The Children's Charity, PO Box 1076 South Melbourne VIC 3205 The publicity that Children's Mobility and Lions International will gain from this event cannot be underestimated. I urge your club to give it your full support. Trevor Firth Australian Lions Children's Mobility Foundation V2 / V3 Trustee

Defibrillator donated to Traralgon Golf Club A very excited group from the Traralgon Golf Club were on hand to receive the very latest model "Heartstart" Defibrillator, donated by the Traralgon Lions Club. Golf Club President Jeff Pledge , members, along with Lion's club members, were thrilled with the hands on train-ing. Using 6 mannequins provided by the Sale Operations Branch of St John's Ambulance Officer Ms Glover and her sister May, demonstrated the 2 different Defibrillator models that are now starting to making their way into major shopping centres, public areas, sporting events and clubs. The golf club has had a very long history of Pro-Am, Charity days, func-tions and social gatherings that draw hundreds of players, officials and social groups to celebrate these events. Lion's President Wendy Rudin said "It was fantastic to have this new age Defibulator on site and could very well mean the difference between a great recovery, back enjoying life and family again, rather than a loss of function and major medical problems for all”. It was also stressed that the Defibrilla-tor is to be used in conjunction with Ambulance and sound medical First Aid practices. The project was the brainchild of Lion Billy Scott who said: "I felt the time had come to ensure a safer work and leisure place for all to enjoy their golf and social functions". Billy also organised for the Lions to purchase a Defibrilla-tor for their own 1st Aid Kit to for Lion's service events such as Farmers Market, Family Fun Day and Christmas Carols etc that Lions run and co-ordinate.

CHURCHILL LIONS OUT-BOWL TRAFALGAR AGAIN

On Wednesday 31st October Trafalgar Lions Club members and their fami-lies participated in the Annual Tenpin Bowling Challenge against Churchill & District Lions Club.

With no practice at all since last year’s loss, the Trafalgar group started confi-dently and quickly built up a handy lead, but then wilted under pressure as the Churchill team steadied and went on to win the closely contested event.

The result came as no surprise, as Churchill always win this annual social event which has been a source of enjoyment for both clubs and their families for many years,

After the battle everybody tucked in to a very tasty supper before event organiser, Glenn Rodda, congratulated Churchill & District Lions for their usual superiority and presented the trophy to Club President, Past District Governor Peter McShane. Individual prizes were presented to Mandy Ellis, Ray Medew, Emily Hornby, Betty Shaw and Andre Ng.

It was once again a memorable night, with many balls going down the gutters and many laughs had by all. Maybe next year Traf will have a win? – but history is clearly against it!

Rain from Nowhere - by Murray Hartin (for anyone doing it tough) His cattle didn't get a bid; they were fairly bloody poor, What was he going to do? He couldn't feed them anymore, The dams were all but dry; hay was thirteen bucks a bale, Last month's talk of rain was just a fairytale. His credit had run out, no chance to pay what's owed, Bad thoughts ran through his head as he drove down Gully Road. "Geez, great grandad bought the place back in 1898, "Now I'm such a useless bastard, I'll have to shut the gate. "Can't support my wife and kids, not like dad and those before, "Crikey, Grandma kept it going while Pop fought in the war." With depression now his master, he abandoned what was right, There's no place in life for failures, he'd end it all tonight. There were still some things to do, he'd have to shoot the cattle first, Of all the jobs he'd ever done, that would be the worst. He'd have a shower, watch the news, then they'd all sit down for tea Read his kids a bedtime story, watch some more TV, Kiss his wife goodnight, say he was off to shoot some roos Then in a paddock far away he'd blow away the blues. But he drove in the gate and stopped - as he always had To check the roadside mailbox - and found a letter from his Dad. Now his dad was not a writer, Mum did all the cards and mail But he knew the writing from the notebooks that he used at cattle sales. He sensed the nature of its contents, felt moisture in his eyes, Just the fact his dad had written was enough to make him cry. "Son, I know it's bloody tough; it's a cruel and twisted game, "This life upon the land when you're screaming out for rain, "There's no candle in the darkness, not a single speck of light. "But don't let the demon get you, you have to do what's right; "I don't know what's in your head but push the bad thoughts well away. "See, you'll always have your family at the back end of the day; "You have to talk to someone, and yes I know I rarely did. "But you have to think about Fiona and think about the kids. "I'm worried about you, son, you haven't rung for quite a while, "I know the road you're on 'cause I've walked every bloody mile. "The date? December 7 back in 1983, "Behind the shed I had the shotgun rested in the brigalow tree. "See, I'd borrowed way too much to buy the Johnson place; "Then it didn't rain for years and we got bombed by interest rates. "The bank was at the door; I didn't think I had a choice, "I began to squeeze the trigger - that's when I heard your voice. "You said 'Where are you Daddy? It's time to play our game' "I've got Squatter all set up, we might get General Rain.' "It really was that close, you're the one that stopped me son, "And you're the one that taught me there's no answer in a gun. "Just remember people love you, good friends won't let you down. "Look, you might have to swallow pride and take that job in town, "Just 'til things come good, son, you've always got a choice. "And when you get this letter ring me, 'cause I'd love to hear your voice." Well he cried and laughed and shook his head, then put the truck in gear, Shut his eyes and hugged his dad in a vision that was clear. Dropped the cattle at the yards, put the truck away, Filled the troughs the best he could and fed his last ten bales of hay. Then he strode towards the homestead, shoulders back and head held high, He still knew the road was tough but there was purpose in his eye. He called his wife and children, who'd lived through all his pain, Hugs said more than words - he'd come back to them again. They talked of silver linings, how good times always follow bad, Then he walked towards the phone, picked it up and rang his Dad. And while the kids set up the Squatter, he hugged his wife again, Then they heard the roll of thunder and they smelt the smell of rain.
