OUR HISTORY: LOCAL ICONS

William H. Turner was born in 1931, in the Overtown community of Miami, FL. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, FL, in 1956, a Master of Education degree from the University of Miami in 1969, and a Doctor of Law degree from Faith College in Birmingham, AL, in 1982. Turner began his career working as a police officer (1956-1957) and public school teacher (1957-1971) in Dade County. In 1971, he was elected to the Dade County School Board, becoming the first African American to serve on the board. His first term on the school board ended in 1978, when he was defeated in a re-election bid, but he was re-elected in 1982. He then served on the school board until 1992, serving as board chair from 1989-1991. In 1992, Turner was elected to the Florida State Senate, representing District 36 in Dade County, and served as a state senator until 1998, when he was defeated in a Democratic primary. William H. Turner Technical Arts High School in Miami-Dade was named for him in 1993.

Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry was the first African-American woman elected to the Florida Legislature and Dade County's first black female attorney. Born in Miami, Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry earned three degrees between 1946 and 1965, while mothering two children. Her bachelor's degree and law degree were from Florida A&M University; she also earned a master's degree in science from New York University. After careers as a teacher and a lawyer, Cherry was elected to the Florida House in 1970. She introduced the Equal Rights Amendment there in 1972, chaired the state's committee for International Woman's Year in 1978, and co-authored Portraits in Color.

Dr. Bendross-Mindingall was saddened, along with our community, to hear of the loss of two of our precious students during the third week of school. Upon hearing the devastating news, she convened a meeting with Miami Northwestern Principal Aristide, administration, teachers, staff, parents, clergy, and community leaders to provide solutions to save our students. The committee decided to implement a plan to recruit positive role models to mentor every male student at Miami Northwestern. On October 9th, the school held the first Bulls Men of Valor event at the school’s Lee R. Perry Sports Complex. In attendance were community leaders, law enforcement, former Bulls and educators. The male students in attendance were able to speak directly to potential mentors and commit to serving as a mentee. We are so grateful the community came together to show our love and support to our students.

ALL Male leaders are encouraged to COMMIT to serving as a mentor for young students. #BullsMenOfValor
