Checking body fat is a step towards a healthier life.

What does your body fat percentageindicate?• The body fat percentage indicates the proportion of fat in the body.

• Too much body fat can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetesand some forms of cancer. It is important to monitor your body fat to keepbody fat levels in check.

How the BF-572 measures your body fatpercentage • The TANITA Body Fat Monitor / Scale uses BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance

Analysis). This measures the body’s electrical resistance.

• Fat does not conduct electricity well, whereas muscle tissue, due to its watercontent, is a better conductor. A person with more fat therefore has higherelectrical resistance, and so measuring this resistance can determine theproportion of fat in the body.

When to use the TANITABody Fat Monitor / Scale • BIA relies on levels of hydration, and changes in the body’s hydration can

affect the body fat percentage reading.

• Hydration can vary depending on your physical condition (e.g. if you haveovereaten, drunk too much alcohol, have sweated excessively, or duringmenstruation). It can also fluctuate with the time of day.

TANITA recommends that people use the TANITA Body Fat Monitor / Scale in theearly evening, before the evening meal (see graph left). It is important to beconsistent in your use of the Body Fat Monitor / Scale.

• Remember: Use the Body Fat Monitor / Scale at the same time of day, underthe same conditions for consistent readings.

Ideal conditions of use

Time: Early evening, before the evening meal.

Conditions: Ensure that your feet are clean and dry.Wear as little clothing as possible.

• Personal details for up to 4 users can be memorised.

• Stores personal readings and displays them on a graph toshow changes in body fat percentage over time.

• Features weight-only button to measure weight alone.

• The BF-572 can be used by adults over 18 years, children over 7 and athletes.

Athlete ModeDue to differences in hydration and body composition, individuals who perform alot of sport may be overestimated by Standard Adult Mode. These people should usethe Athlete Mode. The Athlete Mode is designed for:

Taking Readings

Page 6: Distributor Details BF5727811(1)dl.owneriq.net/7/7c79aa46-8c0b-476e-bac1-3e6f40c89306.pdf · US office; customers from European countries excepting France and Germany, and North Africa

Since body fat levels change slowly, over time, it is important to study your overalltrend, not just the individual readings. The graph function allows you to do this.

The graph function can store over 80 consecutive readings. When starting to use theBF-572 it is recommended that you use the unit 45 times in succession (e.g. once aday for 6 weeks) in order to store enough readings to show on the graph. Ideally, you should store approximately 3 months’ readings, before studying the graph.

Explanation of the GraphValue of the Columns (A-G)

• Yellow section (A) shows the current reading.

• Blue section (B) shows the average of the 7 most recent readings.

• Blue section (C, D, E) each show the average of the 7 readings beforethe last column.

• Dark blue section (F, G) each represent the average of the preceding 28 readings before the last column.

Value of the IncrementsThe graph can display 3 different values for the bars of 0.2%, 0.5% and 1%.See the diagrams below to interpret the values.

1. The bar value is 1% and the graph shows a downward trend. The user’s body fat percentage has decreased significantly (in this case by 7% between column G and A).

2. The bar value is 0.5% and the graph shows a downward trend. The user’s body fatpercentage has decreased (in this case by 3.5%) which is less than point 1 above.

3. The bar value is 0.2% and the graph shows fluctuations. This individual’s bodyfat percentage has remained consistent. The overall trend shows a change of only0.2%, which can be due to fluctuations in individual readings.

4. The bar value is 0.5% and the graph has risen slightly. The user’s body fatpercentage has fluctuated over time, but shows an overall rise of 1%.

See the section ‘When to use TANITA Body Fat Monitor’ for information aboutfluctuations in body fat percentage readings.

NB. When you come to use the unit, a bar will flash in the left hand column (G)after you press your personal memory key. This bar indicates the number of storedreadings contained within the right-hand column (B). For example, the illustrationto the left shows that are three readings in this column.

Changing Batteries When ‘Lo’ appears on the screen, then change all four batteries at once. Ensure thatthe batteries are correctly positioned as shown on page 6.

TroubleshootingIn case of problems, please consult the following before contacting TANITA.

• Your preferred unit of measurement (kgs, st-lb, lbs) is not displayed.

Refer to page 6 to change the unit of weight to your preferred setting.

• Nothing happens after your pre-set data is displayed.

Ensure that the display shows ‘0 0.0’ before stepping on the scale. Ensure that yourfeet are correctly positioned on the electrodes. Ensure that the batteries are correctlypositioned.

• ‘Lo’ appears on the display, or the display data disappears.

Replace the batteries immediately.

• ‘OL’ appears whilst measuring.

The applied weight is over 21st 6lbs / 136kg / 300lbs, or the body fat percentagereading is over 75%.

• ‘-no-’ and a Personal Memory Key number appear on the display, and thegraph displays an ‘X’.

There is a significant difference between the current reading and the last reading forthat Memory Key.

Ensure that you have selected the correct Personal Memory Key. If not, then step offthe unit and the result will not be stored on the graph.

If the Personal Memory Key is correct, and you want the new reading to be stored, then press SET whilst the display is flashing.

• The body fat reading does not appear after the weight reading.
