DISTRIBUTION OF COLLECTIONS OF INTERGOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATION PUBLICATIONS IN THE BRITISH ISLES

Abstract - This article constitutes a list of intergovernmental organisations whose publications are collected by libraries to which the public or researchers are likely to have access.

This list has been derived from information received from the intergovernmental organisations and from their national agents. The replies from the various organisations and agents was such that the in- formation available varies from one organisation to another. For a description of the variations see the notes following the table. Only those libraries to which the public or researchers are likely to have access have been included. Prior inquiry about admission is advisable.

The abbreviations used for the intergovernmental organisations are as follows:

Bank for International Settlements. The BIS has no depository libraries in the British Isles, but many

university libraries receive the annual report upon request.

European Communities. The publications of the Commission, the European Coal and Steel Commis- sion, Euratom, the European Parliament, the Court of Justice, the Economic and Social Committee, and the European Investment Bank are sent to depository libraries and to European Documentation Centres.

International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the International Developinent Assoclatlon (World Bank) do not have depositories in the British Isles. United Nations depositories (and frequently other libraries) are often on a special mailing list for free publications.

International Civil Aviation Organlsatlon. In addition to the depository libraries indicated, contrac- ting states receive a number of copies of publications in proportion to their contribution for further distribution.

Intematlonal Monetary Fund. It is not the policy of the IMF to designate depositories for their publications. However, many United Nations depositories (and frequently other libraries) are on mail- ing lists for free publications.

International Telecommunications Union. The ITU has no depository libraries, although postal ad- ministrations in member states have a certain number of copies of each publication available for further distribution.

Organlsatlon of American States. The OAS was unable to provide information about libraries other than depositories; thus all libraries which subscribe to all the publications are not included in this com- pilation.

Universal Postal Union. The UPU has no depository libraries in the British Isles. Postal administra- tions receive a certain number of copies, which may be available at the library attached to the postal headquarters.

World Health Organisation. Information available from the WHO indicated only the depository libraries, and did not include the subscribers to their global subscription service. The WHO also sends one set of all its publications to each national ministry of health.

World Meteorological Organisatlon. The WMO does not have a depository library in the British Isles; however, two copies of each publication are distributed to the permanent representatives of member countries.
