DISIT Lab is focused on parallel and collaborative solutions for automated intelligence as a support for business, media industry, health care organizations, education, transportation, social networks, best practice networks and for collaborative environments in general. The DISIT solutions and infrastructure allow to ingest, manage and analyze huge amount of data sources to extract knowledge and infer deductions, thus taking decisions and providing real time reactions, suggestions, etc.

DISIT tools and solutions are validated and adopted in DISIT Lab cloud infrastructure for experiments and training on heterogeneous operating systems to massively distributed and parallel solutions on the cloud for grid, intelligent reasoning, P2P, crawling, mining, indexing, etc. Students and professionals accesses to the infrastructure, some of the most effective examples are:• DISIT Cloud and Media GRID infrastructure based on AXCP Media Grid;• Facilities on the cloud: networking, P2P, DRM P2P, grid, clustering, crawling, optimization, processing; • Mobile facilities for: iOS, Windows Phone, Android, BlackBerry;• Parallel and scalable formal methods model checking and theorem proving; • OSIM knowledge based data mining and intelligence: about people, structures and research activities; • ECLAP social network with a large collection of cross media content and users, cross media LMS.

Thus, DISIT expertise and skills can be useful for projects in the following call objectives:• 1.1-Future Networks • 1.2-Cloud Computing, Internet of Services and Advanced Software Engineering• 1.4-Trustworthy ICT• 1.6-Future Internet Research and Experimentation, FIRE • 4.4-Intelligent Information Management• 8.1-Technology-enhanced Learning

In more details, DISIT-DSI Research Group and Lab has recently produced research results in the following areas:• Parallel and distributed solutions to cope with:

• Large scale solutions for cloud and grid, development environments• Data mining and understanding, natural language processing• Media grid computing for semantic computing (see AXCP media grid, which can manage on the

grid any third party algorithms and solutions for computing and processing) • Monitoring and processing for P2P networks, Web portals, OAI-PMH, Social Networks, etc.• Formal models, networking and simulations.

• Intelligence, reasoning with inference in the presence of uncertainty: • Semantic computing and reasoning, symbolic reasoning and similarity computation; • Decision making systems, machine learning, business intelligence;• User behavior analysis, monitoring and reasoning, suggestions, recommendations; • Ontology management and processing, reconciliation;• Ontology for software engineering, automated requirements understanding; • Linked open data, open media, exploitation and reasoning;• Audio visual annotation tools, non-linear story modeling and play;• Heuristic and statistical models, optimization models and algorithms, data clustering, prediction

models;• Intelligent content, cross media content: mpeg-21, epub, smil, html5, ...;• Media mining and understanding, fingerprint extraction;• Polyphonic music transcoding.

• Natural language processing:• Natural language ingestion, indexing, understanding;• Large scale multilingual indexing and search, semantics and fuzzy;• Document analysis, processing and semantic indexing;

• Social network infrastructure and management:• Social network for mobiles, social networks interoperability;• Social and collaborative e-learning, cross-media LMS;• Multimodal cognitive solutions: audio, speech, haptic (gesture, posture and movement).

• Distributed multimedia systems, media computing and delivering:• Multimedia software engineering, production of media authoring tools; • Automated content ingestion, user generated content/experience; • Mobile applications for iPhone, iPad, Windows Phone, Android, ...; • Trustworthy, protection, verification, licensing and authorization, device fingerprint,

P2P DRM, CAS;• Management of IPR, IPR wizard, licensing models, CC.

DISIT research lab has produced new knowledge and innovation, opening new markets, establishing new standards and changing the state of the art.

DISIT solutions are enforced in many third party applications and tools, applied as end-to-end interactive solutions for small and large scale systems, or as largely distributed production tools. DISIT has contributed to setting up and improving standards and/or open source platforms. DISIT works on open (e.g., apache, mysql, drupal, tomcat, openauth, oai-pmh, etc.) and proprietary solutions.

SELECTED RECORD

DISIT-DSI Research Group and Lab’s last relevant projects (http://www.disit.dsi.unifi.it):

• Open Space Innovative Mind, OSIM http://openmind.axemdis.org matching demand and offer regarding research activities. OSIM project is based on technologies of: data mining multi-sources, reconciliation, natural language processing, multilingual SKOS automated production, semantic reasoning, competence ontology, inferential query, natural language queries.

• ECLAP ICT PSP http://www.eclap.eu, an infrastructure and solution for Best Practice Networking among performing art professionals and lovers, with the automated content ingestion, annotation, enrichment, multilingual additions, contextualization and posting information on Europeana EDM. ECLAP portal is centred around user experience

by providing services based on automated tools for semantic computing, multilingual indexing and search, faceted, recommendations, similarities, aggregations, publication for PC and mobiles, networking, blog, intelligent content for decision taking, ..;

• MyStoryPlayer http://www.mystoryplayer.org model and tools for semantic audio visual annotations. In MyStoryPlayer, any media segment can be annotated with other media elements, to create an infinite number of non linear paths based on media annotations. It allows performing and saving personal experiences as non-

linear stories by following temporal and logical relationships formalized via semantic annotations. The non-linear experiences which can be used as educational tools where there are multi-cameras and multiple annotations. For example this can occur in medical, theatrical (see http://www.ECLAP.eu , net-meeting environments;

• Mobile Medicine http://mobmed.axmedis.org multichannel social network for medical personnel, portal to support mobile automated content production and distribution; intelligent content and content organizers for pc and mobile, iPhone (see Mobile Medicine on Apple Store), iPad, PDA, medical procedures, production of mini-applications for dosage estimation and decision taking support, applications in the areas of: emergency, educational, critical conditions, etc. Mobile Medicine services are provided thanks to semantic computing innovative features: personal recommendations, symbolic similarity, multilingual indexing and fuzzy search;

• AXMEDIS IST IP http://www.AXMEDIS.org, a media production and distribution framework, which has been validated by means of real activities with end-users by leading distributor partners. The framework includes tools for (i) automated media and cross media content production and distribution, (ii) protection and digital right management for several business models, (iii) intelligent content management, (iv) multichannel distribution for i-TV-PC, PC, kiosks, mobiles, PDAs, via P2P, Internet, Broadcasting, etc., (v) full support for MPEG-21, MPEG, XMF, SMIL, HTML, newsML, etc., (vi) players for PC, mobile, set-top-box, (vii) media authoring tools;
