Distracted driving is the act of driving while engaged in other activities(Wikipedia)
There are three main types of distraction:
Visual taking your eyes off the road
Manual taking your hands off the wheel
Cognitive taking your mind off of driving

Through distraction the response time extends dramatically:
Unimpaired: 0.54 seconds to brake
Legally drunk: add 4 feet (1.2 m)
Reading an e-mail: add 36 feet (14 m)
Sending a text: add 70 feet (21 m)

• The National Transportation Safety Board has named distracted driving as one of the 10 most important safety issues to remedy
• 3.477 total deaths, 391.000 severe injuries due to distracted driving
• 78% of all distracted drivers have been texting while driving

• Alarming rise in the number of smart phone use while driving
• Very concerning high number amongst professional drivers using their smartphone (app. 52 %)
• 1 in 6 male drivers under 25 has crashed due to mobile phone usage
• 1/3 under 25s with Facebook on their phone have used it whilst driving

• Derailment of a high speed train due to excessive speed on 24th July 2013
• 79 people died, more than 140 travellers were injured
• Cause: Excessive speed Due to the distraction of a colleague's call the driver ignored three audible warnings that should cause him to brake.Lessons learnt from this tragic event:
The Spanish railway company Renfe redesigned the rules on communication between train drivers, operations control center and the staff traveling on board the train and on the other service calls
