Did You Know:• As of April 1, 2020, the fine for distracted driving is $615 and a minimum of three demerit points.
A minimum 3-day licence suspension applies to all drivers on conviction and new drivers face an increased minimum 30-day suspension for a first offence.
• A cell phone can only be used ‘hands free’ while driving – which includes not touching the face of the phone under any circumstances. A cell phone can only be handled / operated by a driver of a motor vehicle when parked off the travelled portion of the roadway or otherwise in a parking lot. Any use of a cell phone – including GPS, music, texting, internet, email or use of any apps – constitutes an offence.
• In 2019, 1 in 4 fatal crashes involved some form of distraction. In Ontario, one person is injured in a distracted driving collision every half hour.
