ROSWELL PARK ALLIANCE FOUNDATIONThe Foundation’s goal is to help secure critical donations for Roswell Park

Comprehensive Cancer Center’s lifesaving research and compassionate care programs that address the psychosocial needs of patients and families touched by cancer. Formed in 1991 as an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, the

Foundation receives and administers all donations to Roswell Park.

In March 2004, Kathleen went in for endometrial surgery. But her surgeon

quickly discovered that she was “loaded with cancer.” “He called Dr. Lele, who came to Buffalo General and operated on me. I believe Dr. Lele delayed his vacation to do this,” Kathleen says. Shashikant Lele, MD, FACOG, is Clinical Chief of Gynecologic Oncology at Roswell Park, and that was just the beginning of the role he would play in Kathleen’s life.

Kathleen began treatment immediately after her surgery, qualified for a clinical trial and went into remission for 10 years. Advanced ovarian cancer is difficult to eradicate, so she has been called a miracle. She now has had two recurrences, in 2015 and 2017, and has undergone radiation as well as more chemo and surgery.

It’s been a journey of many ups and downs. But Kathleen says she has found help and joy in the many people at Roswell Park, from Dr. Lele and his staff to the people of the Resource Center and its Wig and Head Covering Boutique.

“Not only did they provide me with a hat and a wig,” she says, “but they also provided me with courage and a smile. I left with a smile on my face and a positive attitude.”

Dr. Witkiewicz is an internationally recognized clinician-scientist who combines groundbreaking laboratory research with precision medicine. Her research interests include identifying mechanisms that drive the invasive progression of cancer, with a special focus on breast and pancreatic cancers. Dr. Witkiewicz came to us from the University of Arizona, where she was Vice Chair of the Pathology Department, Director of the Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship Program, Director of Tissue Acquisition and Cellular/Molecular Analysis Shared Resource and Professor in the Department of Pathology. She joined Roswell Park this year.

• Inaugural Lee Foundation Endowed Chair in Palliative and Supportive Care

• Associate Professor of Oncology

After a generous personal gift from Patrick P. Lee in memory of his son, Patrick Warn Lee, Dr. Case was named the first Lee Foundation Chair in Palliative and Supportive Care. In this role she will spearhead innovative programs treating the whole person through emotional, psychosocial and pastoral care. She has a focus in neuropathic pain, prognostication and palliative medicine education, and teaches medical students, residents and fellows. She was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) in 2015. Dr. Case joined Roswell Park in 2016.

As the first Chair of the newly established Department of Oral Oncology and Director of the Center for Oral Oncology, Dr. Seshadri will lead our efforts translating clinically relevant research in oral oncology and dental medicine to meaningful patient outcomes. His research program is focused on developing novel imaging tools and strategies to prevent oral cancer and mitigate the oral side effects of cancer treatments. His work has been funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation. Dr. Seshadri joined Roswell Park in 2002.

Immunotherapy Enables New Attack on Cancer Cells

A new strategy developed at Roswell Park aims to deliver a two-pronged attack against cancer cells by super-charging the immune system. The therapy is being studied in patients for the first time through a phase 1 clinical trial at Roswell Park. A patient’s T lymphocytes, or T cells — which are part of the immune system and help the body fight disease — are collected and sent over to Roswell Park’s Center for Immunotherapy. There they are armed with receptors that enable the T cells to hunt down and destroy specific tumor cells. They are also given a second gene to protect the T cells from attack from a protein that tumors use for protection. The T cells are then injected back into the patient and get to work fighting cancer.

This trial was made possible thanks to donations to Roswell Park as well as funding from the National Institutes of Health. Your continued support will enable us to advance clinical trials for this line of research.

Team Discovers Ovarian Cancer Transmission Pathway

Researchers have discovered that ovarian cancer transmission risk is greater on the father’s side of the family than on the mother’s, and it’s because of a gene on the X chromosome called MAGEC3. Men have only one X chromosome, so if they inherit one from their mother with a mutated MAGEC3 gene on it, they’ll definitely pass the gene on to any daughters they have. This discovery was possible thanks to the Familial Ovarian Cancer Registry, an archive of information and blood samples that has been growing for more than 37 years at Roswell Park. Both the registry and the study have been funded by donor support. Continued support will help us determine the complete role played by MAGEC3 and possibly help begin cancer prevention steps in at-risk families.

Pediatric Wellness Program Helps Kids Feel better

Cancer treatments too often come with debilitating side effects like pain, headaches, nausea, fatigue and anxiety. Roswell Park has launched a new Integrative Medicine Program to alleviate these problems for our youngest patients. Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) such as acupuncture, massage and reflexology as well as nutritional counseling are utilized to eliminate or reduce discomfort. Roswell Park is providing these to pediatric patients free of charge, thanks to the generosity of donors like you. Research performed throughout the program is expected to produce data that will support the development of a Roswell Model that other institutions will seek to replicate. Your continued support will help us expand these noninvasive treatments to all patients and create the Roswell Model.

With your help, Roswell Park:• will be able to revamp its clinic serving the Departments of Head and

Neck/Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Oral Oncology and Speech Pathology. The new configuration will create a healing, patient-centric environment that will improve care quality and delivery for patients in this crucial area of the hospital.

• will be able to update its Clinical Trials Unit. Clinical trials enable us to offer new hope to those battling cancer and bring tomorrow’s treatments to our patients today. Through this campaign, our existing pharmacy and clinical space on 7 North will be modernized to meet new needs and standards.

• hopes to expand its Assessment and Treatment Center to address patients’ needs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Things like coughs, shortness of breath and fever can mean very different things in a cancer patient than in others and must be addressed by cancer specialists. The ATC gives patients access to Roswell care outside of business hours and when they can’t immediately see their regular practitioner.

• has established a medical oncology affiliation with Oneida Healthcare in Central New York to expand the availability and delivery of quality cancer care to patients in the Oneida and surrounding communities. With this new partnership, Central New Yorkers will have access to quality cancer care and will only need to travel to Roswell Park when deemed medically necessary.
