Introduction

If you haven’t already, read the ‘What is plagiarism?’ section of the Student Handbook (pp. 17-19) before you start working through this Guide. It will explain what TurnitinUK is, and why we use it.

Your assessment submission will be made up of your TurnitinUK Similarity Report and your word-processed TAQ student answer sheet. Both must be uploaded to your learner account at distancelearningcentre.com.

This Guide will provide step-by-step instructions on how to use TurnitinUK as a DLC student.

Using TurnitinUK during your Diploma

Each time you start a new subject set (such as Biology, Psychology or Business) you will be given the details for a new class to join on TurnitinUK. This is:

• The class ID

• The enrolment key

All of the units for that subject set will be listed – you may not be studying them all on your pathway.

You will only need to register for TurnitinUK once, and we’ll go through how to do this now.

Important point: The most common issue that learners encounter is using the US rather than the UK version of Turnitin. Always use http://www.turnitinuk.com, otherwise your class ID and enrolment key won’t work.

The Similarity Report:

Viewing your Similarity Report

On your Class Homepage

Click on the Similarity percentage (this is the percentage of the text in your submission that matches sources in the database) to view the Similarity Report:

The TurnitinUK Document Viewer will now open

Important point: This may open as a new window or as a new tab on your browser. If it does not open then add www.turnitinuk.com to the list of safe sites that your browser will allow pop-ups for.

Your submission will have been checked and any similarieties will have been highlighted in different colours. Each colour represents a different source that has been found in your work (but hopefully it won’t look like this example!):

Down the right hand side are the tools that you can use to check your Similarity Report in detail:

Understanding your Similarity Report: percentages or highlighting?

Important point: There is no set similarity percentage that is acceptable/unacceptable, as it’s the type or frequency of unoriginal text that is important. Some text will always come up as unoriginal, and this is to be expected (such as facts and figures, or everybody having a similar hypothesis in an experiment).

As a general rule, the percentage is not what is used to judge the level of originality. Here’s an example from Turnitin:

You may have a firm basis of knowledge for the same assignment you've submitted, knowing enough to gather information from several sources to quote and reference correctly has a similarity score of 22%. In comparison, a student may have copied and pasted a chunk of text into their paper, due to a lack of knowledge on the topic they are covering. Their similarity score is 20%. Both students will be shown to have matches against our database. However, you provided properly sourced quotes and the other student copied directly from a website.

As we can see, the percentage doesn’t tell the whole story – to see what’s really happening you need to look at the Similarity Report itself. Looking at the highlighted text in these two reports would show which assessment should be submitted, and which should be looked at again. This is why it is what is highlighted that is so important, perhaps even moreso than the percentage.

Interpreting the Similarity Report

Available at: http://bit.ly/2rm2aMD

This submission has 86% unoriginal content. By clicking here you’ll be able to see the sources that make up that 86%.

You can see the sources that have been highlighted in more detail here. But do not change this setting – you will need to resubmit if you do.

Do not change this setting – you will need to resubmit if you do.

Do not change this setting – you will need to resubmit if you do.

This is how you download your Originality Report

This gives you information about the document you have uploaded.

Press this to go back to the Originality Report as full screen.

Highlighted work that is acceptable

Click on the number floating above the coloured highlighted text to see how similar your work is to the source:

The unoriginality of this is acceptable because:

• of the nature of the TAQ;

• the type of information that is being given;

• the factual nature of the information (there’s only so many ways to say this);

• because this information is then referenced at the end of the TAQ.

The subject also needs to be taken into account: in a Science subject a fact is a fact and you can’t change a fact. But in the Social Sciences you’ll be asked to evaluate and analyse – there are many (many) ways to do this. This difference between the subjects will therefore influence the Similarity Reports that will be produced.

Important point: If you’re in doubt, you can always ask your tutor to have a look at this section of your Turnitin report.

Page 11: DistanceLearningCentre · If you haven’t already, read the ‘What is plagiarism?’ section of the Student Handbook (pp. 17- 19) before you start working through this Guide. It

Highlighted work that is unacceptable

However, the following example shows unoriginality that is unacceptable:

This is unacceptable because it evidences plagiarism:

• This learner has copied somebody else’s work without quoting and/or referencing: they have submitted somebody else’s work and said that it is their own.

• Some words have been changed (perhaps to avoid detection), but this does not stop it from being plagiarised.

The learner should take this opportunity to edit their work before submitting it to their tutor. In this instance we would advise:

• Deleting this TAQ and start again using the reading that has already been completed. Note down the key points that you want to discuss, and elaborate on them using the learned knowledge that has come from researching.

• Anything that needs to be in quotation marks should be.

• Anything that includes information that needs to be referenced should be.

This is a very extreme example of plagiarism, and it’s unlikely that you’ll see this in your work. It would be more likely that a phrase or a sentence is highlighted. As long as this isn’t a fact or can’t be reworded (such as in Science), rewriting or parahrasing is recommended. To do this:

• Read what has been written originally;

• Note down the key points that are being made on a piece of paper, and then delete the original sentence/s;

• Using your notes, write a sentence in your own words – this should then be referenced if it has been paraphrased. (Paraphrased means that the idea has come from a source, but you have put it into your own words.)

What to do next

You are encouraged to use your Similarity Report to improve your submission. You should view your initial Similarity Report and use it to edit your submission. This will help you to learn how to master paraphrasing and citation (referencing) effectively.

This revised submission can then be resubmitted to TurnitinUK to generate a new Similarity Report.

You can resubmit your submission to TurnitinUK up to three times without having to wait 24 hours for an updated report. After three (re)submissions, TurnitinUK cannot generate another Similarity Report for 24 hours.

Once you’re happy with your submission then you are ready to save your Similarity Report and upload it to your distancelearningcentre.com learner account.

Important point: You may edit your submission as many times as you want to before you upload it to your distancelearningcentre.com learner account, but after three (re)submissions, TurnitinUK cannot generate another Similarity Report for 24 hours.

To resubmit

Go to your TurnitinUK Class Homepage

Click on the Resubmit button:

You will then be able to repeat the process as you did with your first submission

What to do if your report has not generated in time

This can happen if TurnitinUK is running slowly. You have two choices at this point:

1. Wait for the new Similarity Report If this means that you will miss your deadline for an assessment, then request an extension from your tutor. This will always be granted.

2. Move onto your next unit You can do this as long as you submit the word processed TAQ answer sheet (in other words, the document that you uploaded to Turnitin) to your distancelearningcentre.com learner account.

You must email your tutor to explain that you have submitted your word processed TAQ answer sheet and that you’re waiting for Turnitin to generate a Similarity Report. They will then be able to provide you with your next unit code. You must upload the Similarity Report the following day. If you are not able to do this then email your tutor to explain.
