South Africa’s most affordable Higher Education Institution, Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology (RGIT) has won the National Business of the Year Award. This year’s ceremony was held on the 16 November 2017 at Emperors Palace, Gauteng and marked the 15th anniversary of the National Business Awards.

The event’s most prestigious accolade, was awarded to Richfield before a host of business and government leaders, VIPs and media representatives. Also watching, via live social media updates, were thousands of South Africans whose engagement kept the awards trending for several hours.

Richfield has become a pioneering Higher Education Institution which has evolved with the explosion of digital technologies. Serving South African for almost 3 decades, Richfield has become the knowledge powerhouse it is today, with 33 higher education campuses and 40 TVET campuses countrywide.Having recently won several international awards in Oxford (UK), Geneva (Switzerland), Rome (Italy) and London (UK), ranging from ‘perfection, quality and ideal performance’ to ‘sustainability, quality achievements and technology integration’. It is therefore not surprising that Richfield has taken SA’s top business award for 2017.

For a decade and a half, South Africa’s National Business Awards has recognised outstanding achievements by companies. This year’s list of winners exemplifies the phrase ‘the Oscars of South African

Business’, which has become synonymous with the National Business Awards the finalists for the respective awards included Discovery Health, Woolworths, Rennies Travel, CTICC, Microsoft SA, amongst others.

Richfield’s CEO, Jay Ramnundlall, commented, “We were extremely proud to come away with the trophy, especially given the calibre of the organisations we were up against. I would like to thank the Judges for recognising our hard work and our quest to open up distance learning to all. This accolade belongs to everyone at Richfield and provides a motivational boost to our efforts. Respected recognition platforms like the National Business Awards have been shown to enhance brand reputation and we appreciate the exposure this accolade will generate around our learning solutions. In short, we are honoured to accept this award”.

The South National Qualifications Framework (NQF) is a single integrated system for the “classification, registration, publication and articulation of quality-assured national qualifications”. The NQF Act provides for three co-ordinated qualifications sub-frameworks namely: • General and Further Education and Training, contemplated in the General and Further Education and Training Quality Assurance Act, 2001 (Act 58 of 2001) overseen by Umalusi. • Higher Education, contemplated in the Higher Education Act, 1997 (Act 101 of 1997) overseen by the Council on Higher Education. • Trades and Occupations, contemplated in the Skills Development Act, 1998 (Act 97 of1998) overseen by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations. The objectives of the NQF of the NQF Act, are to: • Create a single integrated national framework for learning achievements; • Facilitate access to, and mobility and progression within, education and training career paths; • Enhance the quality of education and training; • Accelerate the redress of past unfair discrimination in education, training and employment opportunities. The objectives of the NQF are designed to contribute to the full personal development of each student and the social and economic development of the nation at large. The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) together with the Quality Councils (QCs) must seek to achieve the objectives of the NQF by: • Developing, fostering and maintaining an integrated and transparent national framework for the recognition of learning achievements; • Ensuring that South African qualifications meet appropriate criteria, determined by the Minister as contemplated in Section 8 [of the NQF Act], and are internationally comparable; and • Ensuring that South African qualifications are of an acceptable quality. In order to assist student in establishing the regulatory authority and quality assurance arrangements, each agency programme offered by the institution is indicated with the applicable quality assurance regulator.

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technolo-gy is to enable the qualify-ing student to enter various sub-categories within the Information Technology in-dustry. The degree has been struc-tured to allow students to choose an elective in one of

three possible areas within the IT industry. The curricu-lum has specific outcomes aimed at developing profes-sional, generic and specific skills required within each area of elective.

All aspects of the programme have extensive practical el-

ements, with emphasis on group and individual work, and the associated business, communication and presen-tation skills.

In addition, the student is assured of being exposed to the latest, cutting-edge IT technologies and strategies.

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSc IT) - 3 Years

Today Information Technology goes beyond the design, and develop-ment of computer systems (hard-ware and software) and networks, which were historically used for ob-taining, processing, and distributing data. This field has been growing at a very rapid pace over the last few years, and this growth is expected to remain stable. Thousands of new jobs are been created by IT as we move away from the Information Age and Knowledge Age to the Digital Age.

Students will learn how to deter-mine information needs by under-standing user expectations and converting these to design ele-ments in adressing how to auto-mate business processes, ensuring safeguards with regards to cyber security, cloud computing, internet of things, mobile computing and digital applications development.

The BSc in IT allows students to choose cutting-edge technology electives including artificial intel-ligence and programming or soft-ware engineering. Those seeking a more strategic direction in this space may choose IT Strategic Management and Risk Manage-ment.

Purpose of Qualification

National Certificate: Occupationally Directed EducationTraining and Development Practices (NQF 5)

This qualification is for those who want to build on a FETC in any field to enter the field of ODETD as a potential career and have little or no previous exposure to ETD. The development of skills within and for the workplace is a priority within South Africa, as supported by legislation, national policies and strategies. Much of the needed skills development is carried out by people who have knowledge and skills within their area of expertise, but lack the required skills in relation to ETD. Many of the skills development objectives, nationally and within companies and organisations, are met through the efforts of ETD practitioners operating at NQF Level 5, and this certificate addresses the key competencies of such practitioners. This qualification will meet the needs of those who wish to progress beyond the FETC ODETD, or who wish to enter the field of ETD for the first time. The certificate will also help to increase the employment prospects of ETD practitioners, while helping to ensure quality and compe-tence within the ETD field. This qualification will provide a means to recognise ODETD practise at level 5 across five key ETD roles in a generalist capacity, with particular application possible in at least one role. Practitioners who wish to extend the skills in ETD to cover further ETD roles should select the Diploma ODETD, Level 5.
