Distance Learning Instructions Period 4 – Intro to Music Week 6 – May 11th – 15th
By now, you should have the routine pretty well figured out. If you still haven’t been able to
get into the swing of this crazy distance learning thing, please try to follow these steps: 1. Start from the first week of distance learning packets and move forward. Late work is
accepted, so don’t confuse yourself by skipping a week of work and not understanding what you missed.
2. READ the packet. Mrs. Shanker is not able to hold Zoom classes to teach the lesson or the tech support, but she did write this wonderful step by step guide to help you. Yes, it’s long, but that’s because she has taken the feedback of students asking the same questions every week and addressed the common issues right here for everyone to see.
3. Try – Ask a Peer – Ask Shanker. Try to complete the work as instructed in the packet. When something goes wrong, ask a friend/peer from your class or another of Shanker’s classes that may be able to clarify or help you. If that doesn’t work, reach out to Mrs. Shanker, but be kind and be specific. When you send a message to Mrs. Shanker, be specific about the week #, the assignment title, what seems to be the problem, and please sign you full name. Mrs. Shanker has an average of ten minutes per student per week to teach, help, trouble shoot, and grade your work. (according to the hours teachers are supposed to work and that’s IF baby Zoe cooperates). This is a very stressful time for us all and we must remember to be kind, patient, and always assume the best intentions from each other.
4. Speak Up. If your situation is not allowing you to meet the expectations of your teachers, please let us know. We are human, too! We understand and we just want to know that you are making it through this tough time so that at some point we can see each other face to face and move forward with our lives again. Ghosting us makes us lose sleep thinking the absolute worst thoughts.
Music Genres Worksheets & Listening Log Process:
- This week’s genres are: o #21 Disco & Funk
§ The Listening Log has a grayed-out area to separate the Disco songs from the Funk songs. No one wants to listen to 4-5 disco songs, so we are condensing this into just two songs each and trying to save paper. You should still think about similarities in sound across the listening examples as disco by itself and funk by itself. These two genres are quite distinct from each other.
o #22 Easy-Listening § This is a great genre to listen to when you need some peaceful quiet time to
relax, take a nap, meditate. I usually turn the lights off in class and we all just chill out during this one.
- By now, you should be well versed in the instructions for the worksheet and listening logs. If you have any questions, please reference the previous week packets.
Notation Unit 3: Lesson 4 – Grand Staff and the Piano with Octave Numbers - Teacher Feedback:
o Note names should always be written in capital letters. o “E” and “F” should be clearly written so you can see the bottom line on “E”.
- There are several instructional videos on the new website. Please watch them and read through the lesson pages and take notes. If you get stuck, please reach out for help. Here are the video links if you want to type it:
o Lessons 1-3 Review and a bit about the Grand Staff: https://youtu.be/qhnc13MCy-c o Middle C: https://youtu.be/I39Poqbu3Ik o What is an octave?: https://youtu.be/fV-p9n7upMc o Octave Numbers: https://youtu.be/1YglN78gLRo
- Please read ALL the instructions on the piano page carefully. People often skip a step here. Use whatever coloring utensils you may have available. Substituting colors is acceptable if you do not have a color. Just write down what the substitution is in the key.
- You will need to complete page 37 by physically writing/coloring on the page. Then take a picture or scan to turn in and upload them into your personal google drive turn in folder “P4 – Your Name”.
- YOU DO NOT NEED TO fill in the two questions about what is your highest and lowest note. I usually do an entire exercise in class where we have a lot of fun figuring out who in class has the highest and lowest note in their voice. It’s not possible right now so those two lines won’t count.
Turn In Check List:
- Create a “Week 6” folder within your turn in google drive folder “P4 – Name” and make sure your work is sorted into the correct folder so Mrs. Shanker can find it and grade it easily.
o Please name your files with the name of the assignment and your name. - Worksheet Questions #21 Disco & Funk – Answer in the google form on the new website. - Listening Log #21 Disco & Funk – Put in Google Drive folder. - Worksheet Questions #22 Easy-Listening – Answer in the google form on the new website. - Listening Log #22 Easy-Listening – Put in Google Drive folder. - Notation Unit 3 Lesson 4 pages 37 – Put in Google Drive folder.
Contact Mrs. Shanker with:
- REMIND - E-MAIL – Best email is: [email protected]
o Always include your name first and last and which class you are in.
ALL assignments for each week are due on the following Monday. Week 6 Work is Due Monday, May 18th
