Disruptive Change and the Implications for
Our Industry
2015 Spring Senior Executives Meeting
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Boston, Massachusetts May 3-‐5, 2015
2015 Spring Senior Executives Meeting 2
Harvard Business School Professor Clay Christensen popularized the concept of market disruption and coined the term “disruptive innovation” (a product or service that creates a new market, often initially for a different set of consumers, and a unique value network that eventually displaces an existing market and value). However, disruption is broader than technology and encompasses “any influence that drastically alters or destroys the existing structure.” In the life science, analytical and diagnostics space, several influences threaten to fundamentally disrupt the future direction and growth. These influences include: technology such as Next Gen Sequencing with its many dimensions and applications, and the challenges associated with aggregating and interpreting big sets of data; geographical as the global economy/geopolitical dynamics and markets especially in China and the BRIC countries evolve; business model as companies grow, expand internationally and develop business in the diagnostics and research space; and government due to regulation, e.g., of LDTs as technology migrates from life science to diagnostics, and compliance, enforcement, and import/export barriers. Our 2015 Spring Senior Executives Meeting will offer strategic insights and advice on several potentially disruptive influences. We’ll examine some breakthrough technologies that will transform business, society and our industry over the next several years. Ian Bremmer, who was impressive at our 2013 Spring Meeting, will update the geopolitical outlook and assess influences shaping the global markets. Other speakers will examine disruptive technologies including Next Generation Sequencing and how they will change medicine, and the impact of the changing regulatory landscape on our industry’s markets and products. Completing our program will be a presentation from a highly regarded author on how the next 15 years will transform competition, customers and companies, and the highlights of his recent book, “Resilience: Why Things Bounce Back”.

1:30 PM Disruptive Technologies in Genomic Medicine
Jochen Lennerz, M.D., Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School, and Department of Pathology & Center for Integrated Diagnostics, Mass General Hospital
Next generation sequencing is expected be a disruptive technology in healthcare, and has many dimensions. Contending “we are far from recognizing the full potential of next-‐gen sequencing”, Dr. Jochen “Joe” Lennerz, an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and a member of the Center for Integrated Diagnostics team at Mass General Hospital, will review NGS and examine the components required for clinical next-‐generation testing. These components range from wet-‐lab and microfluidics, via server-‐technologies and non-‐relational databases, to integrated reporting tools and hospital information systems. Integrating these components into a functioning unit results in a clear outline of the discovery potential in routine diagnostics, the future capabilities, and a good handle on what’s currently missing. The Changing Regulatory Landscape as a Potential Disruptive Force Lakshman Ramamurthy, Ph.D. Director Avalere Health LLC Dr. Ramamurthy advises pharmaceutical, device and diagnostics companies on medical device regulation issues and how to incorporate a FDA regulatory strategy into business planning. In addition, he provides analysis and advice to pharma and device companies as well as to financial entities investing in device and diagnostics companies. Previously he worked in several senior level and policy positions at FDA, and is currently serving as an Industry Representative on the CMS-‐Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory committee. In this presentation, Dr. Ramamurthy will offer a high level and strategic view of the future of the changing regulation landscape including LDTs and the implications for companies in our industry. 4:00 PM End of Monday’s Program 6:00 PM Reception and Dinner

Resilience and Transformation: Thriving in an Age of Volatility
Andrew Zolli
Author, “Resilience: Why Things Bounce Back”
Andrew Zolli works at the intersection of global innovation, foresight, social change and resilience. A central thrust of his work is how to harness the power of networks for collaborative discovery, innovation and change. Mr. Zolli also spends much of his time advancing a global dialogue on resilience – how to help people and systems persist, recover and thrive amid disruption. For several years, he traveled from the coral reefs of Palau to the back streets of Palestine exploring these issues – the results are encapsulated in his book, Resilience: Why Things Bounce Back. His work since has focused on bringing together coalitions of interested practitioners and leaders from many resilience-‐related fields. From 2003-‐2014, Andrew was the primary creative and curatorial force behind PopTech, a renowned innovation and social change network. The group brings together innovators from many different fields to share ideas and to work on new approaches to some of the world’s toughest problems. In our Tuesday presentation, Mr. Zolli will explore how the next 15 years will transform competition, customers and companies, and present the highlights of his most recent book, “Resilience: Why Things Bounce Back”. 10:00 AM Wrap-‐Up and Adjournment
