Melinda Ring, MD Director Disrupt the Pain Cycle With Integrative Medicine We’ve officially entered the busiest time of year, when obligations pile up and todo lists lengthen. Stress is a wellknown modulator of pain perception, impacting individuals in different ways depending on factors like their genetic makeup, environmental factors and life experiences. For those with chronic pain, the season’s increased demands may lead to worsening symptoms. Many patients who end up in their physician’s office for pain are prescribed medications that can provide shortterm relief, without necessarily addressing underlying factors or providing tools to help patients break the pain cycle. As the number of overdose deaths due to opioids continues to rise, we have to find a safer way to help. Our team at the Osher Center aims to do just that. Chronic pain is the No. 1 reason people seek integrative medicine. Acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, tai chi, meditation and other mindbody approaches are helping millions of people find relief. Disrupt the Pain Cycle With Integrative MedicineWe’ve officially entered the busiest time ofyear, when obligations pile up and todo listslengthen. Stress is a wellknown modulatorof pain perception, impacting individuals indifferent ways depending on factors like theirgenetic makeup, environmental factors andlife experiences. For those with chronic pain,the season’s increased demands may leadto worsening symptoms.

Many patients who end up in their physician’s office for pain areprescribed medications that can provide shortterm relief, withoutnecessarily addressing underlying factors or providing tools tohelp patients break the pain cycle. As the number of overdosedeaths due to opioids continues to rise, we have to find a saferway to help. Our team at the Osher Center aims to do just that. Experience the benefits of tai chi and other exercises atMindBody Community Day on January 19.

The national academic integrative medicine organization, theAcademic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health, sharesexpert resources on moving beyond medications, including apocket guide for physicians and summaries of complementaryoptions for chronic pain management and wellbeing. Many ofthese treatments are offered at the Osher Center. One nonprescription option increasingly being used by patients tocombat pain is cannabidiol (CBD) oil. CBD, a compound found inthe cannabis family of plants, has antiinflammatory andneuromodulating properties. Studies on the clinical benefit of CBDare sparse but much needed. We have partnered on a multicenterresearch study with the integrative medicine programs atUniversity of California, San Francisco and University of California,San Diego. This study investigates who uses CBDrich productsand why, in what form and dose, and perceived effectiveness. If you’ve used a CBDrich product in the last four weeks and areinterested in participating in the study, [email protected]. The anonymous, online surveytakes 10 to 15 minutes to complete. As this year quickly comes to an end, I encourage you to pause ona regular basis to give gratitude for whatever brings meaning toyour life. Amid troubling news and stressful days, the simple act ofremembrance — especially when tied to feelings of love andappreciation — provide balance. Enjoy connecting with whateverbrings you lightness — with family and friends, furry creatures,nature or art — even through the hustle and bustle. Help liftyourself, others and our earth with selfcompassion, kind words toanother person and acts of random kindness.

The conference will include a research poster session. Northwestern University faculty, staff,trainees, students and community research partners were invited to submit an abstract forpresentation. MindBody Community Day: Saturday, January 19, 2019, 9 am to 3 pmBoth health professionals and community members are invited to experience the benefits of mindbody approaches, such as tai chi, meditation and guided imagery, during our halfday symposium.Our annual community education events were created to honor and benefit the communities we areprivileged to serve. New President of Philanthropic Advisory CouncilThe Osher Center recently welcomed Lori Lymanas the new president of our philanthropic advisorycouncil, IM AWARE, which stands for IntegrativeMedicine: Advising With Awareness, Resources, and Education. Lyman’s vision is aligned with the council’s vision— to help integrative medicine become everyone’severyday medicine, and to raise awareness,provide guidance and contribute funds in supportof the Osher Center. “I bring to the council mydesire to promote continued research andeducation,” she says. “Our goal is to continue growing the council to help others understand the benefits of integrativemedicine and its ability to positively impact the lives of others,” says Lyman, who brings aprofessional history of creating healthy outdoor living environments and who recently built a LEED(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) goldcertified home. “Healthy, inspiringenvironments contribute to the integrative medicine goal of achieving optimal wellbeing.” Lyman’s concerns about the increase in fast food consumption and the fast pace of life inspired herto participate in the council. “How we choose to source our food and the environments in which wesupport our mental health lead us to overall health and longevity,” she says. Jim Karas, founder of Intelligent Fitness & Wellness, served as president of the council from 2014to 2018. One of his goals was to increase the number of council members. During his time aspresident, the council grew from less than a dozen to more than 30 individuals who are passionateabout the power of integrative medicine to empower people to reach their optimal health.Subscribe to our email list
