JOINING WITH JUNIORS

Coming soon! To Milwaukee's Pilgrim Lutheran School - KIDPEX - the second annual stamp exhibition geared with the youth collector in mind. The date for this year's show is October 28 which also happens to be the date set aside as National Youth Stamp Collector's Day. The theme of the show will focus on Prehistoric Animals.

Plans are already underway for making this year's event bigger and better than last year. Youth are invited to enter 2-4 page exhibits of a topical nature. A "Stamps Tell a Story" contest will allow the participant to find a stamp and tell in 100 words or less the story of the stamp.

In addition, a variety of educational programs and activities are planned. An attempt is being made to invite youth oriented organizations such as the Scouts, 4-H, and others to the show.

If you were a participant in last year's exhibition, you will receive notification again this year. If you know a youth organization or individual that you would like to e·ncourage to enter, please send for further information from MaryAnn Bowman, P.O. Box 1451, Waukesha, WI 53187.

To enable the committee to continue planning for KIDPEX, a donation of stamps, covers and other philatelic material is being made. It is hoped that we can prepare packets of at least 25 different stamps.

Attention refunders! Also needed are the UPC codes from the bottoms of the following Post cereals: Alpha-bits, Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, Honeycomb, Super Golden Crisp, Smurf Magic Berries, and Croonchy Stars. (Sorry for the commercial -we really do need them for the project.) Please send by July 15, 1989.

Although the Wisconsin Federation of Stamp Clubs does lend its support and name to the KIDPEX function, at the present the WFSC lends no financial support to the program.

Many projects connected with youth philately often are accomplished without funding and are undertaken and supported by individuals who believe in the cause. I am pleased to announce that the Waukesha County Philatelic Society has voted to support a budget of $100 for use in~ promoting youth philately in Waukesha County this year.

A very special thank you for two kind and generous supporters of youth philately: Don Kirki and Paul Revolinski who have been frequen~ contributors to my requests.

Until next time, think young. youth philately!!

WHAT IS THE FORTY ET EIGHT?

Organization La Societe des Quaranta Hemmes et Huit Chevaux an

independant fraternal organization of Veterans, popul~rly know as the FORTY ET EIGHT, is the fun and honor society of American Legionnaires. Now composed of the Veterans of both World Wars, the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts, it draws its origin from World War I when young Americans were sent to France to fight a war to end all wars. The narrow gauge railroads of France had box-cars (Voitures) that carried little more than half the capacity of American boxcars and these voitures were used to transport the men and horses to and from the fighting fronts. On the side of these little box-cars was stenciled the capacity of each. Holding either forty men or eight horses these voitures became the trade mark of our organization. If you could laugh at the train ride from the coast of France to the trenches crowded in these little box-cars only recently vacated by eight horses, one could surely adapt to the changes in his life when he returned home. The FORTY ET EIGHT was organized in 1920 as the fun and honor society of the American Legion. Membership in the Forty et Eight is recognition for service to the American Legion and/or its programs.

Nurses Training In 1955, the Voyageurs Militaire recognized the shortage

of Registered Nurses and began to provide the financial assistance in scholarships to those who enrolled for this training. With 1892 students receiving over $643,000. in scholarships this past year, the FORTY ET EIGHT has granted in excess of eight and one-half millions of dollars since the inception of this program.

Americanism ~y vi_rtuc of being Veterans who have served their country

In its trme of -~re_atest ~eed, the fun loving, hard working Voyageurs M1hta1re maintain a strong commitment to the American way of life. Americanism projects, respectforthe Flag, Constitution, Law and Order and the proven willingne~s _t? defend these principles is evident in the day to day act1v1t1es of the members of our society.

Purpose Th_e Voyageurs Militaire of the FORTY ET EIGHT ask for

nothing ?xcept to ~erve their_fellow human beings and by that serv1_ce to provide our children with a safe, free land of opportunity and to further provide for the adequate defense of the greatest system of government devised by the mind of man.

A COUPLE OF IDEAS FROM TWO OF OUR CLUBS.

{Reprinted from the Green Bay PHILATELIC SOCIETY Newsletter.)

Philatelic Concert-On Wed. April 19, Ruth Fisher ani Clete Delvaux representing GBPS at the Commmiversity Wind Ensemble• s concert _called · 11A Philatelic Concert", honoring composers on Postage Stamps"·• Ruth ~d . Clete arrived at the West DePere High School Auditorium about 6:30PM and set up the eight-frame exhibit. Ralph Reeves had organized three frames: Don Kimps, two:. amd Clete, the club frame (with Stamps contributed by Ray Perry Bill Feldhausen, and Clete. One of the concert condu~tors, Clare Hounsel, also contributed two frames from his collection.

b.

The many concert-goers wh~ examined the exhibit before the concert and during the intermission made the work that went into the franes a worthwhile endeavor. At the April meeting, Ralph Reeves indicated that he had enjoyed putting together his frames, Cl.ete Delvaux sort of admitted that he enjoyed it too. Ralph suggested that like-minded club members might think about doing more of this type of promotion for our Club, and for Stamp Collecting in general. Can we find someone to organize such an activity'? WHAT ABOUT AN EXHIBIT CF BIRDS AND ANU!AI.S ON STAHPS AT THE NEW GREh1•1 BAY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY FACILITIES?
