I would also like to thank Dave Barkwell for helping in transporting the Colour Parties back and forth from the parade head. A very special thanks to Kim Van Hoof for making the beef stew that was so good, especially on a cold day. The parade was well attended by the people of Whitby, in fact it is the most people that I have seen at the parade. I would also like to thank Judy Pardy, Fred Taylor and Dave Barkwell for providing the Colour Party for the presentation of the youth education awards. I would like to acknowledge Bob Murphy for all his help with carrying the Colours for the branch, as well as all the help he has given me over the years as Sgt. At Arms. Bob has decided that for health reasons he has to step down from carrying the Colours. Thank you Bob for all your help. Bob Hartley, Sgt At Arms, Whitby Legion

The Colour Party recently marched in the Whitby Santa Claus parade and did a great job of representing our Legion. I would like to thank the following members for attending the parade, John Gale, Kim Van Hoof, Kelly Rogers, Robert K Smith, Judy Pardy, Fred Taylor, Ron Asselstine and I would also like to thank the Bowmanville Colour Party for attending the parade. John Greenfield, the Sgt. At Arms for Bowmanville is a very organized and professional guy and although he was sick and could not attend, he did a great job of having his Colour Party attend.

OTTAWA, ON, 22 January 2015 – Dominion Command of The Royal Canadian Legion is seeking candidates who may wish to participate in the world’s largest walking/marching event held in mid-July in the Nijmegen area of Holland. “Every year we receive dozens of applications from our members to participate in this march on behalf of the Legion,” says Royal Canadian Legion Dominion President Tom Eagles. Photo_VimyNijmegen_square“The Legion’s interest in the Canadian Armed Forces Nijmegen March Team extends back more than ten years ago when it began making an annual grants to the Canadian Armed Forces’ team to enable them to visit Vimy Ridge” says Mr. Eagles. “Since 2004, the CAF has reciprocated by welcoming the participation of a Legionnaire in the team at CAF expense,” adds Mr. Eagles. For the military, the Nijmegen March entails four days of walking more than 40kms per day with a 10kgs backpack for each soldier. Historically, more than 7,000 military from all over the world participate in this event and an additional 40,000 civilians also take part without the backpack requirement. Reader Submissions Bob Peddle, passes on a few predictions from 1955 America. Original author unknown.

I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $10.00.

Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $2,000.00 will only buy a used one.

If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit; 20 cents a pack is ridiculous.

Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging 7 cents just to mail a letter.

If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.

When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 25 cents a gallon. Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage.

I’m afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable got by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.

14

Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $50,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn’t surprise me if someday they’ll be making more than the President. I never thought I’d

see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They're even making electric typewriters now.

It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.

It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.

15

If they think I’ll pay 30 cents for a haircut, forget it.

The fast food restaurant is convenient for a quick meal, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.

I read the other day where some scientist thinks it’s possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .

I’m afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.

Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to government.

There is no sense going on short trips anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $2.00 a night to stay in a hotel.

No one can afford to be sick anymore. At $15.00 a day in the hospital, it’s too rich for my blood.

HMCS Whitby

Commissioned at Midland on June 6, 1944, she did not arrive at Halifax until August 16, owing to a layover en route at Shelburne for repairs. Following workups in Bermuda in September she sailed direct to St. John's, arriving on September 30, and was assigned to EG C-4. She left St. John's on October 5 for Londonderry to join the group, with which she was to serve for the balance of the war. Whitby left Londonderry for Canada in mid-June, 1945, and was paid off on July 16 and placed in reserve at Sorel. She was sold in 1946 for merchant service and reportedly renamed Bengo.
