Success StoryJohn and Kathryn

John and Kathryn had both been members of Great Expectations for six months when the pair selected each other at a speed dating event. They both decided to join Great Expectations because they were looking for a higher quality dating experience. John proposed to Kathryn this past March and the pair married June 5, 2012 in Tuscany, and plan on continuing the celebration in Maui. When people ask about their experience with Great Expectations they respond saying that you get out of it what you put into it. Congratulations to the happy couple!

DARK STAR ORCHESTRA LIVE AT MIM

Continuing the Grateful Dead Concert Experience

Monday, April 1st at 7pm

Performing Grateful Dead classics in the same way that an orchestra interprets music of classical composers, the Dark Star Orchestra selects from among the nearly 2,500 shows that the Grateful Dead performed during their thirty-year tenure as fathers of improvisational rock.

The composer spirit is derived and channeled as the musicians capture the excitement and innovation of the original performances and compositions. On most performances, the Dark Star Orchestra presents the complete original set list, song by song and in consecutive order, while adapting their phrasing, voice arrangements, and specific musical equipment for the various eras of the Grateful Dead shows that they perform.

Members of the Grateful Dead themselves, including rhythm guitarist/singer Bob Weir, drummer Bill Kreutzmann, vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux, and keyboardists Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten, have appeared on stage and performed with the Dark Star Orchestra.

Using entire shows from the Grateful Dead’s thirty years of

extensive touring as a launching pad, the Dark Star Orchestra recreates the original song-for-song performance set list for an entirely new generation of Deadheads. Touring nationwide for nine years to the tune of 1,300 shows since forming, the band’s determined commitment to “raising the Dead” has drawn national media attention.

Tickets: $36.50–$39.50. Circle of Friends donors who give $500+ annually are eligible for 10% off concert tickets. Call 480-478-6000 or visit www.themim.org for more information.

REVIEWERS, ROUNDTABLE

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Mental’Toni Collette plays a char-ismatic, crazy hothead who transforms a family’s life when she becomes the nanny of five girls whose mother has cracked from her hus-band’s political ambitions and infidelity. (NR - 116 minutes)

Joseph: “Mental” begins with plenty of promise, opening with a woman singing and dancing next to a clothes-line in a shabby Australian backyard as though she is

Julie Andrews in “The Sound of Music.” Unfortunately, save for a sprinkle of such ec-centric ingenuity here and there throughout its nearly 2-hour runtime, writer/direc-tor P.J. Hogan’s new dramedy never again matches said sequence’s creative flair. Moreover, the movie - which, among other things, tackles the topic of mental illness - ironically suffers from a bipolar disorder in which it asks us to laugh one moment and cry the next with nary enough time in between each tonal U-turn. (Grade: D)

‘Ginger & Rosa’Elle Fanning and Alice Englert play inseparable friends who, while growing up in 1960s London, find their relationship redefined as the Cuban Missile Crisis looms. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 - 89 minutes)

Stan: Writer/director Sally Potter’s latest triggered that long suppressed memory of my parents and grandmother in October of 1962, huddled and grasping for any news of the stalemate that was occur-ring. I was about to turn 16 that month, a sophomore in high school, and quite perturbed that my birthday was taking second place. This view of teens, from across the waters on the other side of the planet, puts into perspective the total-ity of the psychological effect through the eyes of young-stersgrappling to understand it all. Looking back on that time through ‘Ginger & Rosa’ eyes, let’s not ever come that close again. (Grade: C+)

Joseph: Nearly every actor who appears in writer/director Sally Potter’s new drama “Ginger & Rosa” deserves a standing

ovation. However, the only standing that anyone is likely to do for the film itself is the kind that is required when walking out. Although it is always nice when a movie transports view-ers to another time and place, this particular motion picture’s purpose in doing so gets somewhat lost along the way. However, if watching characters wander around aimlessly while spouting philosophies that were placed between their lips lacking any finesse from the filmmaker whatsoever sounds like fun to you, then - by all means - have at it. (Grade: D)

‘Wrong’Jack Plotnick plays a man who, desperate to reunite with his lost dog, embarks on an absurd journey that includes an encounter with an enig-matic pony-tailed guru (William Fichtner) who teaches him how to metaphysically reconnect with his pet. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR - 94 minutes)

Stan: The quirky, off-center, and often irreverent portray-

als in writer/director Quentin Dupieux’s latest is that stark re-minder of some of the residents in my senior living complex who treat their animal com-panions as if they are human children, to the extent that one neighbor who will undoubtedly never speak me again should this review find her eyes. When ever she and the dog out, it’s in a baby carriage. When I see that, I want to ask ‘Why’, which is also resounded throughout the film, and as I think about it, its that question that’s sure to elicit a multitude of answers which could be the underlying purpose of the filmmaker, to ask the question.(Grade: C)

Joseph: There is one question that will plague your thoughts each and every solitary second while watching “Wrong.” That question is: “Why?” To say that the new comedy from writer/director Quentin Dupieux does not make any sense whatsoever is an unabashed understate-ment. It is certain to be the most mentally incompetent motion picture that you see all year. However, that pin-nacle level of preposterousness is precisely what makes the movie so astonishingly amus-ing. Having said that, Dupieux does have trouble keeping such a thin story interesting through-out despite a relatively brief runtime - especially compared to his whacky work of genius “Rubber.” (Grade: C)

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHTThe following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actress Sara Rue (‘Dorfman in Love’) By Joseph J. Airdo

Writer/Director Sally Potter (‘Ginger & Rosa’) By Stan Robinson

“It is a really sweet love story but it is also about this woman finding her voice - figuring out who she is and then sharing that with the world. I think that is the one thing that we all as people have a hard time with. At least I do. Who am I really? What do I really believe in? What is actu-ally important to me? We get so swept up in sort of what the media tells us to care about and all these other influences that we really have to dig down deep and figure out what is it that we as human beings really care about and want for ourselves. When you figure that out, you see who you really are.

“It is so interesting. The older that we get and the different

stages we go through in life, it seems like we become differ-ent people. But I think that the truth is you are always the same person. You just discover these new things about yourself. I think that is what this character is do-ing. It is about self-discovery and embracing that self. It is about finding your voice and embrac-ing that voice.

“I really loved playing this char-acter and hope that people will go out and see the movie. It is based on [screenwriter Wendy Kout’s] life story. She was on set every single day and I was able to draw a lot of the character from her. That was really gift. We made this movie for not a lot of money. The one thing that this

movie has is a lot of heart. There is a lot of passion behind the making of this film. I think how much people cared about this movie while we were making it comes across in the film and that is really refreshing.” – Sara Rue

“I always think its rather mys-terious how films finally come onto the page, I’ve written all my films and its still a mystery to me how the ideas really arrive, its seems to be like a moment sit-ting down and facing the blank page because I still write long hand on paper but it like looking into the void, into this kind of blankness and into that blank-ness comes an image of a film as if its already made, so I often feel as if all I’m doing is looking into this screen in my brain and writing down what I see there. I don’t know if that’s a trick of the mind, but that the way in which I write and of course those im-ages and thoughts come from a mixture of memory, observation, and the imagination where you put together things from your experience as well as things you don’t know about and imagine yourself into them.

“This is a story with universal themes even though it’s set in a different time, and as we now are facing what could be the end of the world through possibly climate change, its good to look at how the human race managed to survive an earlier time when it

seemed that the world might end in 1962. This story is also of the human universal themes of love, and disappointment, and hope.” – Sally Potter

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

Actress Ashley Benson (‘Spring Breakers’)By Joseph J. Airdo

Writer/Director Quentin Dupieux (‘Wrong’)By Stan Robinson

“We were kind of intimidated by [James Franco]. It was actually scary for us. He has this weird accent and does not look like somebody that you see every day. I think that we were all very much in our characters’ heads and mindsets. Our characters are drawn to him because he was hardcore just like us but we were very skeptical of him. He was intimidating and scary and that is how our characters kind of viewed themselves. I think there are only a few moments when we thought that he was funny and those were when he was making jokes or being charming and cute.

“It is so upsetting when people think of it as [exploitive] because it’s not. That is just [director Harmony Korine’s] style. It is not grotesque. It is not trying to exploit people. We are not naked throughout the film. Even during our sex scene, we purposely didn’t show things because we

didn’t want to. Harmony was never like, ‘You need to be naked for this film.’ It is just a part of the story - and it is very real.

“For instance, the scene where [Rachel Korine’s character] is topless with all of those college boys - that is a very real sit-uation that happens to girls all of the time when they have too much to drink. And it could have been a very bad situation. It could have lead to rape or whatever and Harmony makes sure to show things like that because it is very real. I don’t think that this film exploited us in any way. I think that it just showed a different side to us. We were playing these crazy girls. And it was such a great opportunity for us to be a part of because people haven’t seen us do anything like this before.” – Ashley Benson

“When I started writing ‘Wrong’, it was a that precise moment the perfect timing for what I wanted to do, and I don’t why the story came to me, I was writing down some thoughts and suddenly every started mak-ing sense. It was two years ago that I started writing it and it fell into place. The script for ‘Wrong’ was 74 pages and we shot the film in 22 days. We were shooting pretty fast, some days we were accomplishing 8 minutes of finished segments a day, other days with complicated settings and circumstances we were able to only shoot a minute and a half of completed sequences.

“You asked me to ‘pitch’ the story of ‘Wrong’ to you, if I did, it would seem like a very bad movie [chuckle], it’s the story of a guy who lost his dog and he’s trying everything he can and suddenly he realizes that there’s this strange guru who kidnapped the dog… At this point the man I’m pitching to say’s enough, stop, stop. But, when I have a chance to give my script to them to read, I’ve been lucky. The script is a lot better than any ‘pitch’ I can make in person. I have to say, all of my movies, I’ll settle for get-ting them read as opposed to pitching the

concept and it has worked for getting them made.” – Quentin Dupieux

The Phoenix Film Festival is proud to announce the 13th annual edi-tion April 4– 11, 2013, and is plan-ning its biggest and best festival ever. The best way to keep up on the festival and activities is the website at http://PhoenixFilmFes-tival.com where you can join their mailing list and “Like” the festival on Facebook.

The Phoenix Film Festival has been named one of ‘The 25 Coolest Film Festivals’ by MovieMaker Magazine and is a program of the 501c(3) non-profit Phoenix Film Founda-tion. The festival was started in

2000 by independent filmmakers as an opportunity to showcase independent filmmaking and it has quickly become Arizona’s largest film festival.

The 8-day festival annually screens over 140 films, holds amazing parties, and provides filmmaking seminars all in one convenient lo-cation with the parties and work-shops being held right on site. The Phoenix Film Festival is held on 7 screens at the Harkins Scottsdale 101, 7000 E. Mayo Blvd, Phoenix, AZ 85054.

Phoenix Film Festival - 13th Year

“Moonlight Mile” (2002): Sarandon is heartbreaking as the mother of a deceased woman whose fiance wants to move on.

“Stepmom” (1998): Combining grit and vulnerability, Sarandon is perfect as a divorced mother with little tolerance for her ex-husband’s new love.

“The Witches of Eastwick” (1987): Together with Cher and Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarandon offers a terrific representation of novelist John Updike’s trio of small-town sorceresses.

“Atlantic City” (1980): Sarandon and Burt Lancaster as an aging mobster make a great team.

SuSan Sarandon’S Top MovieS

By Stan Robinson

The guiding force of the Phoenix Film Festival is Executive Director Jason Carney. It’s a tall challenge and Jason speaks fondly of the festival with the glee of excite-ment in his eyes!

“As executive director of the Phoenix Film Festival, I also run the Phoenix Film Foundation which is the non-profit that puts on the festival and the other activities the foundation is in-volved with. I report to the board of directors and I over see all of the festival operations as well as our filmmaker membership group, the Phoenix Film Society which is our monthly screening group, and the student festival which all falls

under the non-profit banner.

“The Phoenix Film Festival is 140 films over 8 days with 4 parties, so we have a little bit of something for everyone! We’ve films, we’ve got workshops, we’ve got parties, we’ve got filmmakers, and it’s the biggest film party in the state so you don’t want to miss that! We create this great community for 8 days and it all takes place in one place, in one location, which is re-ally unusual for a festival this size. It’s like you said, one gets to inter-active with filmgoers, filmmakers, and get to interact over 8 days. So come on out, see some great films, interact with marvelous filmmakers, and take in a party or two!” – Jason Carney

Horror and Sci-Fi at Phoenix Film Festival By Randy Montgomery

The International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival takes places at the Phoenix Film Festival (April 4-11) and features eight showcase films, six competition features and four shorts programs. Festival Director Andrea Beesley is excited about the selections and guests. Beesley is raving about The Ghastly Love of Johnny X. “It was the last film shot on Kodak’s black and white stock. It’s a beautiful looking film. We have the director here on Friday and the following Wednes-day, we have the star.” Meg Foster will be in attendance for They Live, the horror classic. “I’ve heard people talk about what a great guest she is. It should be

awesome to have her at the festi-val,” says Beesley.

Former Lions Gate Producer and current FEARnet President Peter Block will be visiting the festival to present Saw. “His credentials are pretty impressive”, says Beesley. “He produced pretty much every Lions Gate horror feature. Fan will enjoy the chance to interact with him.” Teller (Penn & Teller) will present Play Dead With Teller. “This movie is really unique. It’s a filmed version of a stage show performed in New York. It should be terrifying and fun,” says Beesley. “Teller should be an interesting guest…everyone knows him as the silent one. Don’t forget about the Shorts. Every year the programmers up their game.”

Milagro, meaning miracle in Span-ish, is what you will experience at this Mexican-American fusion with European influences and a South American flair cuisine.

On Saturday, April 6th from 11am to 4pm, the Arcadia restaurant will host Growl on the Patio, an event to debut their new dog friendly patio, as well as their new growler program.

Beer-lovers will be able to en-joy their favorite drafts at home

with the Milagro Grill Growler, a refillable half-gallon amber glass jug. Milagro Grill’s four premium Mexican beers and craft domestic beers, including Mud Shark and Four Peaks, are ideal to transport in a growler and enjoy in the con-fines of your home.

An array of specials will be of-fered throughout the event. This includes a discounted price on growler jugs for $8 each (regularly $10 each) and $12 to fill the growl-er (regularly $15 to fill). Milagro Grill will also offer $3 Mud Shark draft beer and their seasonal $6 Sonoran Hot Dog.

However, specials are not limited to bipedal guests. Canines can enjoy dog food samples from boutique pet shop Noble Beast. Samples will include specialty dog food such as Innova, Evo, Natural Balance, Fromm and Zuke’s. There will also be giveaways for growlers

and assorted pet products.

In addition, photos will be taken of dogs attending the event, which will be posted to Facebook later that eve-ning. The dog with the most “likes” by Sat-urday, April 13th at 11am will win a $50 gift card to Milagro Grill!

Even if you’re not a beer lover, don’t worry you can grab a glass of Sangria Roja, Ruffino Pinot Grigio, Bogle Chardon-nay, Wilson Daniels Pinot Noir, Wilson Daniels Cab Sauvignon or choose some other great wines they

have available. The best part is that the wines listed here are avail-able every weekday from 3:30pm-6:30pm for only $5 a glass. Now you can start enjoying your wine and pup at this great location!

If you are a wine lover, the past 10 years have been an exciting time to live – and drink – in Arizona. From Verde Valley to Sonoita to Willcox, vineyards and wineries across this great state have worked hard to earn national taste awards, market their regions as tourism hot spots and partner with some of the biggest and best culinary events here and beyond.

But, you know when you can really tell an industry – wine or otherwise – has really made it?

When they are able to pay it forward and give back to their communities-at-large.

One of the most impressive examples of how our Arizona wine region is giving back is happening on April 6th as five local wineries – in partnership with Alliance Beverage and Sonoran Brewing Company – will help transform the Phoenix Children’s Museum’s 48,000 square feet of hands-on, fun and educational activities for children aged newborn to 10 into a distinctly adult “Big Top” black-tie gala complete withdazzling aerial performances, celebrity chefs clowning around and whimsically wonderful wines.

The event – Cirque de Musée – is a new concept to both the wineries participating and the museum itself. While fundraisers at the museum note each year it hosts a large-scale gala to help support its Every Child Program, which provides free or reduced museum admission to families battling financial, emotional or circumstantial challenges, the sheer magnitude of this gala, not to mention its Cirque-focused theme, is something totally new to even the most seasoned event-goer in Arizona.

The impressive schedule of events kicks off at 6pm with cocktails, a silent auction and a culinary adventure hosted by hot Valley Chefs Rita French of Province, Stephen Toevs of Bistro 24, Jason Alford from Roka Akor Steak & Sushi, Beau MacMillan of elements, Michael Lamey from Meritage Steak House, Jay Bogsinske from District American Kitchen & Wine Bar, and Stephen Stromberg from Sapporo Scottsdale.

Next, guests will be escorted into another area of the Museum, literally transformed into the “Big Top.” Starting at 8pm ringleader and long-time museum supporter Chef Eddie Matney will be serving his own cirque-inspired, three-course dinner as the Circus School of Arizona and Gregangelo& Velocity Arts & Entertainment perform awe-inspiring circus acts.

Starting at 10pm guests will venture into yet another hall of the Museum for the grand finale – the VIP After Party. Think Cirque de Soleil meets Las Vegas nightclub meets Arizona Wine.

While a guest DJ acts as ringleader and even more local celebrity chefs clown around as they serve up late night bites and desserts, Arizona wine will come front and center by hosting its own tasting room until 1am. Guests will have to juggle reds and whites as five Arizona wineries bring their best and brightest collections for the cause. For those interested in the full night’s acts, tickets are $500. However, if looking to simply support our Arizona Wineries as they give back, After-Party tickets are only $125 and inclusive all of wine tastings, small bites, desserts, music and entertainment. This Easter Raising Cane’s is on the hunt to end hunger by donating 100 percent of profits to Valley of the Sun United Way on Sunday, March 31. According to United Way, over 82,000 Valley households do not know where their next meal is coming from. That’s enough dinner tables to reach the top of Camelback Mountain 130 times and the very reason Arizona Raising Cane’s locations are helping combat this staggering number. Raising Cane’s Phoenix and Tempe locations will also be accepting canned goods

on March 31. Valley residents who donate will be entered for a chance to win free Cane’s for one year. For additional information on locations, times and how to spread the word to end hunger, please visit www.ilovecanes.com.

Mention beer from Germany and most people think of one of two things. Either Oktoberfest or the mass produced lagers, mostly pilsners that we can buy relatively inexpensively in the United States. German beer is so much more than that. In fact, I will let you in on a little secret, some of these beers are not even made in Germany. But that isn’t what we are here to talk about, so let’s get to the topic of the rest of German beers.

German beer styles are as varied as the different cities throughout the country. Granted most of them are lagers or wheat beers, but the brewers in this country really show you how to make these two styles that many people take for granted.

Koelsch is a hybrid beer that comes from the town of Cologne. By agreement, this beer is only produced in Cologne. Legend has it that at one point, in order to call your beer a koelsch, you had to be able to see the steeple of the Cologne Cathedral from your

brewery. This beautiful cathedral, which dates back to 1248 and stands 515 feet high, was originally built to house the remains of the Three Wise Men of biblical fame. The light, straw colored beer is first warm fermented and then cold conditioned which crates different flavor profiles than a traditional style lager. Light with a pronounced, but not extreme, hoppiness, this beer is traditionally sold in 10 oz stange style glasses, a short glass with straight sides. A waiter will come to your table with a tray full of these beers and mark off how many he leaves you. At the end you settle up based on the number of tick marks made on his sheet and move on. Fruh is one of the better known Koelsch breweries.

Just a short hop up the Rhine River from Cologne is Dusseldorf. Much like its neighbor, Dusseldorf has its own hybrid beer. Altbier is produced by nine breweries and, like Koelsch, is warm fermented and lagered. It is, however, a darker beer with more of a fruity flavor to it. It is similar to

an English ale with a cleaner, crisper finish. Alaskan Amber is an American beer brewed in the Altbier style.

Bamberg is well known for smoke beers, but has a variety of styles available there. Smoke beer has been described as “liquid bacon” and the flavor comes from smoking the malts over hardwood until it absorbs

plenty of smoky flavor. Smoke beers are an acquired taste but one that is worth learning about. Once you develop a taste for these beers, your palate will crave them. Spezial and Schlenkerla are the two most well know of the Bamberg smoked beers.

Berlin is known for its namesake wheat beer, Berliner Weisse. This

is a light, cloudy, very low (3%) ABV beer. Typically brewed will less wheat than the Hefeweizen, this beer is also deliberately soured. Traditional methods included a secondary fermentation in the bottle in less than ideal conditions, but most breweries introduce Lactobacillus in order to provide that sour, refreshing flavor. Many people think it tastes like lemonade and it is sometimes so tart that either an herbal syrup or a raspberry syrup can be added

to it to take the edge off the sourness.

Kreutzal, a small town just south of Dusseldorf is home to Krombacher Brewing. While fairly new to America, KrombacherPils is the number one selling Pilsner in Germany. It claims 42% of the market in a country renowned for its Pilsners. With a dark Pils and a nice hefeweizen in the portfolio

THE RARE BEER SPRING FESTIVAL IS FINALLY HERE!

BY “KING” JAMES SWANN

Hello again beer lovers, today I’d like to take a moment to chat about a new Beer Festival happening in the valley this week. The first annual Pitcher of Nectar Distributing Co.’s Spring Beer Festival. Taking place inside Whole Foods Market in Chandler, AZ on Saturday March 30th, from 3 to 7pm, this true beer festival will feature Twenty Five New and Rare Breweries from all around the United States and Europe.

Beers to look out for include the Upright Brewing series numbers Four through Seven, as well as Marin Brewing’s Brass knuckle Double IPA, El Toro’s Negro Oatmeal Stout, Against The Grain Brewing’s Shit Jeans, Bo & Luke, 2 Wheel Death Machine and “The Dude Will Abide” from Bad Attitude Brewing. My picks for the day include Pot Kettle Black American Black Ale from Yeastie Boys and Walk on Water Strong Ale from Mikkeller. Pretty crazy names for beers and even more unusual flavours, these brews are gonna blow your socks off!

The official list of breweries is as follows:

Marin Brewing, Rubicon Brewing, Ale Industries, Borderlands (Local), Joseph James, Against the Grain, Beer Here, Nogne O, Sudwerk, Bad Attitude, To01, Yeastie Boys, Mikkeller, Anchorage, Upright Brewing, Panil, Jolly Pumpkin, 8 Wired, X Beeriment, DrieFonteinen, JK Scrumpy Ciders, Thistly Cross Ciders, Timothy Taylor, Ass Kisser, El Toro and a few very special surprises as well. How’s that for a list of new to you breweries?

With lots of beers on tap, many in bottles and even a few Real Cask Ales, this promises to be the best and most unusual festival of the year. Tickets are $15 and include 10 samples. More samples can be purchased at any time should you feel the need for more brew.

I Can’t Wait! See You There!

Krombacher is truly an amazing beer. You can typically find these beers on tap at Brat Haus in Scottsdale.

Bavaria, and especially Munich, is definitely the beer capital of Germany. Boasting the most breweries and the largest variety of beers, this is the place many people think of when they think Germany and beer. Whether it is the rich, magnificent Dark Dunkel of Andechs Brewery, a small monastery south of Munich, or the amazing Pilsners of Munich proper, or the incredible wheat beers from Kelheim, Bavaria is the place to drink.

Kelheim is home to Schneider brewery and when you talk about wheat beer, you have to realize that the history of wheat beer is also the history of the Schneider brewing family and its famous Schneider Weisse. Georg I Schneider, as the wheat beer pioneer and creator of the Schneider Weisse Original recipe (which is still used today), is revered by all wheat beer connoisseurs.Two-hundred years ago, wheat beer could only be brewed by the Bavarian royal family in their breweries. In 1872, King Ludwig II discontinued brewing wheat beer due to a steady decline in sales.

That same year, he sold Georg I Schneider the exclusive right to brew wheat beer. Thus, the Schneider Family saved wheat beer from extinction. Today, Georg VI Schneider is running the brewery in Kelheim, which the family acquired in 1927 and has remained the Schneider Weisse brewery to this day. It is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria; wheat beer has been brewed

there without interruption since its founding in the year 1607.

Schneider makes a variety of wheat beers, but their Original Weisse is, perhaps, the best known. The outstanding Aventinus, a doppleweizenbock, is an amazingly smooth dark beer with a deceptive 8% ABV. The secret story about this beer is that it was actually created by a woman. Mathilde Schneider was the widow of Georg III Schneider and ran the brewery supervising the development of this amazing beer. For a real treat, try the Eisbock that is made from the Aventinus base. The other unique beer from this brewery is Edel Weiss. This organic hefeweizen is lighter in color than the Original and is brewed as a tribute to the days that the brewery was located in Munich and participated in the Oktoberfest. After a fire destroyed the Munich brewery, all production was moved to Kelheim and they were no longer eligible to participate in Oktoberfest. One of the interesting things about this beer is its use of Cascade hops, a traditional American hop. This hop adds a nice bitterness to the beer without overwhelming the delicate wheat profile of the beer.

This amazing beer is now available in Arizona on draft and Centurion’s Bar Maximus, 2nd Avenue and Roosevelt Street, will be the first to pour it. On April 4th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Centurion will be hosting a very special tasting to introduce this unique beer to Arizona.

There you have a very brief look at the beers of Germany. If it makes you thirsty, pick up something German and give it a try.

Top Spring/Summer

2013 Fashion TrendsWhat did the world see at fashion shows throughout the country that you’ll surely want to incorporate in your spring and summer wardrobe? Relax and breathe easy, we’ve got

you covered! Mixing all these different colors and styles together is certainly going to refresh your look from coming out of winter. With so much sun beaming throughout the valley, these looks will certainly give you some new and refreshing energy and style.

Evening Chanel predicts the spring look with strapless shorter or mid-calf evening dresses with high wedge shoes or high heels. The strapless dress can actually be a dramatic compliment to women who are more hip heavy, as it brings the eye up to the collar bone and away from the hips. Don’t let this look escape you. Secondly, flashy lashes and pale pink lipstick for evening looks. Looser looks are in for warmer weather with areas of fabric still fitted to the body. Perhaps a loose fitting dress tied with a belt at the waste and off to the side of the hip.

The Office This spring get away with a linen suit with shorts. A matching jacket and loose shorts mid-thigh still give a sleek look with a pair of flats for the office. If you have an after office event, store a pair of super high heels to switch to for an evening look. This will elongate your leg and give you the catwalk look. Shorter pants and cropped jackets with ¾ length sleeves. Color is key, light on the bottom with a pattern look for the jacket give it brightness and breeziness.

Men’s Spring Fashion Look Weekend casual works well for the man’s lifestyle. A great jacket over a dressy T- Shirt and dressy casual shorts is great for day or night. Dressy, night-time spring look or chic business casual for the art director types. This year, black or beige pants for a polished fresh look is all good and then some.

Handbags for Spring Spring time is time to lighten up on handbag colors. Be brighter and in fashion with greens and two tone bags. Leather is the theme and bold is the statement. Think contrast with the hard plastic case of the bag and the soft flowing dress. Make big statements this spring, period.

Mid Heel, High Heel, Flats and Wedges Lighten up that shoe and keep it light and comfortable in Los Angeles. Brighter color for shoes this spring is a sure bet Color in the shoe also adds a nice touch to an evening look if you’re wearing black or darker colors. Beige goes with it all and a classic beige high heel in your wardrobe is a good new buy. Spice it up with the beige high heel from Alejandro Ingelmo. Wedges work for extreme comfort. Pair then great with jeans and shorts and shorter flowy style skirts.. Charlotte Olympia has some amazing soft styles that are new and refreshing.

Jewelry Get a beachy look with fabulous necklaces by Aurélie Bidermann with shells and colors of turquoise and coral. Aurélie Bidermann also designs a more elaborate blue stone necklace that makes a great evening look. Light and airy style necklace’s by Ericson Beamon make an airy spring appearance and pair well with bohemian looks. Emerald, Ruby, Aquamarine, Garnet, Topaz and Peridot. All gemstone colors are great for spring.

NWhy You Should Train Like a Fighter,

Even If You Never Step in the Ring

Whether or not you compete in the sport of mixed martial arts, the game of life can be plenty a grueling challenge in and of itself. In other words, the time has come to work, play and TRAIN like a CHAMPION!

Take UFC commentary personality Joe Rogan for example. If you had the opportunity to watch Joe train, you would most likely ask yourself, “Why doesn’t he fight instead of just talk about fighting?” Now in his mid-forties, the 5’8”, 190-pound Ultimate Fighting Championship color man looks as strong, slim and trim as many of the sports best athletes. A four-time Massachusetts taekwondo champion while in his teens and early 20s, Rogan has trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai for more than a decade.

Aside from a wealth of new self defense talent, the endless mental, physical and overall health benefits MMA fitness training brings will quickly deliver a brand new you. Not

to mention a sculpted and carved physique you probably never dreamed of achieving. And best of all, it’s much more fun to mix it up a bit in the gym and keep your body guessing. Our guess is… you’ll discover a lean, mean fighting machine and a brighter, better you. So whether in the bedroom or the boardroom, get back to the top of your game with an MMA fitness regimen. One your mind, body and soul will welcome with open arms… legs, punches and kicks!

NIGHT OWLTH

E

by Evelyn Romans

Sergio Mendoza y La Orkesta at the Desert Botanical Garden

Congorock & Clockwork at Sound Kitchen/Wild Knight

Now that it’s officially Spring, outside dancing is more like a celebration of life rather than a mission to stay warm. Young and old alike will start to experience that yearning for movement and recall that innate desire to admire all things naturally beautiful in our desert without the consequence of the unwanted moistness notoriously known as Arizona swamp ass. Over the next few months, the temperature is near ideal giving those searching for outdoor activities, a plethora of options. Once the heat hits, people seem to ditch the fact that cacti and sand are attractive qualities belonging to our home state; therefore, party alfresco now. Music in the Garden has been a weekly event held at the Desert Botanical Garden since utopian weather graced the Sonoran earlier in the month. Like all wonderful

things, it will end with the coming of the intense sun.  This week, Cuban rhythms and American jazz will float amongst the four thousand species of desert flora as Phoenicians stir the atmosphere with sometimes, hilariously unflattering dance moves. For those blessed with Latin grooving abilities, show off what you got and head down to the garden. To accompany the entertainment, a feast of grilled tri-tip smothered in chimichurri, complimented by black beans and tortillas will be available for purchase. A cash bar will also be set up to provide you with the liquid comforts often needed to loosen up stiff joints and nerves. Bring your date and desert-dancing shoes for a classy evening under the stars. Friday, March 29th. Doors open at 5:30. Event: 7 pm – 9 pm. 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix. www.dbg.org. $21-$27. Ages 21+

Laser beams shoot from the surrounding speakers’ pores, cutting through gyrating bodies, leaving neon colored residue streaked across fist pumping arms. Lights flash rhythmically and temporarily give sight to a neighboring dancer whose eyes are eagerly staring at the concentrating disc jockey, positioned on the platform ahead. That instance of illumination reveals more than just pleading eyes looking forward—eyes begging the DJ to play more ecstasy-filled beats—it also provides a spectacle of pure jollification, the kind that can only be had in a night club packed with young souls partying like it’s their last night of juvenile freedom. Whether you love Scottsdale, hate Scottsdale, or have mixed feelings about its lively nightlife scene, one cannot deny the fact that its energy

is able to draw internationally recognized DJs to its booths. Wild Knight is one of Scottsdale’s most spirited clubs hosting guest DJs almost every evening. This Friday, see Italia-bred, Congorock. Along with being part of underground electronic music royalty in just two years, Congorock has earned the respect of EDM kings like; Afrojack, Tiesto, Benny Benassi, Crookers, and has even shared the platform with David Guetta. Also playing Friday night is NYC-based, Clockwork, who was the youngest DJ ever to be signed on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records. Impressive. Trust the experts and let yourself have a wild night every once in a while. YOLO… Friday, March 29th. 9 pm – 2am. 4405 N Saddlebag Trail, Scottsdale. http://relentlessbeats.com. $10. Ages 21+

I’m seeing both sides, since I’m playing an Army wife but also someone who has been in the service herself. All the producers are amazing at accessing all the research that we as actors want and need.

NALBUM REVIEWSBY BRIAN PALMER

Nashville singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose’s new album, The Stand-In, is chock full of country, folk, and pop numbers that stick largely to the ups and downs of relationships. The brokenhearted country pop of “No One to Call” gives you an idea of how this record will play out, though on numbers like “I Was Cruel” she plays the other side of the coin in lamenting her ability to be the one breaking hearts. Rose gives solid vocal performances throughout, reminding you of a slightly throatier Zooey Deschanel—particularly on the upbeat pop track, “Menagerie”—and she makes the album’s largely solemn, difficult relationship-centered material relatively engaging if this is your thing. Simple and authentic, though lacking in the variety department, The Stand-In is a decent album.

Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer Offer up Stirring Child Ballads, Caitlin Rose Makes a

Decent Stand-InAnais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer’s Child Ballads is a stirring collection of traditional English and Scottish ballads you’ll want to listen to over and over again. Whether singing about a man who begs his queen to lift her curse on his barren wife (“Willie’s Lady”) or waxing philosophical about life’s mysteries (“Riddles Wisely Expounded”), Mitchell and Hamer infuse these centuries-old tunes with life and vitality. Mitchell’s spritely

vocals match well with Hamer’s richer, thicker voice and it is astounding how often their impassioned performances will make you think these tales have come from their own life experiences. This record transports you to another time and place, where knights fought for glory, bards told rousing tales, and kings raised and routed kingdoms. This duo has created a unique, beautiful record that is not to be missed.

Sunday, April 7th at Celebrity Theatre

2013 Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famers Heart is back with new sounds, a new book and a ‘Fanatic’ tour that makes a stop at Celebrity Theatre at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 7th. Introducing Fanatic, Heart’s 12th album of original material, and their first ever autobiography called Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll. Fanatic, like its predecessor, 2010’s Red Velvet Car, captures vintage ‘70s Heart with its blend of hard rock and soulful, folk-inspired tracks, while it also sounds contemporary.

Their new memoir Kicking and Dreaming tells the story of Heart’s early days as being one of the first bands whose focal points were two female musicians in the-then male dominated world of rock. Along with the music, their story also touches on the personal, such as the sisters’ lives

(Ann and Nancy Wilson) growing up as part of a military family; their romantic relationships and breakups; and Ann’s battle with her weight. Ann and Nancy are arguably two of the most influential women in rock and roll. Heart struck it big in the ‘70s with hit albums like Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen and Magazine, not to mention a string of unforgettable singles that are still considered classic rock mainstays - “Crazy On You,” “Barracuda” and “Magic Man” just to name a few. With the band now in its fourth decade and having sold 35 million albums worldwide, it’s obvious Heart is as viable as ever. Congratulations to 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Heart! The awards ceremony will

be held at the Nokia Live in Los Angeles on April 18th, and aired on HBO on May 18th.. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www.celebritytheatre.

com. To charge by phone, call 602-267-1600 ext. 1. All tickets are subject to a surcharge. Celebrity Theatre is conveniently located just 4 blocks south of the Loop 202 freeway, at 440 N. 32nd St., in Phoenix.
