When the computer starts, it starts the operatingsystem that takes the control of the machine. AnOperating System is a set of programs that help in

controlling and managing the Hardware and theSoftware resources of a computer system

A good operating system should have the following features;1. Help in the loading of programs and data from external

sources into the internal memory before they are executed.

2. Help programs to perform input/output operations, suchas;

± Print or display the result of a program on the printer orthe screen.

± Store the output data or programs written on thecomputer in storage device.

±

Communicate the message from the system to the userthrough the VDU. ± Accept input from the user through the keyboard or

mouse

D ISK OPERATING SYSTEM

On August 12, 1981, IBM introduced its new revolution in abox, the "Personal Computer" complete with a brand newoperating system from Microsoft and a 16-bit computeroperating system called MS-DOS 1.0 .

The "Microsoft Disk Operating System" or MS-DOS was basedon QDOS, the "Quick and Dirty Operating System" written byTim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products, for their

prototype Intel 8086 based computer.

WH AT D OS IS ALL ABOUT

In the early days of computers, there were no diskdrives; delay lines, punched cards, paper tape, magnetictape, magnetic drums, were used instead. And in the earlydays of microcomputers, paper tape or audio cassette tape ornothing were used instead. In the latter case, program anddata entry was done at front panel switches directly intomemory or through a computer terminal / keyboard, sometimes controlled by a read-only

memory (ROM) BASIC interpreter; when power was turned off after running the program, the information so enteredvanished

Both hard disks and floppy disk drives require software tomanage rapid access to block storage of sequential and otherdata. When microcomputers rarely had expensive disk drives

of any kind, the need to have software to manage suchdevices (the disks) carried much status. To have one or theother was a mark of distinction and prestige, and so washaving the Disk sort of an Operating System .

D EFINITION OF D OS

As the name suggests, the operating System is used foroperating the system or the computer. It is a set of computerprograms and also known as DOS (Disk Operating System). The main functions of DOS are to manage disk files, allocatesystem resources according to the requirement. DOS providesfeatures essential to control hardware devices such asKeyboard, Screen, Disk Devices, Printers, Modems andprograms.

FEATURES OF D OS

As with any other operating system, its function is to overseethe operation of the system by providing support forexecuting programs, controlling I/O devices, handling errors, and providing the user interface.

MS-DOS is a disk-based, single-user, single-task operatingsystem. These qualities make it one of the easiest diskoperating systems to understand

The main portions of MS-DOS are the IO.SY S, MSDOS.SY S, andCOMMAND.COM files

IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS are special, hidden system files

The IO.SYS file moves the system s basic I/O functions intomemory and then implements the MS-DOS default controlprograms, referred to as device drivers, for various hardwarecomponents.

These include the following :

The boot disk drive

The console display and keyboard

The system s time-of-day clock

The parallel and serial communications

The MSDOS.SYS file provides default support features forsoftware applications.

These features include the following :

Memory management

Character input and output

Real-time clock access

File and record management

Execution of other programs

The COMMAND.COM command interpreter acceptscommands issued through the keyboard, or other inputdevice, and carries them out according to the commandsdefinition
