Poverty is pervasive. It affects every aspect of the lives of the people subjected to it. Therefore, it is of

utmost concern, yet it could be alleviated if appropriate measures were set in motion to eradicate illiteracy

among other ills. Although it is truth that heath, food and shelter are the priorities it is not less important

that education is key to avoid poverty for it is common knowledge that the less educated people are, the

less possibilities to get dignified jobs people have.

To begin with, I would like to raise awareness on the fact that most of the times, illiteracy must be seen in

the big picture for generally, it is a stigma inherited by generations subjected to the same fate. Therefore,

it is no wonder that poverty is so rooted in society for it has been neglected by successive governments,

being scarcely mentioned in their political agendas.

Yet, from a social point of view, people who barely can read or count feel not only inferior, but

resentment for being allegedly neglected and thus bear mixed feelings that could even lead to social

disorder resulting basically from social dislocation. Such huge gap between social classes can not bring us

any good. On the contrary, people at large tend to disregard poverty even when its by- products are

criminal actions, vandalism, drug addictions among others.

Thus, education is key to address poverty affecting the most fragile strata of society. The lower income

groups, mostly those living beyond poverty line have the natural right to access to free education. And the

government has to provide them with it, being education even compulsory so as to eradicate poverty and

marginality in the long term.

Form a moral stand point, I find poverty and illiteracy unacceptable in the second millennium. Mostly,

considering that we are entering a digital era and so there will be thousand if not millions of people left

aside on account of the mentioned handicaps. So as a society, we have to see literacy to be addressed

mostly for those starting their lives who can be saved from this sad destiny, those who might become in

the future the very foundations of our society.

To put it in a nutshell, I strongly believe that poverty and education are closely connected and if we all

work to eradicate it we will contribute to a better world, more dignified for the generations to come.
