The fermentation process is the third method for glycerin (propanetriol) production next to the saponification process (oil splitting) and the chemical synthesis process. The development of synthetic detergents has caused a standstill of the glycerin output using the saponification process. Glycerin production utilising the biotechnology has therefore emerged. Nevertheless, the fermentation process cannot replace the other two methods and output has to be determined by market demand and the price.
