ARMY COMMUNITY SERVICE

Each year, the most common resolutions people make on January 1st are to eat healthier and get in better shape. However, when it comes to setting New Year’s resolutions, saving money and reducing debt are also worthy contenders. How you spend and save is as important as what you eat and how much you exercise. This year, get serious about the amount of debt you carry, where you spend your money and how to save your money.

Use these tips to jump-start your fi nancial health in the New Year:

Make good fi nancial decision-making your resolution

Track your habits.Take at least one week and track every penny you spend. This will give you an idea of where you may be able to cut back and how to prioritize your spending goals.

Create a spending plan for the entire calendar year.Estimate what you bring in and what you spend throughout the year to get a realistic picture of a sensible monthly budget.

Consider where you can cut back.Maybe you can get a better interest rate on your mortgage or car loan, or perhaps you have some subscription services you could do without.

Tackle your debt.If you have extra debt, a new year is the perfect time to make a plan to pay it down. Find out where you’re losing the most money in interest, and tackle your debts one by one.

Set savings goals.Do you have a vacation destination you’ve always wanted to visit? Are you ready to become a homeowner? Plan to set aside a certain amount of money each month to reach your goal.

Build an emergency fund.If you don’t have one already, make an emergency fund one of your goals this year. An emergency fund means surprise expenses, like car repairs or medical bills, won’t ruin your household budget.

Meet with a fi nancial counselor. Make an appointment to meet with a fi nancial counselor through Army Community Service (ACS) at 655-4ACS.

Check in throughout the year. Don’t let your fi nancial planning goals lose momentum. Make it a point to check in every few months to make sure you reach your budgeting/savings goals.
