A lot has changed for a lot of people and companies during 2009, and due to the economy, not all of the change has been pleasant.     As another year draws to a close, its time once again for our annual message of thanks and good wishes to the communities that we at the Press newspaper group have been proud and privileged to serve for 10 years now. A lot has changed for a lot of people and companies during 2009, and due to the economy, not all of the change has been pleasant. Nevertheless, we hope your dif culties this year have been offset just a bit by the stories of success, achievement and caring weve been able to share in these pages and on our Web site, thepress.net.     Directors to return overpaid stipends

    Two CSD board members and one former director have been asked by town legal coun-cil to return to the district a to-tal of more than $8,000 they received for attending meetings that did not qualify for stipend payments.

    According to Town At-torney John Stovall, since 2006, CSD President Ray Tetreault was overpaid $1,900, Director David

    Piepho $6,563.21, and former Director Patty Knight $502.48. The stipends were paid following inclusion on expense reports fi led quarterly by the directors.

    Stovall said Piepho has al-

    ready repaid the amount in full, and Tetreault is reimbursing the amount by refusing a stipend check owed to him and paying the difference with a personal check. Stovall has asked the board for

    the authority to request repay-ment from Knight.

    Stovall addressed the stipend issue during the regular CSD meeting on Dec. 16.     Discovery Bay residents love a parade, and last weekend enthusiasts showed their seasonal spirit at the Holiday on the Lake event on Willow Lake. Participants lit up the night sky with their sparkling Santas, magical menorahs and turbo trains.

    Hosted by Michelle Carlson of Keller Williams and Janet Dean with Bank of America Home Loans, and bolstered by prizes donated by the Discovery Bay Steakhouse and the Boardwalk Grill, the fi fth annual celebration was a cozy

    community event.This is a fun event for the residents

    who live along Willow Lake, said Carlson. Its a no-power-boat, pontoons-only event and its lots of fun. We had a great turnout and we just want to thank everyone that came out. Its a great part of our Christmas.

    Wayne and Lynda Rivers entry was awarded the fi rst-place prize; Art and Nancy Solomon took second place; and the Claytons came in third.

    Antioch girl takes care of angelsMegan Vallee is only 10-years old,

    but for many local children this holiday season, shes the answer to their prayers.

    Recently while dining with her family at a local restaurant, Megan noticed a Salvation Army Angel Giving Tree on display. When the Antioch fi fth-grader began reading a few of the tags asking for gifts and essentials for needy families for Christmas, she asked her parents if they could help. The answer, of course, was yes, so in her enthusiasm Megan took all of the remaining tickets approximately 15 off the tree and popped them into her pocket.

    Megan was very moved by the fact that all of these children were just asking for simple basic needs such as jackets and clothing and some very simple toys, said Reggie Vallee, Megans dad. My daughter has competed in beauty pageants for the past several years, and she decided to use her winnings from the pageants for the gifts.

    Megan and her mom went out, purchased the gifts and delivered them to the Salvation Army. But Megan wasnt done. Another family dinner in Brentwood yielded the same results: Megan spied another Salvation Army tree and pulled off the remaining fi ve tickets.

    Megans act of kindness has not only been a boon to the Salvation Army this season; it has given much to the Vallee

    family as well. After our visit (to deliver the packages to the Salvation Army) we drove away with a whole new perspective on charity and the great impact it makes

    on our community and the amount of assistance thats needed to support what they do, said Reggie. The Salvation Army is a wonderful organization.

    Recognizing students for their hard work and individual efforts is the favorite part of Liberty High School Principal Tim Hallorans job. At a re-cent LUHSD board meeting, Halloran praised Liberty High senior Elizabeth Day for her dedication in the classroom, on the yearbook staff, and in Libertys swimming pool.

    Elizabeth has maintained a 3.6 grade point average while attending all advanced placement and college prep courses. She has received many special

    honors on campus, including Principals Honor Roll, Academic Letter, Athletic Letter, and All-League Second Team in water polo. She was captain of the water polo team for two years, and a member of the varsity swim team for four.

    Elizabeth has also devoted pre-cious time during her summer break and school year as editor-in-chief of Libertys yearbook. She plans to attend a four-year college after graduation and become a graphic designer.

    Teacher deaths mournedThe Oakley school district is grieving

    over the deaths of two teachers last week.On Tuesday, friends and family

    celebrated the life of special-education teacher Ivania Galindo, 45, at a memorial service held at Delta Vista Middle School. The Oakley resident died Dec. 18 at Kaiser Permanente in Antioch. The offi cial cause of death is as yet undetermined, pending the results of an autopsy performed earlier

    Galindo taught special education at Delta Vista and was, said Delta Vista Principal Greg Hetrick, a popular and compassionate teacher: She was just a great lady. She was someone who always found the positives, was always smiling and was as much of a mother to her students as a teacher. She was always looking out for her students best interests, always advocating for them and challenging them as well. This is a

    huge loss for all of us.Galindo had been involved in an auto

    accident on Dec. 8 when her car collided with a Contra Costa County fi re truck on the corner of Main Street and Cypress Road in Oakley, but it is as yet unknown whether her death is connected to the accident.

    What we do know, said Oakley Police Chief Chris Thorsen, is that we took a report that day (of the accident) and that Mrs. Galindo was transported to the hospital with a complaint of pain. Its unclear at this point if her death is the result of the traffi c collision; were awaiting the results of the autopsy. Its all very sad and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

    Vintage Parkway Elementary teacher Lucy Moyer, 38, passed away on Dec. 14 following a battle with breast cancer. The Oakley resident was an active participant in the community and volunteered in her childrens activities, including the Aquaknights swim team and the Contra Costa Childrens Choir.

    Its been a tough week for Oakley educators, said Hetrick. Our thoughts are with all the families.

    Galindo and Moyer bring the number of Oakley educators who died last week to three. Freedom High School teacher Charles Edgle Smith, 56, died after his motorcycle collided with a street sweeper on Dec. 17. See the story on page 9A.

    As the year 2009 comes to a close, we thought we would take a moment to reflect on the changes Brentwood Veterinary Hospital has seen this year. Dr. Duane Schnittker, founder of Brentwood Vet Hospital, retired after 30 years of service. He will be greatly missed at the hospital, as he was well loved by his employees and clients alike. Before he retired, Dr. Schnittker took on a major project to renovate our hospital. Brentwood Vet was originally built to function with a much smaller staff. We added two new exam rooms, two new wards for hospitalized pets, and most importantly increased our work area in our treatment area. We hope these changes have allowed us to be more efficient and productive.

    On the technology side, we brought on digital x-ray which has improved our x-ray quality quite substantially. We also purchased a new x-ray machine specifically for dental images and a powerful new ultrasound machine that has helped to improve our diagnostics of internal structures. Bringing on digital x-ray is one of many steps weve made toward being a green practice. We were able to eliminate all the chemicals needed to develop standard x-ray film, we have streamlined our computer system to reduce paper consumption, and we are in the process of improving our efficiency with new procedures and practices throughout the hospital.

    These changes have also helped us to achieve accreditation with AAHA, the American Animal Hospital Association. This is a prestigious accreditation and

    we are very proud to have been given this honor. All AAHA-accredited practices voluntarily meet or exceed the associations standards for facilities, equipment and quality procedures. AAHA-accredited practices are truly distinctive in providing the highest quality care for pets. AAHA standards are recognized around the world as the benchmark for quality care in veterinary medicine. The Standards of Accreditation are written specifically for vet-erinary health care staff and AAHA members only.

    We are definitely one big (and growing!) family here at Brentwood Veterinary Hospital. As always, we encourage our staff to grow and develop both person-ally and professionally. We are very proud of Liz, who has been with us for ten years, as she received her Registered Veterinary Technician license this year. This brings our on-staff licensed RVTs to four. Katie, another RVT, just had a baby girl in November. Dr. Sims and Amber are both pregnant and expecting just after the New Year.

    We are very proud of our staff and our hospital, and we sincerely hope that the changes we have made have helped to improve our service to you and your four-legged friends. We will continue to strive to provide the best medicine and customer service we can and are always open to suggestions and comments about how we are doing. We are looking forward to a happy and healthy 2010 and wish you and yours all the best in the New Year!

    Brentwood Veterinary HospitalFreedom teacher killed

    in motorcycle accident

    A popular Freedom High School teacher was killed last week when his mo-torcycle struck a city street sweeper.

    According to Oakley Police Chief Chris Thorsen, Antioch resident Charles Edgle Smith, 56, was riding his motor-cycle on Dec. 17 at approximately 8 a.m. when he hit the side of the street sweep-er as it was making a U-turn on Neroly Road and Frandoras Circle. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

    We still have a lot of investigation to do right now, but it appears that the truck

    was making a U-turn and the mo-t o rc yc l i s t ran into the side, said T h o r s e n . We have to look at all the facts and cir-cumstances

    in the case and probably do some recon-struction in terms of the speed of the ve-hicles.

    From all accounts he was a great guy, and this is very sad. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

    Smith had taught health, drivers ed-ucation and decision-making at Freedom for more than 10 years, and before that at Liberty High School for nearly a decade. He was a strong supporter of school ath-letics, served as head freshman football coach at Freedom in the early 2000s and was a starter for the track team. He served

    as P.A. announcer for the boys and girls basketball games, and was the announcer this year for the Freedom football team.

    My dad affected a wide array of people from very different backgrounds, said Smiths son Nate, head football coach at Liberty High School. He could be friends with anyone and I guess thats one of the best measures of who he was. He was someone who truly placed family, friends and people above anything else. He always took care of everyone.

    This has been a tremendous blow to Freedoms students, teachers and staff, said Freedom Principal Erik Faulkner. If anyone exemplifi ed a passion for Freedom, it was Ed. He will be sorely missed.

    He loved what he did, added Nate. He wasnt one of these teachers who went home at 3 oclock every day. He was at ev-ery boys and girls basketball and football game and every track meet. Thats what he loved.

    Smith is survived by children Trevor, Colby and Nate, and granddaughters Skylar, Ainsley and Reilly.

    A public memorial is planned for Jan. 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Freedom High School gymnasium.

    Smith was one of three Oakley edu-cators to die last week. Delta Vista Mid-dle Schools Ivania Galindo, 45, died last Friday. She had been involved in a colli-sion with a fi re engine earlier this month, although it was not known at press time if injuries suffered in the accident con-tributed to her death. Lucy Moyer, 38, a teacher at Vintage Parkway Elementary, succumbed to cancer on Dec. 14. Their story is on page 8A.

    Homework club teaches more than academics

    Last fall when Melanie Jones broached the idea of creating a homework club/mentor program, teaming Deer Valley High School teens with her own elementary school stu-dents, the Diablo Vista principal had no idea the program would be such a triumph.

    This has turned out to be an amazing program, a great success, said Jones. This has been such a positive experience for everyone.

    The partnership between the two An-tioch schools came about as the result of school district budget cuts. A few years ago, Jones had begun a homework club on campus to assist her fi rst- through fi fth-graders with some additional academic help, but when the funds to pay for the extra hours dried up, so did the program. This year, however, after see-ing a marked drop in student grades as a result of the demise of the tutoring program, Jones was determined to fi nd an alternative. That al-ternative turned out to be at Deer Valley.

    I developed the program with Deer Val-ley teacher Connie Hunt (who teaches child development) and Tom Bergantino, a parent volunteer, and together we trained all of the high school students on how to help the el-ementary students with their homework, said Jones. We matched a high school student with an elementary student as a kind of buddy team and they worked together for two months.

    Twice a week, the approximately 40 ele-

    mentary kids met on the Diablo Vista campus with the 20 to 25 Deer Valley students. The partnership was a win-win for everyone, said Bergantino, because the high school students received credit in their child development courses for their participation in the program, and the elementary kids garnered the benefi t

    of individual instruction.It all went so much better than I could

    have imagined, said Bergantino, who has two children at Diablo Vista (though not in the homework club). It took us a couple of ses-sions to fi nd out the items we needed, like scis-sors, glue, markers and that kind of thing. But

    after that, it all just came together.The pilot program was popular and ben-

    efi cial to both the high school students, who got some hands-on training with young chil-dren, and for the elementary students in need of additional tutoring. Many of the grade-school kids come from families with non-English speaking parents who are unable to assist their children with their homework, and for them, the homework club was especially helpful.

    As far as the elementary kids go, I was hearing from their teachers how much they (the students) were enjoying the homework club, said Bergantino. And I had several teachers come to me and say that they had seen a difference in their students work and their overall participation in class.

    But the real benefi ts, he added, were more far-reaching: I think initially the high school kids were excited, but a little nervous and tentative. But over time, they began tak-ing their responsibilities very seriously and they had these wonderful attitudes. And the (elementary) kids really enjoyed having some-one pay attention to them and they all enjoyed coming (to the homework club).

    I had hoped it would be successful and it was. Were planning to do this again next term, although the same kids are not available, but were going to meet in January and talk about how to get more resources on board to keep this going. Its a very valuable program.

    What do you say? It has been over six weeks since the NASCAR races have run their course at the Fairgrounds in Antioch. The dust has cleared on Saturday evenings. The only thing thats not clear is when their parking lot will get a fresh or shall I say its fi rst-ever? paving job.

    Come on; its 2009! About 2 years ago the grounds were paved in an area on the west side of the parking lot for the people and handicapped parking. That is a step in the right direction; yet, what about completing the job?

    The lot on Saturday nights now sits quiet; without trash fl ying toward the neighborhood east of L Street and into the McFarlan tract housing area. Three years ago an updated cyclone fence was erected; yet it was placed about 1 inches above the ground. Was that so the trash from the Flea Market on Saturdays until 4 p.m. and then trash from the race fans, as well as the bottle tossing onto L Street over the fence can continue?

    Why do the Fairgrounds waste their time

    putting down white stripes for parking? They should fi rst and foremost put a good paving job down and then place the white parking stripes. It is realized that the monies for this project may not be available, yet recycled pave-ment through other county paving projects could take care of that.

    I was born in Antioch and have witnessed this 1950s attitude regarding these changes. It hasnt been mentioned that a truck-driving school rents or leases part of the east Fair-grounds parking lot. Why not put some of that revenue toward putting down some blacktop? It would greatly alleviate the dust and gravel problem. That gravel can work its way all the way across L Street.

    It is also realized that many of the fairground hierarchy do not spend any time (to speak of) in Antioch on the weekends. I have also heard that many do not even live in Antioch, so therefore their weekends are spent away from the fairgrounds dust and mess. I failed to mention that the truck-driving school, which has roots in Antioch, runs its driving school using big-rig trucks with trailers and sometimes just the cab. These trucks can really stir up the dust due to the area being oiled just one time a year. That would be just one time a year in late May prior to the CCC Fair getting going.

    The truck-driving school takes place six days a week with the only day not used by them is Saturdays, which is the day of the Flea Market. These people must be paying some-thing to use these lots.

    We just saw the completion of the Fourth to 10th Street additions of L Street and you better believe down the road, the 10th to 18th Street on L Street will be widened also. Come on, city leaders that make these decisions lets get paving!

    I must add that this is not about the race car drivers and their sponsors from many loca-tions in California; they seem to be outstanding people that are in this for the sport of driving

    the oval track.Some say that if you dont like the goings

    on, then move out. Well, what about the next family that moves in to the neighborhood? Progress would be better, dont you think? Enjoy the evenings of empty fairgrounds in the east parking lot. Maybe one day we will wake up to the pleasant sound of a work crew; maybe even a stimulus work crew paving their hearts out. Oh happy days! Pave, pave, pave!

    Christmas spirit alive on Bethel Island

    Editor:We understand that times are tough, not

    just for our own family (which has three mem-bers out of work) but for many other families in our local area, as well as across the nation. Even so, we refused to let our state, or even our nations economic situation take away from the spirit of Christmas. Times are hard everywhere, yet our family still wanted to do something for our community to help spread the Christmas cheer.

    What did we do? We wanted to offer a chance to experience a little Christmas cheer right from Bethel Island. Our Christmas scene may be small by the measure of some, but to us its a very big deal. My brother has been work-ing very hard all week putting up Christmas decorations in the hope of sharing some Christ-mas spirit with the families in our community.

    We invite everyone to come and share some Christmas cheer with our family. Remem-ber to wear a warm coat, bring a fl ashlight, and maybe a thermos of hot cocoa, too. And yes, even the Antioch, Brentwood, Discovery Bay and Oakley Press are welcome and we do hope you come and take pictures and help us spread the word: The Christmas Spirit Is Alive

    Demand true health care insurance reform

    Editor:With sadness I am writing to express

    my opposition to the current health care legislation. As a nation, we desperately need health care insurance reform. Yet the current proposed reform is simply a giveaway to the health care insurance and pharmaceutical industries, while limiting the coverage of some of the basics of health care including reproduc-tive health care services and preventive health services.

    In addition, the legislation as currently proposed punishes hard-working individuals by mandating that they buy inadequate health insurance, giving their limited funds to an already subsidized health insurance industry or pay a fi ne.

    The true silent majority of the American people must demand true health care insur-ance reform from their individual Congress members. We must end our silence during this debate, and threaten to vote out their Congress members who refuse to be held accountable to their true constituents, the regular healthy American who wants to be able to prevent illness by doing what is appropriate in consulta-tion with their local doctor and be protected if, God forbid, illness hits unexpectedly.
